It's a HORROR MOVIE people watch horror films to be scared. Although I do agree about the religious lady things. But, really, can you blame them? She is sort of the villain going to extreme lengths because she believes that the whole ordeal was caused by god, at one point actually sacrificing someone to the mantis like creature, then attempting to sacrifice the main character's son.

An interesting thing about this movie is, despite the horrific nature of the creatures, the filmmaker never overlooks the fact they're just "animals" (well, sort of), and not evil or bloodthirsty "monsters". Not even the humans are "evil", but vulnerable and fragile beings driven to insanity by fear and horror. Lovecraft would have loved it. A truly "horror" movie and a superb example of well crafted storytelling.

@Riku2099 Basically, there was an army research base near the town that was experimenting with technology to make portals to other worlds. They finally succeeded, but the experiment went awry and all kinds of monsters from another dimension poured through the portal and into the surrounding region. The movie's plot deals with a group of people caught in the town by this 'invasion,' and how they escape/survive.
