If you are trying to fight a case claiming that yours and your wife's life has been significantly altered by this accident you need evidence and the best evidence will be witness statments from people who knew you before and after. It's not confusing at all that the solicitor needs to speak to these people. It certainly doesn't reflect badly on the 'legal system'. Cases that end up in court rely on witness evidence, it's not surprising in the slgithest.
