Beautiful song. My great grandfather and his brother fought at Gallipoli with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, just two young lads from Ohakune. My great grandfather Paddy was wounded on 8 Aug 1915 during the daylight assault on Chunuk Bair before the Wellington Regiment went up. His brother James was killed in the same attack.
Brilliant stuff. Some novelists and filmmakers spend thousands of pages and millions of dollars trying to be this evocative. Clancy manages to evoke emotion time and place in a small seven minute span.
I think if angels can sing, they sound like Liam Clancy.
@TedMichaelMorgan I listened to the same song and did not hear anti war at all. I heard about the Brave and the honorable. I heard about a mans tragedy in battle and his personal journey to live with what war brings. Well Done Mr. Clancy! R.I.P.
No billion-pound Hollywood blockbuster could ever recreate a story half so vividly as he does here, just himself and his guitar. He is the embodiment of 'artist', for me.
And to think that I missed Liam playing in my local theatre in Blanchardstown, Draiocht. I'm still kicking myself. He was a great troubadour, never to be repeated.

This song is called 'And the band played Waltzing Matilda'. It was written by Australian/Scott Eric Bogle. The actual song 'Waltzing Matilda' was written by Australian poet poet A.B. 'Banjo Patterson' in the 19th century. It is one of Australia unofficial anthems.

@Terrakinetic Shane's is good when he is sober and not slurring, but Liam is the best balladeer ever to record this song. RIP Liam, well done!

This is one of my favorites by Liam Clancy. It ties with "Will You Go Lassie," "Patriot Game" and "The Parting Glass" for me.

First time I have heard singin "Walzing Matilda" with this emotion.
Liam doesn't just sing the song he lives it.
As a "Dubliners" enthusiast, yet I'm fan of their roots as well.
