Obefore my Jack passed away of simple old age he chalked up one possum five mice three snakes almost a kitten stopped him doing that almost killed a grown cat though. muiltipule fights with cats maybe a scratch or cut here or there always properly takin care of it they were a worry . We love and miss that dog till this day .

I always wonder what it would look like if my JRT got a hold of one, especially since I will be going to Ohio where plenty of small prey animals come into the yard. I will have to watch him - not that it would do any good by the looks of things. I'd be worried he'd get bit, but he's a big boy - a bit bigger than yours and I am sure yours has the shark teeth to match as well! As for people being upset, when you have a certain breed of dog, it is interesting to see them actually work.

Wish my dogs could CATCH the ones we have around here... they're at least smart enough to stay on the top of the fence. A paintball gun with hard rubber balls seems to do the trick, but they fly into the neighbors yard, where sadly there are no dogs. Oh well- they "learn" (however- sometimes the learning curve is a short one!).
May I point out that before it was 'your yard', and even still now, your land was once home to wildlife. Dam jacks are fearless mines went up against those and nutrea and even a rather large racoon. Scared me until my little girl dog she's about 50 pounds came runnin and they both tore the crap out of it. My jack had only one tiny scratch on his side possible only due to hit the fence while running i suspect .

Typical jack russell. My jack loves to hunt birds. It's usually funny and there's alot of FAIL. But when I went to the side of the house I found this huge pile of dead pidgeons with their insides eaten clean. There was at least 8 stacked up.
I'm not crazy. I've just been showing this breed, working, and studying it for 8 years.
It says it on the JRTCA websites, these dogs were bred to bolt, and mark their quarry. Not, and never, to kill it.
Now, I'm not saying the terrierman/woman won't dispatch the animal. But it isn't the dog's job to kill it, it's job is to do exactly what it was bred to do. Bolt, or hold.
Does it matter? As in, does it matter whether the dog barks or kills? Or does it matter as in, what effect does it have on you?
It matters, because a dog killing an animal is much crueler, imo. A quick shot or blow to the head is much quicker and more humane. And preserving what a breed was bred to do is important.
As to if it matters to you or not, it may or may not. You probably don't care either way.
Yes, I'm aware of this. However, nearly every breed of dog is no longer used for what it was originally bred for. And if someone wants a dog for ratting they will go for a JRT every time 'cos they're just the best for it. Although not bred for it, JRTs are fantastic killers.
Actually, you'd be surprised at just how many breeds of dogs still do what they were bred to do.

JRT's are such great dogs. Probably the most fearless animal I have ever seen. Mine tried to take on 2 Pit Bulls once. They would have torn him to shreds, but he would have tried. Had to let him go to another family because he was too aggressive around the baby.

Wish my dogs could CATCH the ones we have around here... they're at least smart enough to stay on the top of the fence. A paintball gun with hard rubber balls seems to do the trick, but they fly into the neighbors yard, where sadly there are no dogs. Oh well- they "learn" (however- sometimes the learning curve is a short one!).

May I point out that before it was 'your yard', and even still now, your land was once home to wildlife. You should be thrilled that wildlife can still somehow manage to survive in suburbia with you, instead of encouraging your dog to maul a possum just for fun. He's obviously bored. Maybe get your fat american ass off the couch and take it for a walk instead.

why r u ppl so agenst JRT doing what they do best is hunt and kill things like that i have a jack myself and im very proud of him when he does thiungs like that it means that i dont have to care about things getting in my house because he KILLS it before it gets in so i say go for let it tear the fucking things apart possums r nasty as hell so kill all of them if it was up to me

Dam jacks are fearless mines went up against those and nutrea and even a rather large racoon. Scared me until my little girl dog she's about 50 pounds came runnin and they both tore the crap out of it. My jack had only one tiny scratch on his side possible only due to hit the fence while running i suspect .

not really my jack Russell almsost killed one but we put him away and the possum didnt really do anything but play dead after we put my dog away but i could be wrong mabey the possum was old or weak

Typical jack russell. My jack loves to hunt birds. It's usually funny and there's alot of FAIL. But when I went to the side of the house I found this huge pile of dead pidgeons with their insides eaten clean. There was at least 8 stacked up.

Absolutely. My JRT is not allowed to go after 'Possum's. Hunting 'Possum's is stupid. They are very beneficial and just about as peaceful as a dove.
Now squirrels?
My JRT can run up tree about five or so feet when she's really after them.

Jrts aren't supposed to be kill dogs. They're baying dogs, they're supposed to bark at their quarry, or bolt it. Not kill.

I'm not crazy. I've just been showing this breed, working, and studying it for 8 years.
It says it on the JRTCA websites, these dogs were bred to bolt, and mark their quarry. Not, and never, to kill it.
Now, I'm not saying the terrierman/woman won't dispatch the animal. But it isn't the dog's job to kill it, it's job is to do exactly what it was bred to do. Bolt, or hold.

Does it matter? As in, does it matter whether the dog barks or kills? Or does it matter as in, what effect does it have on you?
It matters, because a dog killing an animal is much crueler, imo. A quick shot or blow to the head is much quicker and more humane. And preserving what a breed was bred to do is important.
As to if it matters to you or not, it may or may not. You probably don't care either way.

They weren't bred to kill rats. They were bred to bolt or hold fox.
A smart jack knows the difference between a rat and a groundhog/fox/etc.
Although, not all hunting jrts are used for ratting. Ratting was not their original purpose.

Yes, I'm aware of this. However, nearly every breed of dog is no longer used for what it was originally bred for. And if someone wants a dog for ratting they will go for a JRT every time 'cos they're just the best for it. Although not bred for it, JRTs are fantastic killers.

Actually, you'd be surprised at just how many breeds of dogs still do what they were bred to do.
I don't exactly like killing, but I don't mind it. They weren't meant to be kill dogs.
The only way it would bother me is if she passed this off as true Jrt hunting. Or tried to get people to believe that this is what the Jrt was bred for.

JRT's are such great dogs. Probably the most fearless animal I have ever seen. Mine tried to take on 2 Pit Bulls once. They would have torn him to shreds, but he would have tried. Had to let him go to another family because he was too aggressive around the baby.

as a fellow possum hunting enthusiast, i must say that this possum is a runt. me and my merry network of possum gobblers used to hunt possum upwards of 5 times the size of this until my knees caved in. only the ignorant dont enjoy their sweet taste.
