I remember that a little green old man once said "Fear is the path to the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate...leads to suffering" Young Anakin Skywalker had fear for losing her mother, then he felt anger when he lost her and he hated the Jedi and Padme due to the seduccion of Palpatine. Which led him to a path of suffer and misery. A tragedy of a fallen Jedi. But in the end, the profecy was right.

The point of the second trilogy (1,2,3) was to explain the TRAGEDY OF DARTH VADER (george lucas himself said that if you don't believe me). Without the love story, you wouldn't have the tragedy or ANY REASON to even make 1, 2, and 3. LOL
