@jowenlondon Mouse, ketboard and monitor all in one neat package. My desk top has a 22 inch monitor, which is really great, but I still find myself using the laptop more often.
Desktops are definatly the best option duh!! People who game a lot need the better processors and better videocards in desktops. For a moviemaker a desktop is a must! Cant believe your even asking this!
@Zach06R What about the quad core I5 or I7. How about 6 or 8 megs of RA|M. What about a 750 Gig Hard Drive. All generally available in todays laptops. All I am saying is my laptop runs everything just fine. Better than my older desk top.
@FredSpencerpu of course it does ur comparing a new laptop to a old desktop 750GB is peanuts for hard drive space i have 8TB of space i game and edit videos in full HR in minutes using after effects my original videos but i also run dual quadro 5000 2.5GB so over all desktop can be a powerhouse that no laptop could ever compete with imo
@uvasteve Speaking of desk top computers, have you noticed they are getting more compact. Some incorporate the monitor into the box and stand on your desk. Something like a laptop. I totally here your argument in favour of desk top computers. I do like my laptop right now for it's convenience. I am not sure what to think abour tablets. (Toy?)
@FredSpencerpu yes fred its all about what works for you and tablets pretty cool as well and i guess it could be considered a toy and i may be just thrown off on this topic slightly because i do not buy prebuilt rigs i like to build my own and i have a decent size tower but i also need the space for the multiple hard drives
i think its awesome you are into what you are doing my dad couldn't use a computer if his life depended on it LOL
My laptop renders 3D animation faster than my desk top. Quite a bit faster. It does the job in a very acceptable manner. A new desk top computer would probably be faster, but would it really matter.
@FredSpencerpu I'm not sure if it would really 'matter', but the main thing with desktops vs laptops is that a desktop, currently, is always either going to be cheaper or run faster for the same amount of money. If portability and/or space isn't a concern, then a desktop is a no-brainer.
@FredSpencerpu Sorry, I didn't intend it to be. Just saying there is some very awesome people in the world making some very amazing images and animations that are very advanced in lighting and simulation.
With all of the space available on said laptops and with usb ports, do you even want to fill up that room on your desk with papers? Keep things paperless and clutter-free!
@FredSpencerpu I agree with Cenobite3 -- with the advent of larger external hard drives, and how affordable they are now, laptops are really the way to go, in terms of physical space-saving, and overall orderliness. I can't imagine how hot that room gets with all four of your computers on all day at once!
Good points made here Fred. Louise is in need of a new computer as her's is old old old and she is doing some online schooling. So I'm thinking about this very question as Christmas comes quickly upon us. I am waiting till boxing week to make the big decision and am leaning towards a laptop. What do you think?
@gailaroonie At the moment I am definitely leaning towords the laptop. I imagine that Louse is reasonably careful with her things. Dropping a laptop can be expensive. Also they can be stolen more easily than a desk top.
Perhaps keeping One desktop computer with all of the data of the other three stored on an External Hard drive and one shiny new Laptop. This way, you can waiver between Desktop and Laptop and store all of your information from the previous other three desktops on the notebook, the Desktop and additionally a good hardrive.
@Aerozymphatique I love the flexibility that portable hard drives provide. I am a little leery of cloud storage and will keep my own data. Just remember to do your back ups. I have a big problem with keeping my desk organized. Taking the desk top computer away gives me space. While I haven't done away with it (them) yet, I am tempted. Also I have too much junk in my life. I have 4 old style monitors in my storage room and a coupe of old computers and a few printers. Got to shed stuff.
@RobotBacon couldn't be more right. To name a couple, filmmakers and gamers require the ability to continuously upgrade their machines to keep up with software that takes up ridiculous computing power and memory. If you want to keep up with current editing software and play new games, it'd be best to have a system that's easily upgradable and maintainable. If portability is key though, say for someone who spends time on long flights but still needs computing power, a laptop is unbeatable.
@RobotBacon The desk top is comfy. The keyboard, mouse and monitor are all in the right place for convenient use. The laptop slips around on your knee. Still it's so portable. You don't have to go into a designated room to use it. You can sit with friends, converse and compute all at the same time.
I only use laptops nowadays. I'm never in a situation where I need the latest confounded processor with 3ghz quad core and 3gb of vram, and find that laptops are just neater/tidier overall making them easier to use.
I hate laptops, they are over priced, slow, have terribly small screens, they are not customizable, you cant build your own and they are uncomfortable to use. The only benefit they have is portability but i haven't said once in the last few years "man i with i had laptop so i could use it here" I hate every aspect of laptops and don't understand why people tolerate there issues.
I like the way you say 'mouse'

Gaming is better on a desktop, laptop screens are tiny, keyboards aren't very good.

I wouldn't say that a laptop is cheaper than a desktop, as you state..
This is because you have to compare specifications for specifications. A $400 latop is -very- slow compared to a $400 desktop computer.

That's like saying a potato is better than an orange - it's only about what you, as an individual user, need.

I think tablets will eventually make laptops obsolete. You can easily upgrade a desktop PC but not a laptop.
