I was 16 when I watched this movie the first time. I thought Troy was so cool and intelligent. When I watched it 13 years later I thought he's just a lazy, pseudo-intellectual guy...

I felt the same way about him in both ways that you mentioned.

Then I realized where he is coming from. He was afraid of becoming another brick in the wall. He doesn't want to do the nine to five thing. He doesn't want to live a meaningless life where he would give his all just to be rewarded at the end of his life with cancer and a stupid gold watch as a reward for it all.
