Perhaps you didn't realise that the origins of Humanism were actually religious ones? Did you? Or perhaps your just too ignorant to realise such 'complexity.'
What? Yes, I do realise that humanism has religious ancestry. But I am not a religious humanist, I am a secular humanist. So your point is what exactly?
Don't insult me so randomly, either. Why do you call me ignorant? And why did you use the word "complexity" in the context that you did, and why did you put inverted commas round it? What was the point?
"I am bot defined by what I am not.. I am defined for what I am". Dude, that was touching. That was very well stated. It's exactly how I often feel about this whole Christian thing - that somehow we are just numbers to get pulled to the "other side" rather than being recognised as an individual with our own opinions and views. Well done man!!
I understand but atheism is a belief. I'm proud of my atheism. One day, hopefully there will be no need to identify as an atheist. I don't see now as a time.
In the days of Martin Luther King, was it necessary to identify as a "non-racist" to combat racism?
If you haven't already, I suggest reading Sam Harris' recent speech at the Atheist Alliance conference called "The Problem with Atheism". It can be found on RichardDawkins(dot)net.
Precisely. They defined themselves by what they believed - in the abolition of slavery and the de-segregation of the races respectively - but not by what they didn't believe.
Militant atheist and evangelical atheist are bullshit phrases made up by idiots. I see nothing wrong with being antireligious, since religious groups affect our lives.
There is a slight difference between anti-theist and anti-religious. I think these terms should used be more often by the person who is against theism or religion.
nice description dude

I'm just curious
as a humanist do you believe in the existence of a soul?
d983394 4 years ago
As a secular humanist, no. There are assumedly religious humanists who do.
TCPHumanist 4 years ago
can there be religious humanists.
I thought the idea of humanism was to do good things with no expectation of reward in the afterlife

I like the label atheist. I think it has a nice ring to it. Plus it is more in your face than other labels, so I like it :P

Aren't we really long stacked shelves with countless labeled boxes, such as atheist just sitting on one of our ample shelves?

I think it's too less of an insult to call the Bible and the Koran historical fiction. It's more along the lines of insipid mythology.

Actually yes.
I have read sam harris speech. I disagree with him. I'm going to send you a video link.

"Actually yes."
Where would I see evidence of that?
TCPHumanist 4 years ago
Non-racists called themselves abolitionists and desegregationists.
xJediHowieX 4 years ago
Precisely. They defined themselves by what they believed - in the abolition of slavery and the de-segregation of the races respectively - but not by what they didn't believe.
Likewise should it be with atheism.
TCPHumanist 4 years ago
They did have a belief. They believed racism was BS. An atheist believes theism is bs.
xJediHowieX 4 years ago
I think you just need to qualify what kind of atheist you are. An anti-theist, militant atheist, evangelical atheist apatheist :D
I do see the problem of atheists varying towards their attitude towards religion. Some of us respect religion some of us don't.

hehe :D I just use anti-theist. The point is that some atheists are anti-theists and some actually like religion and some don't care.
