  • wait... these are reusable!!!

  • I always knew Carmack was a genius... and wow, he's done a great job with his team!

  • stupid question, but theres a lot of correctional gimballing going on, is that due to the centre of gravity shifting with the fuel moving about or torque movement from fuel pumps?

  • @gordongate

U ever balance a stick on end on your finger? would it stand on end without your finger moving to keep it balanced?

  • @nost78 exact balance occurs if the finger was motionless, the stick's COG was tangentially centred to the pull of gravity along its length and there was no atmospheric movement.

There was a lot of adjusting going on, i wondered what the main cause was so i assumed centre of gravity, if that was the case, the thrust must be off centre to the COG to cause a lot of counter movement. so i wanted to know if the fuel sloshing about in an un baffled tank was the cause.

  • @gordongate Fair point about the un-baffled tanks... not sure what you mean by "tangentially centred COG". but the lay way I see it is simply, if the arse is trying to overtake the nose then the slightest movement off centre (due to un-baffled fuel or atmospheric instability (high/low pressure fluctuations from hot gasses etc.) will cause a shift in COG and require correction. It is the dance of balance against gravity. Tangents, vectors, Newton, and Euclid, can explain it far better than I.

  • @gordongate No fuel pumps. The propellants are probably sloshing, though.

  • cumulus clouds at 1:26 look perfect for flying a glider :-)

  • We just wanna see John Carmack building another great Quake Engine based on Moon data he gathered with this baby!

  • There is a van Huyten in the house! Several, in fact! And they're not vast networks of hush-hush, which probably helps in the long run! :D

  • im a homeschool mama..retired. we did the first and best things with the kids. we are headed for the shuttle launch in april. yall keep up the good work. waves~~~

  • to bad that useless turd nation Denmark could never come up with anything like this

  • What's the max altitude you've gone to with your rockets?

  • I live 3/4 of a mile from the municipal airport where these guys practice. They have got to be the most annoying group of people I have ever seen. They perform their tests evenings and weekends, making it impossible to carry on a conversation in your own yard, they spook animals, they ruin any weekend with good weather by taking away the opportunity to enjoy quiet peaceful country living that the local residents moved out here to enjoy!!

  • @icewater75074 Aw diddums.

  • @icewater75074 The noise is unfortunate; we try not to do any tests we don't need. Evening testing has been dialed back a lot in the last year compared to before, but Saturday is just another work day for us.

I know it's the tests that stick out, but there are often months of quiet between test series.

  • HA! If God exists, she would have destroyed you by now!

  • Nice, but vertical landing/liftoff is a waste of fuel. Just remember that you have to carry the landing fuel... I can't understand why these guys are wasting so much money on this.

  • @Migus29 What, if they ever get a contract to land a payload on the moon, are they going to pop open a parachute or glide down? Obviously, neither one of these options is viable in that environment. Thus, the technology armadillo is developing is not a waste, it's just not practical when speaking of endeavors on our planet. Armadillo is an extremely efficient operation when compared to government organizations, and they are developing reliable vehicles with future goals in mind.

  • Oh armadilloaerospace, I summon thee! Please show us your grand generousity and delete this stupid, three page arguement over whether God exists!

  • @jag9998 I'm not going to go through and delete the whole thing, but I blocked DreaminofFL360 which should cut down on it in the future. -ben

  • great! cant wait to see more from all of you!

  • The company may be called "Armadillo Aerospace" now, but it's only a matter of time before it becomes the "Union Aerospace Corporation"!

  • Travelling to space will not solve all our problems but it will allow to get an even greater perspective on our place in the universe that God created. We should continue the pursuit of manned and unmanned space travel while developing those positive technologies that will benefit all

  • @navalink "All our problems" you say...well the biggest problem humanity got is actually God. its extremely funny seeing religious people commenting on science because at the core of your religious beliefs is a denial of science and its discoveries. If it were up to you people the earth would still be flat and the center of the Universe. Which we know for a fact that God did not create. There is no need for a God, and your religious fantasies about God is actually the cause of our problems.

  • @mYOzZyKaT Really? What commonly known "fact" are you speaking of? Sounds like subjective rhetoric, but I could be wrong. Please educate me of your elusive and profound wisdom. I am dying to know how you came up with this theory. You must have some kind of secret wisdom, you know, the kind that only needs to be proclaimed without any substantial evidence to back it up ;)

  • @DreaminofFL360 If you are not aware of the scientific facts that very conclusive prove that God did not create the earth or the Universe as described in the Bible and that every statement about the origin of life couldnt be more wrong...and such scientific facts as evolution and the decoding of human and animal genome that clearly disproves everything about the creation myth.

  • @mYOzZyKaT So when did evolution prove that a protecell became a eukaryotic cell? I was aware that evolutionary theory is based on natural selection which only explains the survival of the fittest, not how the fittest got there. All these so called "facts" of genome are in reality subjective. My opinion is that scientists are afraid of loosing their precious theory and years of research. So tell me, since you seem to know and be certain, what does the Bible say? Please teach me.

  • @DreaminofFL360 The Bible is one giant lie from start to finish. If you believe anything the Bible says you are be definition a moron. Whats next, you tell us you believe in pixies and Santa Claus and you have been abducted by aliens? People who hear voices in their head instructing them to kill others and actually acting on that are normally put directly into a mental institution. But in the Bible they are known as wise men.

Do you actually believe anything in the Bible?

  • @mYOzZyKaT Yes, I do believe in the Bible, the part where it says in Psalm 14:1 "The fool says in his heart, there is no God." (Psalm 14:1) At least I state my sources. BTW, I was top of my class and still am, including biology class, but that won't matter to someone like you. Your quickly offended, I see, but your impulsive reactions are only subjective rhetoric. Obviously you have never studied the Bible, please don't be ignorant about something you do not understand-you have failed yourself

  • @DreaminofFL360 Why do moronic Christian apologist always use the "you have nver studied the Bible" argument as if that had any kind of validation or merit.

Yes I have read your fucking Bible...twice... and had 5 years of mandatory Christianity education in school. So you actually believe that quoting the Bible somehow makes it real and true and not just lies that morons swallow whole. Thats like quoting Harry Potter books and believing that true as well. You are a moron!

  • @DreaminofFL360 Actually its biology as a scientific field of knowledge that proves the individual steps in evolution - not the theory of evolution it self. So your notion of evolution proving anything clearly shows how ignorant you are and how much your education in America have failed you. What we know from evolution is that the creation myth couldnt be more wrong and it in no way represent the true evolution of life on earth.

Your Bible fails at every point, every time with any facts.

  • @DreaminofFL360 You have simply been brainwashed... If you do not realize that Harry Potter and the Bible contain exactly the same amount of truth and facts then you are even dumber than I thought.

  • @DreaminofFL360 LOL...Bible written by people who were more educated than people today...LOL... you really are a complete asshat..

No wonder America is in such trouble if you represent "the top of your class".. how dumb have the rest of them have to be before you represent the smartest part of anything...LOL

  • @mYOzZyKaT No silly person, not today, for the era back then. And I was speaking about a historical document versus a fantasy book :) Wow, you are more dumb than I thought. There's simply no hope for you. Prove to me that there exists no God and we can go get a beer and talk about it!

  • @DreaminofFL360 Historical document..LOL... hey theres a talking burning bush in here and a story of a man with magical powers that parts the see... Is that fantasy or a historical document?..LOL..

and with your low standard of evidence then just the mere statement that God do not exist is proof enough.

  • @mYOzZyKaT Did the egg come first or the chicken? Where from does the god of science say we came to be? For what purpose…wait there is none. Since there is no purpose, does there exist a good and evil? Are you a follower of Friedrich Nietzsche’s doctrine? When scientist build amino acid chains in a lab, do they ignore the fact that THEY are CREATING an experimental environment for such reactions to occur?

  • @DreaminofFL360 Its no wonder Americans and especially you are so religious. Its a scientific fact that the less intelligent people are the more religious they become. Its a scientific fact that the lower the IQ the more likely it is you are religious.

In a country where you can elect George Bush as a two term president its clear you dismiss science and cling to your religion and guns.

And I do not need a God to have meaning in my life, I am intelligent enough to realize that.

  • @mYOzZyKaT Also, the more college education you get, the more likely you are to believe in ghosts. It's not a great metric for intelligence, but then neither is IQ.

  • @mYOzZyKaT Not every American is religious. I am not. Unfortunately, to my dismay, the decisions and beliefs of those who are often bewilder me. There has been significant divestment in public education in the US. When you couple that with the media assaulted world we live in, and the borderline propaganda mass-media most consume, you don't have a recipe for well-informed decision making. That said, you're generalizing a bit. Cool it.

  • At 7:32...Teehee. This is why you clear your landing zone thoroughly.

But seriously, Armadillo is extremely impressive and I'm very excited by this technology ^_^

  • "Progress" has trashed a perfectly good planet. I hope humans never go back to the Moon or travel to Mars, may they remain unchanged and untarnished by humans.

And yes, I realize I am on a "high tech" computer system........but I'd rather not be, it's just the world I was born into.

  • @NoLongerFooled Someday, life will die out in the universe, and then it will be the beautiful, untarnished wilderness you want it to be.

  • @aronchai Well, I fully understand that humans are the consciousness of the universe, and that's a wonderful thing, but I feel that many of us have not been very wise stewards of what was given to us.

  • Odenkay, you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • You'll need some form of landing gear and free flight if you want to get your rocket down each time. It's a super high waste of fuel like this.

  • Great job John and team, epic landing @ 7:30, no wonder Rage doesnt release till next year :)

  • @psyph3rchetan Rage doesn't release until next year, because the PS3/360 version are broken and the 360 live demo crashed at QuakeCon. I'll be getting the game on PC, but the damn console versions caused it to get delayed. Carmack should be fixing Rage instead of playing with rockets.

  • @Gamer4Life8910 thats what i meant, getting Rage on anything else apart from a PC is plain stupidity :)

  • Fantastic. Going to keep my eye on this.

  • Amazing progress. Good luck and godspeed!
