  • Beautiful song. My great grandfather and his brother fought at Gallipoli with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, just two young lads from Ohakune. My great grandfather Paddy was wounded on 8 Aug 1915 during the daylight assault on Chunuk Bair before the Wellington Regiment went up. His brother James was killed in the same attack.

    Very proud of them.

  • Bless them all the long, the short and the tall

  • sums it all up.. it pulls at the heart strings..

  • one of the greatest songs ever done . so much meaning and wonderfully done.

  • Reminds me of my daddy and my lovely childhood

  • superb.

  • Stop war

  • my last name is clancy

  • One of the finest performances of any sort of music I've ever heard. Simply stunning.

  • such an amazing song i love this version it always brings tears to my eyes

  • You hear alot of shit.2 of Liams brothers fought in ww2.

  • Shane MacGowan's version is still my favorite.

  • @Terrakinetic Shane's is good when he is sober and not slurring, but Liam is the best balladeer ever to record this song. RIP Liam, well done!

  • sensational, so powerful!

  • The song is called "And the Band Played 'Waltzing Matilda'"

  • Is this version on CD anywhere?

Brilliant stuff. Some novelists and filmmakers spend thousands of pages and millions of dollars trying to be this evocative. Clancy manages to evoke emotion time and place in a small seven minute span.

I think if angels can sing, they sound like Liam Clancy.

  • @hanshotfirst1138 This is a powerful anti-war song. And this is a great version.

  • @TedMichaelMorgan I listened to the same song and did not hear anti war at all. I heard about the Brave and the honorable. I heard about a mans tragedy in battle and his personal journey to live with what war brings. Well Done Mr. Clancy! R.I.P.

  • @TedMichaelMorgan the most powerful anti-war song in my estimation. it's heart wrenching.

  • As much as I appreciate the uploader's intent, this isn't the name of the song.

  • No billion-pound Hollywood blockbuster could ever recreate a story half so vividly as he does here, just himself and his guitar. He is the embodiment of 'artist', for me.

  • @jenni4claire tom hanks would come very close

  • @jenni4claire Well said what a talent we have lost.Hard to believe one family could be this talented.RIP boys. John Gleeson

  • Yes there are worse things than dieing hope you never get there

  • wow

  • no words can fill the dark shadow left by the death of an artist. :°(

  • I love Liam. RIP .

  • What a story, all true and told by the best, ... RIP Liam.

  • This is simply great!

  • This is one of my favorites by Liam Clancy. It ties with "Will You Go Lassie," "Patriot Game" and "The Parting Glass" for me.

  • And to think that I missed Liam playing in my local theatre in Blanchardstown, Draiocht. I'm still kicking myself. He was a great troubadour, never to be repeated.

  • absolutely beautiful!!!!!

  • First time I have heard singin "Walzing Matilda" with this emotion.

Liam doesn't just sing the song he lives it.

As a "Dubliners" enthusiast, yet I'm fan of their roots as well.

  • Really moving. Thank you for posting.

  • This song is called 'And the band played Waltzing Matilda'. It was written by Australian/Scott Eric Bogle. The actual song 'Waltzing Matilda' was written by Australian poet poet A.B. 'Banjo Patterson' in the 19th century. It is one of Australia unofficial anthems.

  • @jimfredmaxken Thanks for the info. This song strikes the heart. Been there and seen it -- another war in another place and time.

  • Love the Clancy Brothers !

  • God this brings me back home.
