An interesting note is that the majority of black Zimbabweans didn't support Robert Mugabe's seizure of commercial farms, or his inflationary policies. This is an example of what happens when a currency is under the arbitrary control of the state. Incidentally, the same lesson can be drawn from the experience of Germany after World War I, where I can assure you the vast majority of the population is white.

Interesting video. I don't understand why these people don't seek employment that pays in gold. For example, the woman selling grain for gold could easily pay a fieldhand in gold. There's no need to start panning rivers, unless that's easier than doing something else.

These people can work for gold, just like working for US dollars or Euros. Also, you don't need a lot of gold. These people are talking in 10ths of a gram. The world used gold/silver as the main currency for centuries - supply isn't an issue.

no, they cant work for gold. the community does not have enough gold to go around, why do you think they are panning for it? im sure if they could work less hours somewhere else for the same amount of gold then they would. do you think gold/silver coins still float around as valid currency? no its been melted down ages ago and replaced with fiat currency. theres only two places you can get gold, bullion dealers or pan for it. they pan for it because they do not have gold.

i mean think about it, if the united states (i assume you live there) were to lose its currency to inflation just like zimbabwe, where do you think WE would get gold from to use as a currency? thats right, nowhere. and without a paper currency we'll be doing the exact same things as these people in zimbabwe.

I do live in the US. Don't underestimate the market. Whenever a better product appears people are quick to adopt it; assuming government doesn't try to stop them. In all likelihood, if hyperinflation occurs in the US people will quickly convert every US dollar to another fiat currency or private market money (usually precious metals). Even if both aren't available, they'll convert it to whatever is available and not perishable (e.g. vodka during Soviet Union's collapse).

The sad and screwed up thing is on an internal level I find myself thinking " it can happen just please dont let it happen in my time what quick fix can we find so my generation and perhaps my grand kids can survive it" and intellectually i know that this kind of think is what has caused the problem.
