@AonyDino. Well, the song is about the lamented death of American culture. Madonna's cover of this tune confirms it. There isn't much to like in this cover, but my top 3 reasons:
1. Ironically, she leaves out the part of the song that references Altamonte, which she sort of bears a resemblance.
2. The backwards imagery isn't cool. It's meant to put down Americans.
She did a good cover but this isn't a song to be dancing and moving your body like you're sexy, it has a powerful and sad message and should be sung with another attitude, even though the twist on the song is good, maybe if she stopped doing that contorsionism it would have been an amazing contrast. Probably the worst about the video is SHE
This is not a song to be covered lightly, and in fact only an artist with Madonna's credibility could have a prayer of doing so successfully. Sunday alot of her fans will be watching wanting her to sing her hits...I'm hoping she does this one.

I think a lot of people have missed the point of the song/clip. Madonna took an iconic American song and adapted it to her own style, which is what any singer should do instead of trying to imitate the original. The reason why she shows everyday Americans from all backgrounds is because of the song's 'lasting appeal', as a representation of all Americans, regardless of race, creed or color. It's as if it were an anthem from another time and this is her tribute to it. I thought it was great.

Your change up has to also be a good song by itself!

I have actively avoided listening to this version of American Pie ever since it was released. Being a massive fan of Madonna's early work, I found myself very disappointed with some of her later efforts. And as a fan of this song for many years I was afraid she would ruin it. I finally succumbed to an insane desire to listen to this, and have only one comment to make. Musically, i really prefer this version but... Madonna just killed the beautiful lyrics and all what Don Mac Clean wanted to say when he wrote it. The point of this song is completely lost and that's why this version sucks.

I have actively avoided listening to this version of American Pie ever since it was released. Being a massive fan of Madonna's early work, I found myself very disappointed with some of her later efforts. And as a fan of this song for many years I was afraid she would ruin it. I finally succumbed to an insane desire to listen to this, and have only one comment to make. Congratulations Madonna, you managed to totally decimate an amazing song, and ruin it for anyone who has not heard the original.

@hooha123424 As I stated, I am a long-time fan of the original and that obviously means that I would most likely prefer it to any covers. However, if you read the comments on videos of this song, you will find that the majority of people agree that the original was better. And as to you saying that I am wrong, it is a matter of personal opinion and I am entitled to mine, as you are entitled to yours. And successful doesn't always mean good, look at Mr. Blobby.

@azulichigo XD Yes, but she did a great job too. I think that this words and music video are perfect together. They show America, with her all aspects, all cultur. Her good and bad sides. She showed that America is not only west or east ( most of European think that). It's a very touchy song.

The worst thing is I have absolutely no clue where Madonna was trying to go with this. At least, I couldn't tell between her waving various body parts in front of the camera, quick shots to morbid, emotionless, or sad people staring, more body part waving, shots of couples making out and still managing to stare at the camera, then some more body part waving complete with Madonna pulling up her pants with surprising difficulty. Not to mention her cover choice to go with all of this...=/
