cuba's enrique figeuroa took second in 10.2, on this shitting cinder track look at by how much hayes beat him by. deion sanders best 100m was 10.24 ON MODERN SURFACE TRACK. if hayes in his prime raced deion in his prime dieon would have got completely S-M-O-K-E-D !!!!
Bob Hayes was a superman. It's risky to try and compare athletes from different eras but there was no doubt that The Bullet was one of the greatest of all time.
The first three USA runners of the 4x100m were slowed by injuries and mediocre to poor passing, but Hayes was such a beast ''just give it to me close'' ;-)
Yeah, the first three legs by the U.S. were decidedly average, and the French did very well, then Hayes just explodes. His physique dwarfs the rest of the field. His speed at the 60-70 metres mark is stunning. Can only imagine what he would've run on all weather tracks.
Hayes was the fastest sprinter of the modern era. Faster than anyone since, including Michael Johnson. I'm talking instantious top speed, not records. By the way, I admire Johnson very much. But Hayes charge was undeniable.
Hayes' top speed was undeniable but now there is one by the name of Tyson Gay that has the fastest top speed EVER at an unheard of 28 mph and that was measured with a head wind. He WIll win the next olypics no questions asked.
Trust me, winning back to back Marathons in the Olympics is something special, no wonder Abebe Bikila was one of the greatest marathon runners of Olympic History, R.I.P.

The win was made easier by the fact there were no other teams on the track. Or did the guy commenting just forget about them?
He does Hayes' effort a disservice by not mentioning the 15 metre gap he made up on the French - who ran a fantastic race to be well ahead at 300m.
