The "heart" of Chiva Regal is a single malt whisky called Strathisla (Chivas even has a visitor center dedicated to Chivas Regal at the distillery). Since Strathisla is a Speyside whisky, it's probably not surprising that the Islay whiskys used in the blend are not very distinctive. Incidentally Strathisla is notable for being the oldest continuously operating distillery in Scotland so this brand has history.
from canada. chivas! i love it! it is easy drinking! its not too dark. comparable price to some of the off colur johnny walkers and what not. i like some of the more difficult scotches but just to taste. If i bring a bottle to a gathering anyone will drink it and not complain 2 much. where as if i brought my favorit cheap scotch 'ballentines' some people would not be able to join me probably.
I just bought a bottle of chivas regal 12 last night for the first time. I must say I was not as impressed as I hoped I was going to be. I found that it didn't differentiate itself enough from the lower priced scotches to really impress me. I suspect that you are correct that it may be a bit over priced. but I enjoyed it more than you did i would say.
I'm no fan of Chivas, I agree it's bland. I would add that it has a grain alcohol aftertaste that I dislike- a very vodka like flavor. As someone who drinks malt whisky almost exclusively, and enjoys Islay malts, I think Johnnie Walker Black is the best bet for blends- slightly smokey without the hyped up price of 'premium' blends like Chivas or JW Blue.
this nice friend is cool and had made a very good nice lovely comment, i feel that now i know that Chivas is not just good because all the people use to buy it because is so famous, BUT FAMOUS don´t mean it is just good, well from cold and bad Sweden my regards to cool UK cheers
Chivas - a ladies whisky, (no not really) but it's what the girls and i drink out'n'about. it's everywhere, from namib to the dundee tav Alice Springs, outback aus. a fine sipper, i like chivas (& most blends) on the rocks.
It's great that you've found a blend which you like, especially since it's readily available... I just feel it's overpriced for what you get... Have you had Glenlivet 12? Next time you get a Scotch on the rocks, ask for the readily available Glenlivet 12... in my view, it is far superior and less expensive as well. Thanks for your comments.. cheers!
This review was ok, now i dont agree with you on all your notes, as the finish for me lingeres a powerful hazelnut flav, with a little numbing of the tonuge,. Chivas is best served on a few spring water ice cubes(personal preference) but i dont really get into it that much, it is a bit rough going down, anyways i really enjoy all your reviews keep`em a coming, also if your going to review blends, you should review the J&B RARE, which is a fav. of mine, as a few nights a week nightcap. Cheers.
It seems reasonable that you may have a different experience... this is not a very consistent whisky. Of the several bottles of Chivas which I've sampled, they each seem to be different...
I agree with you on this one, deff. not the prince of scotch. The ones I tried in order excellence: 1 The Macallen 12 sherry cask best all around scotch, good with water or with out 2 Highland Park 12 (smokey) great smokey taste 3 Balvenie doublewood 12 just tried this one 4 Auchentoshan 3 wood 12 VERY smokey and thick like syrup most Bold 5 The Glenlivet 12 sweet 6 The Glenfiddich 12 sweet: bad taste with water added 7Chivas Regal bland
Nice review. You and Peatluvr are a lot of fun to watch. Personally, I like pouring a blend like Chivas over an ice cube, adding a splash of water, and watching American Idol. But try White Horse -- a cheap blend that's kind of peaty...Keep up the good work.
Holy cow... this is the best reply ever. THANK YOU! Honest, forthright, you're not breaking my balls for disliking Chivas, then you follow it up with a sound recommendation. Thanks.
Regarding White Horse: I've been looking for this for some time without success. I've heard it contains Lagavulin. I'd love to try it but I just can't find it.
Anyway, thanks for watching and thanks for the constructive feedback. Cheers!
Thanks for the feedback. You know, it's interesting- I was at a party the other night and I had another dram of Chivas. It was more enjoyable; it was less sweet, it had more smoke and more peat. A bit odd but I suppose it's a little inconsistent.
First of, I like whiskey or whisky (whatever you prefer).
I also like Chivas 12 and 18.
But I think if you're going to comment on a drink like this you have way to much spare time. It would not be as succesful as it is right now if people thought it was crap. This Chivas 12 rocks for most people.
(and who is gonna wait 10 minutes before drinking?)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year you you and peatluvr and all friends! I was tasting testerday Talisker 18 and is almost like lagavulin is very good hihihihihi!

I find it kind of boring, not very interesting. For blends I much prefer Dimple Pinch or Buchanans.

I have indeed tried glen..12 I typically use livet and fiddich 12 as my all round house malt.
I agree in superiority and price, although its only about 30p (60c?) a shot in the ausi outback for a chiv.
Great collection you have, thanks for sharing. :)
