  • @000Winter000 thanks - I think I will try that. I tried the idea of putting a toilet paper roll at the base of the plant but I don't think it works very well. It doesn't stay put very well and it gets mushy in the rain. so I will try tin foil. I'm so scared of having this problem again this year. ~Amanda

  • This year is my first time ever planting pumpkins and exactly this morning I saw a weird bug flying from one of the three pumpink plants I planted in late may and by coincidence found out IT WAS A SQUASH VINE BORER!!!!!

What can I do to avoid the masacre? Help guys, please!! :'(

  • @yomero1978 check out the youtuber austinsimpleliving He did a video with a tip on how to discourage this stupid bug. awesome, some people say to wrap the base of the plant in tin foil to keep the bug from laying its eggs because the bug likes to lay its eggs near the base of the plant. once the eggs are laid, I don't know what good we can do. after my attempt of salvaging the zucchini plants, the plants continued growing all summer but I didn't get any more edible zucchinis off them. ~Amanda

  • Thank you for sharing this video! I am new to gardening. I killed the squash bugs but didn't know about the squash vine borer. I just ran out and pulled pretty much ALL of them and cut the bad parts off. I only had 3 with roots so I replanted them. I also learned from another video about putting foil around the base of the plant to keep them from sucking the stalk dry. I hope that works!

  • I discovered those vine borers last week, and it broke my heart too. I have done minor surgery on my plants also, to get them out. I have had up to 3 borers in one plant. They are in nearly all of my viney plants. ugh~! I'm sad.

  • @crazy4googoos It's so sad that these things destroy all the plants... we are taking precautions this year to prevent these nasty bugs from destroying our plants. Neem oil should also help prevent these nasties as well.

  • Did it work? Did your plant survive?

  • FOOKERS! I dun wan t them in my garden - how did it go?

  • looks very similar to root rot

    Nasty!

  • @badboyorganics yup... it was super gross. That yellow junk... I have no idea why it does that. -Randy

  • @GettingThereGreen I believe that the yellow stuff is their poop. Gross yes, but I think that's what it is. Usually the vine borer likes winter squash varieties more than summer squash.

  • God I hope they don't live here! Oh that's discusting! yeah stabbing worms! lol! wow that looked like surgery on a zuchini.....hope it survives!

  • @jihadacadien Not sure where they stop... could be up your way... have to look into it.

  • @GettingThereGreen Or I'll keep it a surprise ;)

  • That is a new one to me too and disgusting.

  • @dalecalder2003 don't quote me on this, but I think that it is too cold in NB for these particular insects to survive a winter so I don't think they are a problem in NB... but I might be wrong. ~Amanda

  • @GettingThereGreen I hope you are right at least I've never heard of the miserable things before and I know a lot of gardeners here and in Maine.

  • @dalecalder2003 And this is why we put the warning at the beginning of the video. Yuck. -Randy

  • @dalecalder2003 So you never got that either?

  • ACK... so disgusting!

I'm sorry about your Zukes... I hope your Zucchini recovers ;(

We are having a HUGE problem with grasshoppers this year. They're eating our peppers and tomatoes and I have no idea what to do to get rid of em organically. They are literally eating our tomatoes down to the seeds and gel... there are tons of them and they're all over the place ;(

  • @jujutubes we have grasshoppers too. I am not sure if they are doing much damage in our garden or not. Insects have been really bad this year. ~Amanda

  • @jujutubes That sounds nuts... can you video this?

  • @GettingThereGreen unfortunately we don't have any way to get it on video. I might try and get hubby to build me a chicken moat around the garden next year to see if that helps. You basically create a double fenced area around your garden kind of like a moat but there isn't any water in it... just chickens! They're supposed to eat any creepy crawlies that try to get in and out the garden.

  • Oh No!! Just watched this video. That is a fairly heavy infestation. Good news about the new roots. Even with 1 plant, you should yield enough zuchinni for yourselves. Nasty little buggers, huh! Take care!

  • @austinsimpleliving I have hope for the plants to grow new roots. They are all looking pretty weak today but they all have little signs for recovery so... maybe...

    ~Amanda

  • That sucks... good luck!

  • wow need to check mine too, hope i don't have that on mine. ewww.

  • @niffer58 yeah, I didn't even realize I had a problem like that until I started trimming back sick looking leaves. That gave me a really good look at the base of the plant and I realized I had a problem. If you see that weird orangey sawdust/cottagecheese stuff coming out near the base of the plant, then you can bet you have the borer in there. ~Amanda

  • EWWWW!!! I know they aren't caterpillars but that's gross!!! I hope your zucchini survives, and I hope your pumpkins aren't infected! :( good luck!

  • @bcgarden2010 wait a second... i guess they kinda are caterpillars... doe!

  • @bcgarden2010 I thought about you tonight as we were doing this!!! LOL If you watch, you'll see that I'm wearing gloves and I was still really disgusted with touching any of it. ~Amanda

  • Very informative and interesting. When you mentioned on an earlier video that the zuc was blown over I assumed that it was no big deal. Well ya live and ya learn. That's kinda what its all about I suppose.

Maybe DE powder will take care of those things next time. Good Luck and keep smiling.

  • @justkarmatoo I really thought it was just that the storm had blown the plants over. but when I cut back some sick looking leaves it gave me a better view of the base and I realized the problem was bigger than wind damage. ~Amanda

  • Aww your poor plants :( So far I haven't had problems with squash bores. Lots of squash bugs though! Hope your able to save some.

  • @HomesteadAcres all hope isn't lost yet. They might recover. ~Amanda
