No ATBs/MTBs, no lycra, no cycling shoes, no fancy energy foods and drinks; just tourers and ordinary bikes and clothes with tea lemonade and beer to keep you going. If only life could be this simple again.

The girl in the orange sweater has some erotic potential, but she'll never realize it unless she gets the hell out of the UK. having lived in the Rugby area for many years it was great to see how it used to look pre 1970(when i was born) recognised most places including the squirel pub(a fav haunt of mine for many years)
What has happened to Great Britain? Looks like it was a civilized cyclists' society. Seems like the country has devolved with all the "Road Tax" mumbo. So sad. At least in the U.S., the roads are wide enough to avoid psycho drivers if one is careful; and the Netherlands has a superb network of cycle paths for the entire country!
Its gone to bollox because of all the fcking immigrant's and twats that have been let in over the last 20 odd years... This video is so far away from what Great Britain is like now as I am from the MOON.....
my dad worked at stamford hall about 500 yards from the church, in the motorcycle museum, and my sister gave tours of the hall. this would be in the 60s
I moved to the Rugby area in 1980, and so never saw the West Coast main line without the wires up. Also nice to see how the surrounding countryside looked all those years ago.
Thanks for the look at Rugby as I remember it. Eventhough it was filmed 5 years before I my parents even got to Rugby. I recognize Railway Terrace, Murray Road, Church Street and the Leicester Road under the 11 arches bridge.
Every week there are CTC group rides taking place up and down the country. It is harder to take bikes on trains these days but there are plenty of club rides taking place pretty much everywhere.

A cafe car serving real food...
You'd be lucky to get a couple of expensive pre-packaged plastic sandwiches and a cup of pig-swill coffee these days. My how we've gone backwards.

aah the good old days. When did cyclists stop wearing shirt and ties? Bring back the tweed shorts and leather handlebar grips!

Too many captions at the beginning. Like painting too many road markings, it soon gets irritating.

@ricadus Sure, I see your point, but if that's the worse thing that happens to you today, then you have a much better life than you realise!

It's not just cars that were scarce in these days - no obese people or grumphy rail staff.
Last time I took my bike on a train I got a bad look for the guard, and told to keep 'the bloody bike out of the corridor'.
Charming !

I'll bring my steel 3-speed! Although, a 4-speed hub like the FW or FG would be quite useful too!

I've seen this timeless piece of railway/cycling film before, but not this colourised version. Good find on that one carltonreid!

Wow, hardly any cars, brilliant. Also, in those days it was sunny and warm in summer and rain
y and cold in winter, unlike the weather today which the people of the world has caused.

we DEFINITELY can do this today

not when main line trains only carry two bikes and require you to pre book
then kick you off at the next station anyway!

OF course we could do this today!!!

i just love the pipe smoking guy - too bad we could not do this today, too many cars even in the country side....
