I would like to see a pro driver in the street, real life driving conditions including ice, then we can talk, a good car could help you, but nothing can beat common sense, probably you could sort a snowy road but ice is a completely different history if you drive recklessly in winter whether is the Dakotas or Canada you are calling disaster, be safe, live longer.
Agree.... Drive smooth and look ahead.. no big deal..when you get used to it and understand the car dynamics.. Winter teached you a lot about what the car is doing, hence you are aware of Driving rather then being driven as so many are in dry conditions. btw..traction aid help you on ice.a regular non traction control would not get you up a 5-30% gradient(slope)..and individual wheel breaking..can only be done with the traction aids that factors driving speed, steering direction..
Meh. Nothing too special. This is basically a simulation of winter in South Dakota, except that in South Dakota there are other cars bordering the turns.
Sometimes, it gets really fun. Imagine this: a road covered completely with ice. No traction. You have to drive that road to get to school, work, etc. That is South Dakota winter.
I'm pretty sure that my part of South Dakota gets more than any part of Minnesota and even if it doesn't the roads are plowed way less. They practically don't plow the roads in my town.
There is no need to have All Wheel Drive(4WD/or what ever the name is) when you drive at roads.
Of course it gets better grip for example in rallies, but in everyday life, no need for AWD unless you drive off-road.(or pull some heavy trailers)
Maybe it's just what you get used to. Or not.
I had FWDs about 5 years after I got license, after that I've owned just RWDs. I've drove all sorts of AWDs every now and then but one thing is sure, no going back to FWDs.
cccc.... ok whateve you say... look in my country i have winter for a 4-5 months... and 4WD rules here... and its much safetier than FWD or RWD... you have never drive the car with 4WD... and you said that 4WD is just for offroad... so that means lamborghini gallardo is for off road ???
over here we have snow on the ground 5-7 months every year.. as I mentioned earlier the BMW test base at Arjeplog is some hundreds kms south from here ;) I wouldn't say AWD is safer than RWD or FWD... but again it's what you are used to. some of my friends do have xdrives or quattros and that is their choice. I prefer RWD, no problems so far(I've had this car for 3 winter now) with 400hp and RWD, just remember to switch off DSC. BTW if you can read I also mentioned I've driven AWDs ;)
x-drive rullz ... so much better than a quattro audi system that u cannot even compare these 2 ...even better than subaru awd system , they can only dream of a awd that can send all the power throw a single wheel ..bmw done it again :)
cough cough .. audi made it first audi made it bettter. plus your comparing a german car to a japanese car subaru awd is better so is the one on the EvO but not as classy of cars
If I understand, Subura..until maybe recently had no Driver Aids ( Stability) for their cars....I see many of them in the ditch..(not so much the AWD..but overconfidence in the AWD) ..
Where can i see bmw e 46 traction control test winter?? can someone help me?! tnx

The x-drive is probably a copy of the Audi`s Quattro system.

@Henzzman
BMW got their 4wd expertise from Land Rover, when they bought the Rover group, in the 1990s. BMW no longer owns Land Rover.

Yeah, but do they have permanent awd.Because as we know, most jeeps dont posess a permanent awd.

haven't seen any reason to get X-drive or quattro... I drive E39 M5 and my home is even norther than BMWs Winter Test Base.
AWD is for off-road. (or rally)

sooooo many things wrong with this post.
BMW has NOT done it again. They have simply taken Subaru's balanced AWD system, made it unbalanced and called it X-Drive.
Subaru has been able to put power to one wheel at a time for years...it's nothing new to them.
Please, don't post things you have NO idea about :)
