FUCK OFF WITH DT ALREADY! I love them and everything, but the only thing they are similar between each other is odd time signature. Not even same genre.
@DRINKSandDRUMS Any top level drummer like Gavin H. would have no problem with this if put in the position. Can't hear him ever doing something like this though...Porcupine Tree doesn't write stuff like this. Vinnie Colaiuta was doing shit like this in the late 70's with Frank Zappa. Guarantee Vinnie could play this song first time seeing the sheet music in one take...probably while daydreaming. And I would rank Gavin closer to Vinnie, not Bobby J., as far as drummers go.
@DRINKSandDRUMS I feel like both drummers are fantastic in their own right and genre. let them both be an inspiration to you as musicians. But hell Bobby is fucking insane! and Gavin has that sweet technicality through his groove and style. DRUMS SHRED
Despite the oddness, I love how the jazz elements manage to come out and be noticed. I love prog music, these guys did a wonderful job with not only the technicality, but they also didn't lose the feel of the music, to the point where it just sounded like atonal guitar work with percussion. Also I'm a huge DT fan, and I can't stand these idiots who the second they hear odd time signatures with syncopated guitar riffs they immediately mention DT. That's very common in prog music, DT was not first
@manmadeaids - Dude buckethead and Ron are surely fans of each other. If you don't think so, you have not really heard buckethead... That dude is also all over the place. Of course Ron is way better technically for sure (who is better? , but buckethead is definitely an amazing guitarist, with a similar feel on some records and deserves some definite respect. I would recommend "Kaleidoscalp" for one... Or praxis, Or even Cuckoo Clocks of hell.. That shit is heavy and Different.
I feel like the deeper I get into music study, the more I will appreciate this music. This is definitely not background music. This is all encompassing, swallow-your-entire-perceptual-field music. Love that last chord. It makes me breathe a sigh of happiness.
This is awesome and Dream Theater is great and this is music for the more demanding musician. Why would some dumb fuck say Dream Theater sucks just because they favor this and other more underground music more?I just got back from the Bahama's and most of those islander's haven't heard of ether!I was so happy to get back to the state's.I hate calypso music in the first place but after 3 day's I would have been happy to hear the monkee's.The world outside is big.
Don't get me wrong, there's not a song by them I don't like, this one just takes the cake. 4:56 - 5:46 just blows me away.
And then, at the very end of an extremely technical album, after the barrage of mosquito brain surgery, there's that calm passage. I think the rest is for our benefit as much as it is for the musicians!

Wow 1:57 is like a carbon copy of riffs from dream theaters Dance Of Eternity...still amazing nonetheless...but you can kind of see their influences showing.
I'm too lazy to listen to a whole dream theater song to pick out where it sounds like that. What part of the dream theatre song is it at? or is it a chorus or something, cuz i'd be interested in hearing it.
Just for your information this is Ron Jarzombeks music, he is as well the guitar player for Watchtower! And Watchtower are Dream Theaters main influence. So if anybody sounds like Spestic Inc, then it's Dream Theater trying to sound like Spestic/Tower and not the other way around.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The beginning of this song is strikingly similar to that of "When The Water Breaks" by Liquid Tension Experiment (the part when the guitar comes in after the keyboard intro, etc.)
Too bad that Ink Complete came out two years earlier. I guess the song you're referring to actually sounds strikingly similar to Mosquito Brain Surgery, by Spastic Ink.
Contrary to common belief, John Petrucci didn't inspire anything and everything that involves progressive metal. Cripes.
@Gradius143 I wouldn't take one over the other necisarily. I mean considering all the albums petrucci has written for DT, LTE, Explorers Club, and his solo album, he deserves some serious respect. Then again, Jarzombeks have worked with spastic, blotted, arctopus, and gordian, so thats something to be respected as well. I just look at them both as excellent examples of musical composers at their own special places on the spectrum.
can't or can? This is very, very good but it's little too broken to me. My ears like Blotted Science (another of Jarzombek's projects) a little more. But in any case, this (and many other bands) blows DT out of the water. DT is just more famous, that's all. Not necessarily better.
@micanut48 they are different. this is crazy prog music, like blotted science is... DT can be as progressive as Ron's songs. Ron simply elaborates his (prog) elements on a bigger scale i think. DT is more general prog music. plenty of styles with prog elements all around.. i think DT could play this imo.
sorry if my sentences make no sense, my english sucks.
@666quebec666 do you think DT could play this good? I understand they are very, very good musicians on their own but I doubt they are this accomplished. There is this sick element in Ron Jarzombek's stuff, sort of like some classical pieces of top old masters, where only a few artists can actually perform their compositions. I think RZ belongs to this few. His obsession with perfection can be matched by only handful of people in the world. I honestly think DT does not belong to this group. peace
The balance between technically and musically interesting must be addressed. Attending only to technicality and ignoring musical appeal leaves a mess of notes
they don't suck, they are just as amazing as spastik ink and blotted science, but these guys are technical metal and they are prog, its just a different genre. Liquid tension experiment has some of the most amazing metal compositions of all times.
Its when arrogant musicians that think they're too good for a certain style of music do "over the top" progressive music to try to show their skills off. Frankly, I can respect talent, but I would never listen to any of it because it isn't written as music, it's written as a challenge. It hardly sounds like music either (and this isn't a call out to say I don't know metal or anything, since I listen to far more 'brutal' stuff, on occasion).
I never said that at all. I listen to plenty of genres of metal, including some progressive bands. The only reason I brought up the fact that i listened to more "brutal" music was only to avoid people telling me to go back to listening to nickelback and billy talent and that i didn't know what i was talking about because i dont listen to metal.
If you listen to far more 'brutal' stuff, then how do you qualify what sounds like music and what doesn't?
I find this extremely enjoyable b/c I can hear the song structure - it reminds me of classical structure where there's more than a chorus verse bridge allignment...
this is *clearly* written as music, just because you can't hear the music in it doesn't mean the artists were merely showing off their technical proficiency... jeez
@corecorina There is some more brutal neo-classical tech death out there, if you look hard enough. There is a band from italy called fleshgod apocalypse, and they incorporate a lot of piano intros and solos, and a lot of their riffs sound very classical music inspired. It's very favorable in my opinion, but like you said, its a little bit harder to decipher the sound structure through the speed and heaviness they play at. Their older band hour of penance was good too, check them out
Music is just organised sound dude, after that anything goes..people have been writing music as a 'challenge' for hundreds of years, from bach to shostakovich, music to challenge a norm or concensus, in the case of Spastik Ink, it is a case of writing music to create a polarity against all the mediocre crap that is spilled from the mainstream
