  • Religion seeks to control life with guilt. Religious beliefs are largely based on faith rather than reason.

  • yeah, alcohol is a dirty drug.

  • This is very funny because atheists have the most drunks

  • Theism is it a Drug or Virus or both?

  • Great question! I hope that you wanted a good answer, because the poor one is "yes". As a tribalizing construct, the ideas packaged as theism mimic biological parasites, with similar characteristics to a virus. The drug aspect of theistic addiction, though complex, is biological not allegorical. FMTLE is a genetic oddity that all primates may carry, to differing degrees of influence.

  • Its origins as a facet of humanoid evolutionary development, are probably intertwined with our addictions to sensuality and orgasm. The research is young, so some of the findings are still thin on proofs. Rarely diagnosed, familial mesial temporal lobe epilepsy is activated as a syndrome, during one or more epileptic seizures that have induced a hallucination.

  • Similar to the perceptual reactions to a stroke or an externally provided hallucinogenic, the brain reacts to the absence of function from a temporarily "missing" & certainly discordant part of the brain in many different ways. One of which is to perceive the immediate environment as a "spiritual" event.

Rituals are designed to induce this.

  • The "drug" addiction is to the memory recall of the event. As overwhelming feelings of peace, stillness, and awe are common during this not always outwardly apparent brain trauma, there is a strong desire to revisit the experience in memory. The self supplied chemical cocktail resulting in euphoria, becomes an addiction that can be induced by any action that recalls the pleasant memory.

  • The other side of this coin is called post traumatic stress disorder. In PT-SD, the same medical condition arose during a negative experience, thus the classic shell shock of so many fearful flavors, is what visits the person upon any reminder of the feared event. As there is little to no desire to revisit ones personal hell, addictions to the recall are very rare, and in fact, partitions are created to attempt to forget the memory forever if possible.

  • The obvious exceptions to this are when the fears of the mythical hell are also ritually induced during a seizure, to be perceived of as real. This completes the meme parasite's hold on a person, as "virally" communicative, with the bribery of a personal heaven, and the extortion of a personal hell.

  • We have domesticated ourselves into the mind prisons of such commonly held delusions, by our breeding susceptibility to FMTLE activated as a syndrome into our genetic stock, and immunity to its grasp, out.

  • wow... maybe i'll take a vacation and start reading all of your comments.

without reading them or knowing what they consist of, or what side you're on, i strongly encourage you take them, organize them, and make them into a video and post it as a response to mine. (just a suggestion)

  • High praise indeed. Thank you!

It is the plan to do exactly that, when I am able. I online file and subject title nearly everything that I write that could be useful for scripting. I also have playlists to deal with subjects when I can.

With the video comments on YT going down the SNAFU toilet, it becomes more urgent to get my faulty OS repaired, and get on with being an authentic youtuber, and not just a youtyper.

Alas, money is an issue. I will do though.

  • i'm only saying this because you have a lot of them and it'd be worth placing them all in one source rather than many comments spread over mutiple comment pages

  • it can be compared to both for different reasons

  • Addiction swap, yep, you've got it.

  • But what about the born-again fundamentalist Christian who is also addicted to booze?

  • They come under the "not a REAL Christian" classification.

Whenever a follower of a religion does something bad they are automatically "not a REAL" follower of that religion - this is a very convenient way of disassociating your religion from bad publicity.

I'm surprised it's not written in the Torah, Bible, Quran :-)

  • Xenophobia is encouraged throughout all of the Abrahamic texts. Most REAL followers of Abrahamic faiths end up getting arrested in the USA, because much of the crazy crap in the scriptures is illegal. That's why the prison industry is the largest per capita in the world. And where can you go to learn more about the way of god, and get out early for such "good behavior"? Prisons.

  • with this in mind ("not a real christian"), i always remind people that if they are not killing in god's name (as per deuteronomy ch 13, and others), they are not real christians

(not that i want them to start killing)

  • That is a good question, that cannot be answered easily.

One idea is that all addictions boil down to an absence of satisfaction in the persons sex life. It's way more complicated than that, but the core of the idea may be sound.

  • It sure may be. I'm a strong proponent of examining the sexual component of almost any animal action. I know a lot of people say the number 1 component in our motives is "fear". But I ask, why is it that we are programmed to be afraid? Is it to save our asses so that we can reproduce? I don't know the answer. I only have the question!

  • AA, Please come see the reply I wrote below, before it vanishes. If you're too late, I have it filed and can send you a copy.

  • why dont you have thumbs up and down, i love thumbing comments

  • because i don't want anyone on either side of the argument making comments disappear. if youtube allowed comments to stay no matter what the rating, i wouldn't have a problem with it.

    (i am truly very sorry)

  • lol, thats cool man, dont apologise to me, you can still read the comments you just have to click on it,

  • Very well said, deserves to be mirrored by FFreethinker.

  • I'd take the Alcohol any day.

  • dammit!

i left out a witty remark to the effect of: "at least alcohol has flavor we can feel and enjoy"... didn't think of it

  • well said

  • Right on.

  • Nice pear blooms. Reminds me of the main drag in my town in spring.

  • i took them last spring while we were fishing.

is that what they're called, pear blooms?

  • Blooms, blossoms, there's no real rule. They're one of my favorite trees, if they bear fruit. Bradfords are okay, but I like a nice, sweet, juicy pear from time to time.

  • You know, I think faith isn't bad if it's applied responsibly and reason is used when dealing with practical applications.

  • this seems to be a good statement, but faith is completely useless. reason is the only thing that works. you can't have faith and reason together

  • That statement is somewhat vague and ambiguous. Can you give examples of what you mean?

  • me, or JonClem?

  • JonClem..ok, this is weird...what happened to all the other comments?

  • they've been disappearing and reappearing. if you look at "you can't prove anything", you'll see a couple of comments have been re entered because they had disappeared and some are doubled just because that's how they came back when they disappeared

  • very nicely put.....I need a drink now.:()

  • i don't believe in god but i do believe i'll have another beer ;D

  • solve problems responsibly

  • i agree, was trying to be funny ;)

  • so was i

  • faith=alcohol interesting title ;)
