I still remember that Christmas. Playing this game called "Trump" (this boardgame associated with Donal Trump) with my grandmother. The Vikings game was on. And it was announced Billy was dead. I'd met the guy at the winter meetings the past year. Gave me an autograph. I was a kid. He was nice to me.

My grandmother and I played the rest of the game in silence. It was a sad day for me.

I have a great story from just outside Yankee stadium in July 1978.A little kid was crying and wanted Reggie's autograph. Reggie ignored the kid and went into the locker room. The kid kept crying and about 10 seconds later Billy came to talk with the kid..a minute later he brought the kid inside the locker room/stadium and about 10 minutes later that kid came back out with an amazing smile and a bat and he did get Reggie's (and other player's) autographs. What a nice thing to do by Billy Martin.

Being from Boston and loving the Red Sox I have a great story to tell. Back when the Yankees trained in Ft. Luaderdale my Dad took me to see a game and all the kids were waiting for autographs. As Mr. martin walked by everyone yelled, "Billy!" I Yelled, Mr Martin!" He turned and saw me dressed in Red Sox shirt and t and said, "I'll sign yours first after the game." After the game he was true to his word. He came out, looked around, saw me in the back and said, "I said you'd be first."

Probably one of the biggest days in sports history was the one game playoff in 1978. I doubt any one game in baseball will ever have that kind of excitement again.
