@JackieMichaels1994 and the points and the lock movements. He learned from these guys as well as the Electric Boogaloo, Jeffrey Daniel, and Poppin Taco, he learned moonwalking and waving from those guys.
What a lot of people don't know is that Michael Jackson got the names of the dance moves mixed up. The dance where you walk and move backwards is called the backslide (not the moonwalk). The moonwalk is another dance where you walk and lift up from the ground as if you were walking on the moon where the gravitational pull is less than earth.
@Stefan990 I know that it's called the backslide, from the Electric Boogaloo by Boogaloo Sam and Poppin Pete. A moonwalk is a type of float move to give the impression of floating as if floating on the moon. I practice popping, locking, and robot.
The real name of the dance is called Campbellocking. Invented by Don "Campbellock" Campbell of the famous group "Don Campbell and the Campbellock Dancers".
@Stefan990 The reason why I said moonwalking is because the person I replied to may have no idea what a backslide is. I personally don't think MJ mixed up popping and locking. He likely combined both to create his own dancing style. IMO, he knew the difference, in his "Jam" song music video, there are scenes in which he's just popping in one and just locking in the other. There's also a Jackson 5 video where it shows 4 of the brothers and one older white guy and they're all locking.
In my previous comment I said "that Michael Jackson got the names of the dance moves mixed up." The dance move that is called the backslide, he called the moonwalk. I didn't say Michael Jackson got the name of the dance itself mixed up.
@Ash2theB Yes that's Toni Basil, the lockers were formed by Don Campbell & Toni Basil, and she served as the locker's manager as well as being a dancer.
What a lot of people don't know is that the name of the group is "Don Campbell and the Campbellock Dancers." Members of the group didn't like the name and didn't want to give credit to Don Campbell (originator of the dance). So they started saying the name of the group is called "The Lockers." When you look at video when the group started they would say "introducing Don Campbell and the Campbellock Dancers."
And the name of the dance is really called "Campbellocking."
@Stefan990 Of course I know Don 'Campbellock' Campbell! I've been to a locking class. I thought a lot of people knew that he created 'Campbellocking'..
I mean that you must know Don "Campbellock" Campbell, as in you meat him and spoke to him. Was Don "Campbellock" Campbell the teacher of your class in Campbellocking?
@Stefan990 Oh right, I've not met him actually, the guy who took the class I went to is Jerry Tse, a street dancer /choreographer/teacher who is the founder & director of Sunshine Studios Manchester.
Yes, the name for the dance element of hip-hop is b. boying. Where the b stands for break. The element was named b. boying by the father of hip-hop himself, Kool Herc.
I dont think so. The Broadway production was 1975. lockers didn't split till late 70's. not to mention i don't know why else they would make this song. haha
Um Ever heard of Um...MOTOWN!!!!! How about the Rock and roll era which was started by black artist like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Ritchie etc... Not Elvis.
fawn performed with lockers before this group. They didn't really make it big till their manager Toni joined the act. i dont know if there is even footage anymore with Fawn in the group.
i dunno there are alot of lockers nowadays that keep the funk in their dancing, plock and jimmysoul and the gogo brothers are ones i know that everyone would probably know, but if people only locked like the lockers it would not be their own style and thats not what locking is about
PPlz NeeD 2 Jus WatCH Old SchOOl locking... PPlz nowadays dont lock with that funk... i see pplz lockin but they lockin like they went 2 school for it(technical locking) niggas from baq then lock with the loose-ness and all.... pure funk.. shabba doo is a funk locker... jus go and look him up..

Agree with you 100% GLC,'da funk'is conspicuous by its absence in so many of todays so-called 'Lockers'.Part of the problem is too many of the current generation are about on stage'performance'& ego-fuelled 'battling',rather than just simply dancing for the fun of it.The best dancing I believe evolves not in the antiseptic confines of the dance studio, but in the vibrant social milieu of the club, street or school playground where spontaniety & improvisation is more likely to naturally flourish.

Tony at her funky best here, I was a fan of hers in those days so it's nice to see all these videos.
I remember the Swan Lake one from SNL, but it was hard to imitate them without being able to watch it over and over, like the Koreans are doing now because of youtube, and basically just copying it all with a modern twist, but not enough to call it original ghetto lockin'.
he is some how credited as being an original lockers because Don started the group in early 73'...this is true...though locking has begun around 69'/70'...Shabba Doo was the last to be introduced into the original locking circuit by the Go Go Brothers in late 1973 while the others were in early 73'...but he is credited as being an ORIGINAL LOCKER...the CORE group who were consistant from 73'-the end of the 70's...
