I am a keyboardist that wants to buy an ewi, but not being a horn player, I imagine there is a pitch controller program, like Auto-Tune, or device that can filter out my 'wrong' notes and just let the right ones out. Like if i'm playing in Cm, and I play an 'e', it will come out as an e flat(assuming I program it to play in Cm). maybe the ewi can already do this? any help?
@tubejay27 if you need software to correct you mistakes you are not following the right way . learn from your mistakes and you'll eventually have ssomething you can be proud of. but first forget autotune etc.
OUTSTANDING. How am I ever supposed to get my work done with this AMAZING music going on in the background. (YouTube was several windows deep). Trust Michael to keep leaping into the foreground every few seconds. What an unbelievable master musician he was. God, how I miss hearing each new thing that he played. :(
I was just thinking that today today myself. I followed his music fervently for about the last ten years of his life, buying each new album as soon as it was released and always being amazed at his evolution and refinement. I miss that so much. He really left such a musical legacy though we can listen for a long, long time and never get tired of it!
Absolutely Mobius, I agree entirely. I have listened to many of his albums hundreds of times, (Corea's "Three Quartets" in particular). I find Brecker astonishing and superb every time I hear him. It never loses it's magic. There are other fine musicians for sure, but Brecker stands out so clearly. What a legacy!
Michael Brecker really helped lead the way for both modern saxophone playing and the EWI. I regret never getting the privilege to see him play live. R.I.P. Michael
Amazing! I've been playing the EWI for about 2 years, and this vid just gives me chills every time I hear it. There will never be another Michael Brecker. This is what jazz is all about; passion. Kenny G should watch some of these videos, and see what a true talented jazz musician is! By the way, does anyone know where to find the rest of this video?
can this be played with earphones that only you can hear it, or put volume down, so it can be practised at evening in apartments, without disturbing neigbours?
i would really want to play saxophone alto or tenor (dont know diference), but i would like to learn something before going practise realone with other people.
The AKAI EWI USB is purely a midi controller so it needs to be attached something that will produce the sounds ie a computer running software like MainStage or Logic Pro. You can use it to control a hardware synth as well but then you will also need an amp.
The (considerably) more expensive AKAI EWI4000 effectively contains a synth so if you have one of those you don't need a synth or computer but you still need an amp.
The EWI4000 has a headphone output, so you can play right away just for yourself, only you and your EWI ;) no amp needed if you use the internal synth of course.
However, it's worth pointing out that learning to play an EWI will not mean you can play the sax. The EWI is easier to play than a physical instrument so even if you could play the EWI well, that does not mean you can play the sax.
If you want to learn to plan an EWI go ahead. You will be very excited by what they can do, but if you want to play the sax, you need a sax (and very tolerant neighbours or somewhere to practise).
@lotus49a i think i go for sax, but i worry about if i can have any enjoyment with it at start, can i make any decent sound, will i be even able to get sound, how frustrating is, examble drums i can have fun with them even at the beginning when i cannot play, how is it at the beginning and i wish to be self taught, with teaching vids from here tube, and just trying things, i just dont wanto go music classes to learn how to play, that kills the enjoyment for me.
I play the flute not the sax, but friends of mine do and I have played with theirs and found I could play them even if I couldn't do it well. It was fun.
Playing any instrument very well is very hard, but the sax is not that hard to play that you should be put off.
Charlie Parker effectively taught himself and it didn't stop him from being one of the greatest jazz legends of all time.
PS I was wrong about needing an amp for the EWI4000s, it has a headphone socket.
@lotus49a The sax is not that hard to play? Every instrument, now matter how simple it may "seem", is a huge difficulty to master. Each and every one of them has its unique capabilities, and also its difficulties. You cannot objectively say that one instrument is easier to play than another.
I agree and I think you may have misread or misunderstood my comment. What I said was that the sax is not so hard to play that someone should be put off trying to learn. I didn't say it was easy and I don't believe that it is.
As I also said, learning to play any instrument very well is very hard and one only has to listen to Charlie Parker (for example) immediately to realise that no-one plays an instrument that well without a tremendous amount of time, effort and dedication.
just got a 4000... its incredible what they can do out of the box. i havent even started toying with the midi potential, but it can do whatever a player wants it to. amazing instrument. and its great how easy it is to play it, especially if already play sax or clarinet
@eyeheartchrist - by assigning samples to a certain key or key combination. So, for example, you wouldn't want it to activate when playing a "G" (the common way). But let's say you were to lift your index finger off the "B" and leave your middle and ring fingers of your left hand on the notes, you could assign that as a cue for the sample to begin.
interesting. So I would do that through just the EWI itself, or if I'm using a synth module? I think I understand what you mean because I read that assigning certain notes for certain samples, but that's as far as I've learned about it, not yet trying it, but now that you mention it. :-)
anyone know what kinda equipment hes using? i know its an akai ewi, but what kinda looping station is he using and where is he getting those sounds from =D ther so damn amazing. mainly the guitarish one at the end

alphabeets you might be right, but what algorithm(s) does it use??
I cannot find much info on the vl70.
What i do know is that when i was playing with my teachers vl70m for a while i could not see any programmable real physical parameters. My idea of physical modelling is adjustable/implementation of physical characteristics, such as different materials of the instruments and yamaha was is done i believe is 'fixed' physical modelling.i agree with you.
The Yamaha VL series is 100% physical modeling, no wavetable. It was a decision by Yamaha to limit the amount of detailed programming you can do with the unit, so there was a secondary Mac based program that let you completely alter the physical design of the instrument (bell shape, horn length, etc. These edits could be saved to five user slots. There was concern that the detailed programmed allowed you to render a patch useless! However, the original VL1 allowed access to all there parameters.
Indeed he used Guardalas but in the early 80s he was using DUKOFFs.
I find it amusing how well he uses the 'double patches' , i.e bass clarinet -flute mapping the register of the EWI, it is interesting, specially since there are at least 2 octaves where both sounds match.
Just so you know guys i play EWIs and my Digital Lecturers plays Steiner EVis through a VL70m and apparently the VL70m uses wavetable synthesis as suppose to physical modelling, i.e NO PHYSICAL MODELLING processing whatsoever (i might be wrong), it is not based on physical modelling algorithms.
I believe that back in the day he used a modded link, but from the 90's through the 2000's he played a custom Guardala. Though on that ballad record, it sounded like he was playing a hard rubber of some sort.
In other news: this video is totally ridiculous. WTF, Michael. Rest in peace, you crazy genius. I can't believe you're gone.
Sort of, but it can produce many different types of sounds. You can buy different pedal boards that give you a multitude of instrumentation. Every once in a while, they show Brecker's pedal board
Mannnnn....I've followed & been influenced by Mike Brecker since the Brecker Bros albums from the 70s...and everytime I find something I haven't seen before like this it never ceases to knock me off my chair....here is yet another example of his genius...miss yah Michael...
had the lucky fortune of seeing this man in DC before he left this place. Saw him with Herbie Hancock! He started jamming out on his EWI and messed up halfway through. Was like, "Damn, I was actually liking that one".
Based on what? Please tell me more about this. I see no reason why learning to play a wind controllable synth would mess up your sax. Unless you seize playing sax of course... In my mind Michael will live as the proof that anything is possible. Excellent vid!!
in generally for a musician, who wants to be quiet fast and tight, it´s in my mind important to have your fingesr always on the bottons, because then it costs less time to play the notes. check joe henderson out and watch his fingers.
and thats the problem with the ewi. If your fingers touch the bottoms you automatically play the notes you touch
So you should probably just approach it like playing totally different instrument. It's not like playing saxophone disables one from playing piano. It's just how it works. Most problems with saxophone still come from bad breath support and overdoing issues. It's not Hendersons finger height that made him sound "Joe".
Don't get me wrong, ergonomic issues are surely important! :) But they're not music itself. I don't think one should ban any musical possibilities for technical headrooms sake.
Having ones fingers on "keys" doesn't mean you're a faster player by any means - It's just easier - one of the main tenants of the sax's design. The Sax is one of the only instruments that doesn't use any open holes at all.
I would expect the Ewi to be more of an "electronic clarinet" then an "electronic sax" - and clarinet players can generally play much faster than most sax players I've ever known...
I now have an EWI myself, and the only way it has hindered my sax playing lately, is because I've been devoting more time getting use to the EWI. But actually, I find that learning the EWI has helped my playing on the sax in a special way. It's hard to explain, but I can find myself being able to think faster when playing fast. :-)
i think i produced half of the views on this video

alphabeets you might be right, but what algorithm(s) does it use??
I cannot find much info on the vl70.
What i do know is that when i was playing with my teachers vl70m for a while i could not see any programmable real physical parameters. My idea of physical modelling is adjustable/implementation of physical characteristics, such as different materials of the instruments and yamaha was is done i believe is 'fixed' physical modelling.i agree with you.
smoothbabic 2 years ago
The Yamaha VL series is 100% physical modeling, no wavetable. It was a decision by Yamaha to limit the amount of detailed programming you can do with the unit, so there was a secondary Mac based program that let you completely alter the physical design of the instrument (bell shape, horn length, etc. These edits could be saved to five user slots. There was concern that the detailed programmed allowed you to render a patch useless! However, the original VL1 allowed access to all there parameters.

Indeed he used Guardalas but in the early 80s he was using DUKOFFs.
I find it amusing how well he uses the 'double patches' , i.e bass clarinet -flute mapping the register of the EWI, it is interesting, specially since there are at least 2 octaves where both sounds match.
smoothbabic 2 years ago
Just so you know guys i play EWIs and my Digital Lecturers plays Steiner EVis through a VL70m and apparently the VL70m uses wavetable synthesis as suppose to physical modelling, i.e NO PHYSICAL MODELLING processing whatsoever (i might be wrong), it is not based on physical modelling algorithms.
smoothbabic 2 years ago
Wrong. The VL70-m is 100% pure Physical Modeling.
alphabeets 2 years ago
I believe that back in the day he used a modded link, but from the 90's through the 2000's he played a custom Guardala. Though on that ballad record, it sounded like he was playing a hard rubber of some sort.
In other news: this video is totally ridiculous. WTF, Michael. Rest in peace, you crazy genius. I can't believe you're gone.

Electronic Wind Instrument

what is an ewi
bobozdog 2 years ago
Stands for 'electronic wind instrument.' I guess it's basically a digital/electronic saxophone (or clarinet).
UniversityOfMunich 2 years ago
Sort of, but it can produce many different types of sounds. You can buy different pedal boards that give you a multitude of instrumentation. Every once in a while, they show Brecker's pedal board

had the lucky fortune of seeing this man in DC before he left this place. Saw him with Herbie Hancock! He started jamming out on his EWI and messed up halfway through. Was like, "Damn, I was actually liking that one".

right on! maybe the problem with 80's music is the drum sounds.. everything else is sweet,... but those snare sounds....
chrisbeckstrom 3 years ago
The rock guitar shredders get served at 8:20. Even Frank Gambale and Allan Holdsworth might not be able to pull that off.

zomg, how much does that jewel costs?
OLAPuTiPuTi 3 years ago
because i`ve heard, to play the ewi destroys your technical skills on the sax. i don`t know how brecker managed that^^
connsax58 3 years ago
Because Michael Brecker is a genius... one of the greatest musicians to ever live.
swingdancefever 3 years ago 8
Based on what? Please tell me more about this. I see no reason why learning to play a wind controllable synth would mess up your sax. Unless you seize playing sax of course... In my mind Michael will live as the proof that anything is possible. Excellent vid!!
fettfri 3 years ago
Sorry... My comment reply was addressed to connsax58 about EWI destroying sax skills.
fettfri 3 years ago
fettfri,
in generally for a musician, who wants to be quiet fast and tight, it´s in my mind important to have your fingesr always on the bottons, because then it costs less time to play the notes. check joe henderson out and watch his fingers.
and thats the problem with the ewi. If your fingers touch the bottoms you automatically play the notes you touch
connsax58 3 years ago
So you should probably just approach it like playing totally different instrument. It's not like playing saxophone disables one from playing piano. It's just how it works. Most problems with saxophone still come from bad breath support and overdoing issues. It's not Hendersons finger height that made him sound "Joe".
Don't get me wrong, ergonomic issues are surely important! :) But they're not music itself. I don't think one should ban any musical possibilities for technical headrooms sake.
fettfri 3 years ago
i didnt say, joe sounds like joe, just because of his fingerskills. for sure ergonomic issues are not music itself. i totally agree with that.
connsax58 3 years ago
Just so you know..... The EWI is way more ''ergonomically'' Challenging than sax.... especially with the rollers and all that so yeah
Pickpocket86 3 years ago
Having ones fingers on "keys" doesn't mean you're a faster player by any means - It's just easier - one of the main tenants of the sax's design. The Sax is one of the only instruments that doesn't use any open holes at all.
I would expect the Ewi to be more of an "electronic clarinet" then an "electronic sax" - and clarinet players can generally play much faster than most sax players I've ever known...
jamisnemo 3 years ago
I now have an EWI myself, and the only way it has hindered my sax playing lately, is because I've been devoting more time getting use to the EWI. But actually, I find that learning the EWI has helped my playing on the sax in a special way. It's hard to explain, but I can find myself being able to think faster when playing fast. :-)
eyeheartchrist 3 years ago
i like the sound of the ewi.
but the touchpads suck, because you always have to be with your fingers just on the notes you wanna play.
connsax58 3 years ago
The new yamaha comes out soon and is expected to rival the Akai 4000s. It has push keys rather than sensors. Probably a good choice for you.
