Had one of these back in the 90s. Also had the recording version. Both had the woodgrain cabinet but the recorder fascia was silver. Which was kind of a bad idea as if you bought the player and recorder for a dubbing system they wouldn't match in decor.
It's a bit of a pitty you don't have a Realistic brand amplifier or tuner or turntable to match the cassette deck or speakers, you could make quite a nice little stereo system with that gear.
What country was this unit made in? Does it have a 3 digit sticker on it with the first and last digits seporated gy an A? If so, that's the date code, it should indicate to you when the set was made, I'm guessing late 80's or early 90's.
I didn't know Sound Design products were sold outside of the US, as far as I know they were never available in Australia where I live, but if I'm wrong I hope someone will correct me.
They were never very big here, but l think Bluenazz said he has an 8-track like mine,so they were certainly made for Canada. Can't vouch for whether they were made for the Australian market l'm afraid!
I had the recording version. Mine was new in the late '90s and was branded as an Optimus. It had Dolby B NR, a tape counter, manual level controls, and even stereo microphone inputs. Overall a very nice deck for its small size.
Oh how I miss the Realistic Logotype, I always like the Realistic logo, even when I was 8 years old when my grandmother gave me a Realistic personal stereo a bit like that except mine didn't have a rewind button or a tape selector. It did have bass boost however, a very simple machine with auto stop.
Well in my last comment on this video I said I had a unit like this one, actually I didn't the unit I'm talking about was one of those little personal stereo tape things, a Walkman type device made by Realistic with the oh so awesome logo on its front. The unit I had lasted about 3 years until one day when I dropped it, after the the play button wouldn't stay down unliess I held it down, I got rid of the unit in the end.
There was a silver version with auto-reverse too - during the 90s I remember seeing one in a restraunt my parents often took me to. It was always left running, and played the same background music tape over and over again for several years without a hitch.

That's funny! I picked up one of those Soundesign 8 track players yesterday for $1 at a yard sale. I thought that I recognized it from somewhere (:->

l expect you displaced a little spring in the locking plate for the buttons when you dropped it.

I had one like this, it also had Dolby and auto Reverse, but like yours it was only a player.
