  • Incredible! The Xalam is IDENTICAL to the ancient Egyptian lute! There certainly must have been some amazing cross-cultural exchange of musical ideas going on in Antiquity, How is the resonator constructed? Is there skin stretched over a Gourd?

  • @Klezfiddle1 you should check out " Youssou Ndour CD Egypt '

  • @Klezfiddle1 Actually, a few historians (Cheikh Anta Diop and others) think the Wolof came from Ancient Egypt originally

  • TINDIBIYA!!!!tHAT`S MY SHIZZLE!!!i AM SO STUNNED BY W.AFRICAN MUSIC

    RIGHT NOW YO!!!iT`S SO BEAUTIFUL

    TO ME.

  • Beautiful! I'm very intrigued by the tuning that's being used starting at the 6:00 minute mark (or close to there).

  • The opening song sounds like it's from Mansour Seck, who is a close friend of Baaba Maal's. They have been singing together for a very long time. (From a proud Senegalese!)

  • I know, I think it is Mansour Seck. My parents would know. I don't really listen to his music as much as they do, but he is a great artist.

  • First place with most diverse ethnics where every ethnic shines in culture is Gambia.

Then go to Senegal from there.

  • Gambia doesn't have the most diversity in West Africa, Nigeria does.

  • That was not Bama Maal. Take a trip to West Africa to be able to differentiate and get a wider listening, then you can tell.

  • I was talking about the song from the beginning of the video. I am from West Africa.

  • Who sang this song, it sounds like Baaba Maal. It definately is in Puular.

  • It's all the same thing.

  • his style reminds me sometimes of moorish style of playing, especially the second riff

  • The original moors are West African.

  • Truth Speaks! The army of the Moors was primarily Fula, Hausa, and others from Senegambia; as the Murabit (Moor) movement was strong amongst them.

Madam Bugibba was a noble woman who witnessed the Moorish invasion and described them thus "...their forces (the Moors) were as black as ink, and their general (Zayd ibn Tariq) was blacker still."

  • Yep take a look at some of the videos I uploaded.
