I've actually gone out with Matt a few times while I was in college. He was very upfront and matter-of-fact about his past, you have to admire that. I'm not sure I could be so honest, that takes guts. But he was always very much the Southern gentleman and lots of fun to be around. I was completely shocked to see him on my tv- I had no idea that he sang so well! I'm stoked for him and hey swooning ladies- what the camera didn't really emphasize is that this guy is MASSIVELY tall. Like 6'5 tall.

Because it's really not just a singing contest. It's called "American Idol," not "American Singer." The show is basically trying to find people who will sell records. Singing is the most important part, yes, but it's not the only part. The people who buy the records, even if they don't think so, will also take personality, stage presence and style into account.

Ok, I get it, but why do people sympathize with a guy who was not, for example, mistakenly accused but paid for his own mistake? He shouldn't have mentioned this fact at all, that's nothing to idolize. Is it so impressive that he wasn't stricken by what he had experianced? But other people have various tragedies as well. Why does this amplitude matter (from ashes up to the stars), why does a person who didn't fail is somehow less attractive and this guy is praised?

That he mentions it is indication that his past and his effort to redeem himself is a strong motivation in why he sings - so this is relevant. I think people are truly moved by the conviction he has in his presentation. They aren't moved by what he did, but rather by his efforts to grow beyond his mistakes and pay homage to his family. This life experience flavors the passion in his voice and that is moving.
