The only thing I could say I would do differently would be as you suggested to solder the alligator clips, and to use heat shrink tubing over the whole thing, and not shrinking right over the clip to create a boot, and forego the plexiglass piece
I saw this video last fall and decided to make one. I made it for less then 10 dollars, everything I got was from Ace Hardware. It worked quite well. I used it in the house while talking simplex and was getting good reports about 30 miles away with a 6 watt HT. This was my first homebrew antenna and was impressed with what it did.
Made one of your antenna this afternoon using a old TV beam and some welding rods, all fed with rg58.I did'nt use the croc clips but soldered the coax . All went together like a dream , VSWR 1.5.1 at 145.500 so im very pleased. I could work repeaterswith my VX150 that I could only hear with my J Pole. 73s G7GRB
Te diameter of the wire will not affect the center frequency nor will it affect the SWR the thing that affects these the most is the length on the driven elements and the spacing of the elements.
can I use RG-58 coax because I have hundreds of feet of it and that is the only coax I use also can I use something else then an arrow shaft maybe wood.
You might be able to get away with it but it may change the frequency the antenna is centered to as well as the SWR. I'm not sure the extent of the effect. If at all possible, I would use the same size diameter of music wire.
It can be found at most hardware stores and hobby shops. I found that it's almost half the cost when purchased at a hardware store. I've seen them at my local ACE Hardware.
Are you looking for a file containing the plans? If you are looking for dimensions, if you go to 3:35 of the video, you can see all of the dimensions and lengths for the elements and holes.
When the plans I originally used called for using music wire, I imediately went to a music store to purchase it. Do not do this! Though its called music wire, music stores do not have it (at least not in straight lengths). A better name for it would be "hobby wire". You can find it at hobby stores or hardware stores. I found it to be cheapest at the local ACE hardware. Make sure you purchase straight pieces instead of ones curled on a spool.
The cable's only purpose is a feedline so a change in length should't have any effect on the antenna purformance. However, if you make the RG-8x considerably longer you'll start observing losses in the cable and may want to upgrade to a larger coax.
You made an excellent video here. The instructions are exhaustive and concise. Now I'm wondering if I could make a light duty antenna for say, 6M! It might require several fishing rods, but it gets me thinking... Maybe even a 20M antenna using loading coils.

Thanks for the instructions mr - might have to build one of these myself - be fun to experiment with "pub" portable :)

Pretty cool. What would you say your total cost was? I don't have music wire or arrow shaft laying around.

Pretty thin conductors. What kind of usable bandwidth are you getting, say at less than 2:1 SWR?
Thanks!

@FishTheMargins For more detailed information on the SWR, check out KD5IVP's website. A link can be found in the description of the video.

@KJ4UNR yes rg-58 is fine for short runs especially with low watts

You're feeding a balanced antenna with an unbalanced feed?

great tutorial. i'm planning to start doing it. but need to find out what do you mean by music wire? is that actually a piano string?
