Welsh (along with Cornish and Breton) is what remains of the celtic language that was once spoken across Wales, England and southern Scotland. In the hundred years or so after the Romans left Britain the English showed up from Germany and Scandinavia with their Germanic English language. They eventually conquered all of England and destroyed the celtic language and culture. They never quite managed to destroy it in Wales though, even though they conquered us a long time ago.
