They're all nice bikes, but it's a shame they took the 1098. The Ducati 999 was built at the same time the SP2 was made. That should make the comparison SP2 vs. 999 a fair comparison, but instead they took a newer model with more CC's...
of course a bike needs setting up, but how is that something negative? Not every rider weighs the same and not every bike is set up to the same weight and road surface. When I got my 749 it was set up horribly, but after setting up correctly it was just razor sharp steering.
That being said, MCN should really be doing a better job at reviewing. They ride a whole day and then review 3 bikes in 20 seconds???
I was looking at all 3 bikes . I went for the SP2 . It is a more reliable bike whilst giving virtually nothing away in RL riding . Some BST rims ,power comander , carbon cans , and a few carbon bits will have you an icon of a bike that does it just as good with out the upkeep costs or the unreliability of the Ape or the Duc. Don't gurney the Ape or the odometer milage gets reset . How could I buy a RSV Factory when I know the kms could be false ?. The RC51 is a piece of MC history
The RC 51, for a considerably older bike you have to wonder why they tested the bike amongst newer itlain super bikes. This bike is a Rarity in of its own If you havent rode one you can never get used to its torque period. Honda out done their selves when the presented this one to the Market and I have a Mint condition 01 with 13,000 miles on it with all sevice records. I also have a 1198 sp and I still love the RC the most.
I wont own a ducati after my 916 broke a cam belt with 2200 miles on it total carnage, the rubber band belts are ducatis weak spot , italians should spend some r d money and gear drive the cams , desmo valve actuation has no advantage with current spring metallurgy. Except expensive tunups often botched by novice mechanics at dealerships.
Rc 51 is giving up years of development to 1098 , not a resonable contest, get a rc 51 set up for world superbike to compete with the others , would see a drastically different conclusion
I have had the 1198 all year and before that had the TL1000R.. I still cant leave the TLR in the shed for too long.. I still love her.. I also love the SP2.. hey I just love V-twin superbikes and if you have one I love it to!
@TranceFan05 learn to understand English accents. It's their language. The different accents tell us a lot about how our language developed over time.
well figure the SP2 has no Ohlins suspensiion, and also no Aluminium wheels. Brakes do quite well consdering they are not radials.

I think the usable torque is what makes the 1098 so nice to ride. power everywhere and a good top end too.
I'd say that the Duc due to its desmo valvetrain is capable of having what ever grind profile it would like. Not so in a valvespring driven motorbike. No valve float in a desmo as well to my knowledge. But I have to tell you, regardless I love my RC and it rocks. I love Ducati and they rock. I was at Dan Kyle Racing in Sand City and he is working on some very top end Ducatis. Beautiful the aftermarket goodies they make for the 1098.
Im actually considering buying a 1098s, i'm not made of money but I do like the bike and having test rode some, enjoyed it very much. I don't think it matters what bike you have as long as you like it yourself and for your own personal reasons.
Youd be best of buying a second hand SP1/2 and a CBR1000RR. SP1/2 for the sound, Fireblade for its awesome ability. Aprilias are a nightmare to get parts for in the UK and Ducatis cost a fortune to service.
The 1098 is an awesome bike. But I don't see how the RC51 is one of the "strongest rivals" LoL. Now this isn't even a fair fight. The SP2 stopped being a competitor since the 999. The RSV might have been a rival against the 999 but not the 1098. And certainly not the 1198 that's out this year. Can't wait to see if the rumored vtwin by Honda will actually replace the RC51. Not any time soon though
I have found a downside to my 1098...radiator sprung a pinhole leak and it took over a month for Ducati to approve the warranty work...now the radiator and whatever else needs to be shipped from Italy to Hawaii, so...if you do not actually live in Italy...may want to inquire about warrenty work. Yes things take longer in Hawaii but over a month for Ducati to approve the warranty work is bad no matter where you live!
LOL I'm living in Belgium, which is only about 1000km from Bologna and I've already waited 5 months on some repairs :-) And still stuck with Duc in the meantime. I'm crazy or plain stupid :-)
its called making sure they aren't getting hoodwinked. its part of the business. the less warranty repairs you have to pay for, the more capital you have.
i was not familiar with the KTM RC8 so i checked it out and it looks like a good bike in many ways...i have never seen one here in Hawaii in showroom or on the streets. Does KTM participate in MotoGP? Aloha!
i bought a basic 1098 2008 model last July and love the bike...almost 4K miles on it already! Yes expensive but compared to past years prices it is worth it. When the front wheel comes off the ground the bike feels more like a 250cc motocross bike than an 1100cc bike. People constantly comment on the bike, blow their horn or give thumbs up...girls even tell me how nice the bike is...i only wish i looked 1/2 as good as my 1098. If your are thinking Ducati...do it...you will not regret!
Even the old 916 still looks great after all these years, i'm not so sure about the 999 but the 1098 is simply sensational and actually looks better in the flesh than it does in pictures - the best looking and most desirable bike on sale today.
Looks are about all you'll get for that price. Shit i'd rather buy any other 1000cc bike and throw a shit load of performace parts on it. Dollar for dollar you'll get a better performing bike. Ducati= overpriced great looking machine
if i was a road tester i wouldn't be in the bloody van!
and another thing what's with the really poor taste in leathers! power ranger look isn't cool! plenty of decent looking gear about so no excuse really is there!
PS,tell that prick andy downes, who lied when reporting on me at wsb 2001(johnny reynolds, fan faces £5000 bill) that i havent forgot him and one day our paths will cross.
yes. But I hate japanese sport bikes coz they sound like shit (but they are f#@$%king fast!!). Ducati's sound awesome so thats why I like them over Jap bikes. Jap bikes seem to be too similar as well.
it is apples and oranges. I would not go as far to say all duc owners think their bike is the best,.. which is no different than saying all japanese bike owners think their bikes are the best. Ignorance isnot based on what kinda bike you ride. I just think way too many ppl look at a duc rider and say "rich fukin bastard" and never judge the bike. They dont ride one, sit on it, nothin. Ive ridden with many of these ppl, and they are ignorant b/c they know nothing about them, b/c they dont care to
in that case i apologize. You are not the typical jap bike person ive disputed with, and therefore i have respect for you, and do agree. I am just tired of disputing which bike is better BS.Its no different than a camaro freak goin to a mustang forum and posted mustangs are fuckin gay and leaving. Its very simple, ride a bike, if ya dont like it,dont ride it. I love All bikes, but i would never talk shit about a bike i knew nothing about except for the price, which they are damn expensive lol.
There has to be a reason why all the jap manucf. left wsbk. Race what u bring don't bend the rules to be up to par. by the way I never said duc suck balls all I said is that all duc fans say there bike is the best. sorry the 1098 is the best and jap bikes have no character they're all the same.
...for ex you got a vtwin duc sitting next to a 4, and the duc will need a sizable jump in power to match the japanese bike's all out power, and if the rules get bent for the ducati team,(which they prolly are, no denying that)that puts the power ratio pretty much equal for both bikes as far as track use is concerned. If the jap bike then wins,..duc sux ballz,... but if the duc wins,.. its BS and they are cheating. and 99% of those ppl nvr have rode a duc,... all they know is they cant afford it.
i never said they were the best,...... it is you and others saying that they are the worst. ive owned a cbr for my first bike, r1, 93 900ss and 996, so how does defending outlandish claims make me a duc fanboy? does that mean i call u a jap bike fan boy? sounds rather childish doesnt it? I think its rather ironic one says duc are slow not up to par to japanese bikes,... then when it comes to the SB championships and all other championship the duc team has ones the rules are in their favor only.
ur right man,... i guess that ducati winning the world title in motogp last year was a fluke of good luck then,... honda should won,.... haha yeah right
Usual duc fan they won one year and they're the best, before that what were they doing in moto gp, nothing they even had their best rider come from wsbk.
And don't bring up wsbk because they weasel themselves to bend the rules on racing race bikes against mild tunned street japanese bikes.
I have a 1098 and I've ridden a lot of bikes and own several jap liter bikes and I have to say, the 1098 is 5x more fun around the city, it just has gobbs of torque that a 4 cylinder cannot give you down low. It is also a challenge to ride because it is very twitchy and that makes it more fun. The jap bikes are simply boring to ride in comparison. Yes you can buy a Japanese 4 cylinder bike with more top end horsepower but it is not as fun. Maybe on the track only. Twins sound better too.
for the price, a duc sucks. Pay alot of money for something that under performs. The dry clutch is annoying too. Ducati! making mechanics out of riders since 1940's
Geewiz, the newer bike with the highest price tag outperforms the competition. Who would've figured on that? I'm lol at the Ducati fanboys griefing up the Honda, but there is a certain snobbery that a premium buy-in allows a body. Still, it doesnt surprise me that Ducy-phants are as spoiled as the maker they coat-tail. After all Ducati has whined its way into favorable superbike rules changes several times now on the threat of quitting the series...now thats l337...:)
duc fanboys? haha,.... because 18 yr olds with cbr's and gxrs badmouthing ducatis b/c they dont have the $ to buy them, and hav shit for experience on bike in the first place, is any worse than duc owners defending their bikes? haha maybe the reason why duc owners come on here and glorify their bikes is b/c majority of them are older males with exp. who have owned a # of bikes, and are tired of young punks talkin shit about a bike they no nothing about except the fact its 3x more than theirs.
The Honda SP2, as good a bike as it is, is abit old to compete with the 1098. However I agree its down to taste and riding style what feels rite, one bike may suit you but feel like a nag to someone else.
the ducati could destroy the hondas i have both and they never even compare an s or r model. the ducati just got out of the crate the guy said and wasn't set up well and he said its still 20 percent better everywhere. dont get me wrong i love honda and i have a cbr 1000rr but nothing compares to the ducati. i cant wait for my 1098 r to come. with ducati traction control it wont even be compared to at all.
Well i rode a 1098s with open termi's and that was very easy to ride. Dont listen to what your they tell you. Some people get on with a bike and some dont. Just look at stoner and the other guy in motogp. A mcn test rider done a track day with instruction and he knocked 3 seconds a lap off of his time. Most testers cant ride them properly so just test them and make your own mind up. Being comfortable with the machine is the main thing. The duc dont suit the riders style as i found it very easy.
its just the way it is buddy and the ducati is easier to ride than all of them. my friend has an rc51 and he rode my 1098s and he said he would give away his rc51 and buy one anytime so learn ur facts
the japanese bikes have 2 more cylinders. Kinda like a 6 cylinder racing an 8 in cars.....its always been either 200 more cc or 2 more cylinders. The Japanese just changed it all when their 750's were surprisingly gettting spanked. Read up on racing history first please....
You guys that say that they can't compare these bikes must have watched a different video 'cause in the video I saw they were quite effectively comparing bikes from 2007 to one from 2004 that hadn't been updated since 2002. What surprised me and apparently them is that the SP2 did very well other than being under powered. You guys must totally freak out when they compare an F1 car to a road car, WHat!? This Is crap! They can't do that!!
thats why the only v-twins left in japan (sport bike wise) is the SV (which I own) they (japan) decided to drop any vtwin development for their much favored "Inline 4"
The ducati of that year when collin won was a much faster bike but colin edwards just out rode him in the corners. You cant compete with desmo power. Races are mostly won in corners.
Riiiiiight the hondas have never compared to the ducs, even as the ducais are still being held to a standard honda set with the rc51 9YEARS AGO! The RC is 9 years old you crazy fool and your beloved 2005 or later 1098 is still being compared to it.
They're all nice bikes, but it's a shame they took the 1098. The Ducati 999 was built at the same time the SP2 was made. That should make the comparison SP2 vs. 999 a fair comparison, but instead they took a newer model with more CC's...

well figure the SP2 has no Ohlins suspensiion, and also no Aluminium wheels. Brakes do quite well consdering they are not radials.
the Ducatis are quite capable of being setup customized for each riders needs (within some reaonable parameters). Now if you want to put the HRC kit on the RC then the RC will be capable of besting the Ducati. With some small camchange and all the rest of the bits the 120HP RC becomes a 180HP SP2 and all the rest of the pieces are very much inline with the Duc.

Only one snag with a few mods to the 1098 aswell, its power can go through the roof. Its a bigger engine. The sp2 engine couldn't compete unless you bored it out. Its very simple, ride a bike, if ya dont like it,dont ride it. I love All bikes, but i would never talk shit about a bike i knew nothing about except for the price, which they are damn expensive lol.

There has to be a reason why all the jap manucf. left wsbk. Race what u bring don't bend the rules to be up to par. by the way I never said duc suck balls all I said is that all duc fans say there bike is the best. sorry the 1098 is the best and jap bikes have no character they're all the same.
mg16 3 years ago
...for ex you got a vtwin duc sitting next to a 4, and the duc will need a sizable jump in power to match the japanese bike's all out power, and if the rules get bent for the ducati team,(which they prolly are, no denying that)that puts the power ratio pretty much equal for both bikes as far as track use is concerned. If the jap bike then wins,..duc sux ballz,... but if the duc wins,.. its BS and they are cheating. and 99% of those ppl nvr have rode a duc,... all they know is they cant afford it.
brknemesis 3 years ago
i never said they were the best,...... it is you and others saying that they are the worst. ive owned a cbr for my first bike, r1, 93 900ss and 996, so how does defending outlandish claims make me a duc fanboy? does that mean i call u a jap bike fan boy? sounds rather childish doesnt it? I think its rather ironic one says duc are slow not up to par to japanese bikes,... then when it comes to the SB championships and all other championship the duc team has ones the rules are in their favor only.
brknemesis 3 years ago
ur right man,... i guess that ducati winning the world title in motogp last year was a fluke of good luck then,... honda should won,.... haha yeah right
brknemesis 3 years ago
Usual duc fan they won one year and they're the best, before that what were they doing in moto gp, nothing they even had their best rider come from wsbk.
And don't bring up wsbk because they weasel themselves to bend the rules on racing race bikes against mild tunned street japanese bikes.

Great the ducati is finally up to honda's 2002 bike. Duc fan boys must be very proud now. We sure see the posts on you tube how great the 1098 is.

Ducati is all marketing - buy a jap bike: save money and go faster.

having an extra 100cc on all other bikes is enough of an advantage already,
but i really dont like what ducati did with the 1098r - just give it ANOTHER 100cc instead of trying to make the bike faster by other terms
lobzdik 3 years ago
I have a 1098 and I've ridden a lot of bikes and own several jap liter bikes and I have to say, the 1098 is 5x more fun around the city, it just has gobbs of torque that a 4 cylinder cannot give you down low. It is also a challenge to ride because it is very twitchy and that makes it more fun. The jap bikes are simply boring to ride in comparison. Yes you can buy a Japanese 4 cylinder bike with more top end horsepower but it is not as fun. Maybe on the track only. Twins sound better too.
coteesh 3 years ago
for the price, a duc sucks. Pay alot of money for something that under performs. The dry clutch is annoying too. Ducati! making mechanics out of riders since 1940's
bvoytekb 3 years ago 3
Geewiz, the newer bike with the highest price tag outperforms the competition. Who would've figured on that? I'm lol at the Ducati fanboys griefing up the Honda, but there is a certain snobbery that a premium buy-in allows a body. Still, it doesnt surprise me that Ducy-phants are as spoiled as the maker they coat-tail. After all Ducati has whined its way into favorable superbike rules changes several times now on the threat of quitting the series...now thats l337...:)
mobdeadmeat 3 years ago
duc fanboys? haha,.... because 18 yr olds with cbr's and gxrs badmouthing ducatis b/c they dont have the $ to buy them, and hav shit for experience on bike in the first place, is any worse than duc owners defending their bikes? haha maybe the reason why duc owners come on here and glorify their bikes is b/c majority of them are older males with exp. who have owned a # of bikes, and are tired of young punks talkin shit about a bike they no nothing about except the fact its 3x more than theirs.

What a suprise, a bike needs to be set up for the rider. Who would have guessed that?

they tested a 1098..they should try 1098s or 1098r

There's no doubt these things can eat up our japanese literbikes - read up.

The Honda SP2, as good a bike as it is, is abit old to compete with the 1098. However I agree its down to taste and riding style what feels rite, one bike may suit you but feel like a nag to someone else.
Slickfish001 3 years ago
might i say the way this man speaks is quite irritating and obscure...

Drop it all.. just a comparasion if duc is up to date to Honda 2004 technology thats all.. appearently, its up to date to 2004 1/2 ?? ...
travisbrent 3 years ago
the honda beat the duc easily. I'm not surprised it's still a top bike. Easiest to ride is a Honda (Japanese motorcycles) trait through and through.
sqd8r 3 years ago
the ducati could destroy the hondas i have both and they never even compare an s or r model. the ducati just got out of the crate the guy said and wasn't set up well and he said its still 20 percent better everywhere. dont get me wrong i love honda and i have a cbr 1000rr but nothing compares to the ducati. i cant wait for my 1098 r to come. with ducati traction control it wont even be compared to at all.
TIANGEL1 3 years ago
Well i rode a 1098s with open termi's and that was very easy to ride. Dont listen to what your they tell you. Some people get on with a bike and some dont. Just look at stoner and the other guy in motogp. A mcn test rider done a track day with instruction and he knocked 3 seconds a lap off of his time. Most testers cant ride them properly so just test them and make your own mind up. Being comfortable with the machine is the main thing. The duc dont suit the riders style as i found it very easy.

ducati's are the easiest bike to ride u dumbass. even valentino rossi said that!

its just the way it is buddy and the ducati is easier to ride than all of them. my friend has an rc51 and he rode my 1098s and he said he would give away his rc51 and buy one anytime so learn ur facts

the japanese bikes have 2 more cylinders. Kinda like a 6 cylinder racing an 8 in cars.....its always been either 200 more cc or 2 more cylinders. The Japanese just changed it all when their 750's were surprisingly gettting spanked. Read up on racing history first please....

wrong comment on wrong video....lol It was a reply to the lambo vs. 1098 video. Among twins, the Duc has no equal. I still love my gixxer k though.

The RC-51(SP-2) hasn't been updated since 2002, how can they compare it to the new Ducati 1098......
gotchaf4i 4 years ago 4
as he said it's still for sale, still on the market, so yes, you can compare them!
matekk 4 years ago
The Hondas have never compared to the ducs
ValiRossi 4 years ago
thats why the only v-twins left in japan (sport bike wise) is the SV (which I own) they (japan) decided to drop any vtwin development for their much favored "Inline 4"
Ryknfjor 4 years ago
well the ones that won the wsb titles with edwards on board were obviously better than the ducatis
r7a5b0 4 years ago
ok...
thetttttttttttt 3 years ago
The ducati of that year when collin won was a much faster bike but colin edwards just out rode him in the corners. You cant compete with desmo power. Races are mostly won in corners.
benjyboba 3 years ago
Riiiiiight the hondas have never compared to the ducs, even as the ducais are still being held to a standard honda set with the rc51 9YEARS AGO! The RC is 9 years old you crazy fool and your beloved 2005 or later 1098 is still being compared to it.

hi hi. it gos me hard to undestand what the guy say. He is defetly a british.. speakin to fast, but i reachd out the most of the text.
The comparsion test is cheap. U can;t compare a bike from 2007 with an 2004 one. SO this article si crap.
