I was 12 yrs old when I saw this crash LIVE. My parents had just got a new VHS camera and we were recording this race. Sadly we were recording it so we could catch a crash. Unfortunately, we recorded what probably could be considered the WORST crash in indy car history, Haven't recorded a race since. RIP Krosnoff.
Anybody else notice that the yellow and red car in front of the wreck sees the crash in his mirror and intentionally misses the corner thinking he'd just get caught up in the wreck if he tried to make the corner?
Yesterday 10/16/11 we lost a indy car champion and indy 500 champ dan wheldon in a firery crash with cars flying threw the air and on fire... R.I.P Dan Wheldon
This crash turned me off car racing for good. Over the years, too many accidents, too many deaths. To me, the sport lost its glamour and excitement. It was beyond awful to watch this in my hometown.
Driver of the blue&white car was a complete asshole - he just veered his car out without even checking if someone was outside him! Stefan Johansson I think.
@acenace24 you cant really say that. im sure he didnt think he was dead. as many fatal crashes theres been especially in open wheel. there could of been alot more over the years. im glad safety has improved.
The real story is that Johannson never saw Krosnoff as evidenced when he turned hard right at 0:01, he already had the inside (assuming 2 wide) but Krosnoff went to make it 3 wide going into the right hander. This was too narrow section of track for 3 wide. Unfortunately they both erred which led to Krosnoff's accident, I watched the race LIVE in 96 and remember it well.
i cant believe i am watching these videos . I seen moores crash live and krosnoffs also. I knew right off the bat bat both were killed. It is strange I also seen Earnhardt killed too., but I did not htink he was hurt. RIP My friends God Bless you and your familys
A wreck like this is so bad that even with the best safety equipment of today, a driver would be lucky to survive. Fortunately, there hasn't been a wreck like this either.
The fence did a nice job of allowing the wreck to bounce along until the pole got in the way. At that point the car broke in two and Jeff's body along with the tub made a 90 degree deflection back onto the track - likely what killed him.
@SwitchRich They have to try and be hopeful no matter how bad the crash looks. Though very unlikely someone could ever have survived a crash like that, crazier things have happened.
Sadly I have a photo of a door to the 1992 Le Mas Toyota , that the drivers names on it were Roland Ratzenberger-Jeff Kroznoff-Eddie Irvine and 1 other..now 2 gone not long after that Le MAns race R.I.P guys
@sonofakline45 not sure exactly but im just guessing i mean those cars may be light but i cant imagine surviving an engine falling on u specially at that speed
@crocodeilos Im glad they did, it would be so agonizing and painful to have to deal with such severe injuries inside the hospital. if i could choose to die in that or go to the hospital, i'd die. i bet youd to the same thing too.
After all these years, I have never heard anyone bring up the fact that former Formula 1 veteren driver Stefan Johannson seems to be cutting off rookie Jeff Krosnoff. (a move that happens quite often in F1.) Take a look. In my opinion, he could have avoided the whole incident.
@racemarshalcanada Yep, I have always thought this as well and stated it on several occasions than it was Stefan's fault and he could have avoided the incident.
@cristianodamatta I am sure it was the front driver's fault but couldn't he be sued? It was really a cutting and a very bad one. Krosnoff's car did in fact hit him and just as it did, it started to ascend. But it is possible that he didn't see him which I doubt.
@LucaTurilli89 you can't be sued for a racing accident, everyone on t he track is racing to gain position and mistakes are bound to happen. It's not like he MEANT to cause this accident.... he just didn't realize Krosnoff was to the inside of him, he was looking ahead not in his mirrors to make sure he hit his next braking point.
I was thinking of Jeff the other day when Mark Webber had a similar accident at a track very similar to this. I had only just mentioned him in fact when the accident happened. Thankfully this time Mark walked away. Rest in peace Jeff - never to be forgotten.
@Maybrick44 Yeah when I saw Webber's Valencia accident it reminded me a lot of what happened with Krosnoff. If he had been flicked into the catch fencing we could have had a very similar outcome, too. Webbo was very fortunate.
@cristianodamatta no he wasnt. F1 cars are extremely safe nowadays and with improved helmets and the HANS device he would have survived. Indy cars are just been unsafe all along. Just look at what happened to Dan Wheldon
@NOXXism I think another factor of that is Indycar Drivers actually like to pass, which increases the risks of an accident, but F1 drivers don't even perform more than 60 or 70 overtakes for an entire season. Think last time I checked, Vettel was #1 in overtakes and he only had like 47 for the entire season. That's pathetic.
@erasetoimprove yeah but overtakes are a lot easier when you're racing in circles. But f1 sucks balls today. Look back at the 80's and 90's and that was real F1. Just man and machine no drs or kers
@erasetoimprove Button has over 70 passes so far this year, including 26 at Montreal, where he was in last place with 95 miles to go and won. Thru 9 races, F1 was averaging 69 passes per race. There is no way Indycar can match that on road and street courses, where they seem to mix follow the leader with crashing.
@NOXXism full faced helmets, seat belts, HANS device, SAFER barriers, safety cars, sealed fuel tanks, monocoque design, strengthened bulkheads, higher cockpit design....etc etc all safety features employed and developed by indycar and then the rest of the world of motorsport including f1. indycar safety should not be questoned after the freak accident in las vegas. accidents happen, people occassionally do get fatally injured.its not nice but thats the reality of motorsport sadly. f1 is safe? no
@paulboggan Higher cockpits were implemented by F1 after Senna's death and not in Indycar until 2 years later after Brayton's death. F1 developed monocoques in the 1960s while Indycars were still roadsters and carbon fibre monocoques in the early 80s. As for Indycar safety, it should be questioned when they restart oval races in the rain, have safety trucks driving against the flow as a race starts, and put too many cars on a high speed oval.
@gturner38 agreed, newhampshire was a complete farce. and the 34 cars on track at vegas was in hindsight foolhardy. but ive seen so many damning reports from experts who really should know what they are talking about. i take your points on board.....cheers!
@paulboggan The danger in Indycar racing is due to the way they race at an average speed of 200mph wheel to wheel in tight packs. With open wheel cars which flip when wheels climb over each other that is massively dangerous and you can't call the accident in Vegas a freak accident as they went into the race with concerns over this very issue. They need to get their shit together and get some fenders around those wheels. They are doing that next year I think.
That is absolutely terrible...gee and I thought Gilles Villenueve's fatal was bad. How Stefan Johannson (the other car involved) didnt get wiped out as well was incredible.
When Jeff hit the fence, it was forced back allowing the car to hit a large tree behind it. Afterwards, it struck a light pole and disintegrated (debris striking Gary Arvin). I remember seeing the tree afterwards while attending that year's CNE, with an obvious scar on its bark (an many memorial flowers around it). It has long since been cut down. Subsequent races in Toronto had the fence right on top of the wall, closer to the track and outside of the lamp posts. RIP Jeff and Gary Arvin.
I remember this. I was REALLY big into indy car when I was 6 and the 96' season was a really eventful year. Sadly, this was the biggest incident of the season. Both Krosnoff and the track marshall were killed in the crash.
Interesting enough, according to the wiki, it was a tree near the track that Jeff hit and was killed by, but it looks to me more like that was a lightpole that he hit.
@lhagiduty he reacts the exact way every race announcer reacts the first time the watch an extremly violent wreck. Is he supposed to realize this is a fatal wreck the first time he watches it and begin commentary they way ben stieen would do it? he says the same thing everyone else says to themselves when they see wrecks like this, OMG HOLY SHITE except he said it on tv bc thats what he gets paid to do
@lhagiduty Every commentator reacts like that the first time they watch a replay of an extremly violent wreck. Is he supposed realize its a fatal wreck, and change his commentary style to the way ben stine would have commentated. Everyone says similar shit to themselves like omg, or holy crap, he says it out loud bc thats what he gets paid 2 do
I saw this live on U.S. tv. Only one time, seconds later, they showed a front view, the front half of the car gone, Jeff's legs obviously broken and him motionless. Made me so sad and rethink my love for motorsports. My extreme respects to those he left behind, and hope I do not offend with this post. Peace be with Mr. Krosnoff.
Saw it live too. all i could see over and over was the pit guy getting clobbered by the wheel of the car. Al i kept thinkin' was: how the hell are the announcers/crew not seeing this? They never saw it.
his body didnt get riped in half at all.... what happened was it was in the seat the hole time like you said. but he suffered a major cardiac arrest ( like micheal jackson except they coulndt save him fast enough) and major head injuries
Wow, it looks like the car just disintegrated or something, the main profile just kind of disappeared and you can hardly tell where the driver ended up. The commentator sounded a bit too awed by the violence of the crash rather than worrying about the driver, imo. =\
wow, you must be a real prick in real life, if I ever met you off the internet id smash your head in with a hammer, but it would be a waste of a hammer.
In the cockpit cell that got separated after the impact. You can notice it briefly within the smoke, it spun towards the wall on the right from the camera.
He was basically stuck deeper into the seat from the impact with the concrete pole and it took a lot of time to get him out.
Very sad, I remember it clearly, watching the race live. Happened at the very end, with just 3 laps to go or so.
I don't undersand why the marshalls had to stand behind that very low 'wall'...I don't know who told them to stay there but they should have stayed behind the fence...The marshall would be alive today if they're more careful.
Unfortunately Jeff Krosnoff had a very bad luck, he couldn't have the chance of survive...
(ps.:I don't like the commentator, he says 'Woooow', or what? He probably knew (or felt) that it's a fatal crash..)
@lilic1 I was and still am one of those marshalls. We voluntairily stand there to do flagging etc. (yes, we are a little crazy.) If we stood behind the other fence, the drivers wouldn't see the flags. there is now a double fence since 1997.
maybe people don't know that a track worker also lost his life that day from a tire flying over the fence and catching him in the head. may they both rest in peace
The death of the Marshall was caused by disgraceful track design with the safety fences behind the marshalls and also a pole in front of the safety fences. Whoever the dickhead was that made it that way should have been charged with manslaughter.
This was an awful accident. I was at the race with my uncle when it happened. You've never heard a screaming crowd all of a sudden just go completely silent.
This may seem inane, but I almost didn't go get my driver's license because of this crash. I was terrified and I got my learners the next day (after seeing it live on tv). Took me months to get in the drivers seat of a car. I'll never forget Michael Andretti's face as he EF and SJ looked on.
jesus how could you possibly survive that. the car just exploded. from what i read i heard this krosnoff was a lovely guy. eddie irvine spoke volumes for him.

@lhagiduty Every commentator reacts like that the first time they watch a replay of an extremly violent wreck. Is he supposed realize its a fatal wreck, and change his commentary style to the way ben stine would have commentated. Everyone says similar shit to themselves like omg, or holy crap, he says it out loud bc thats what he gets paid 2 do
tsharpmac420 8 months ago
That's one of the worst motorsport accidents. It was very fortunate that the car didn't fireball as it could have been a lot worse.

Yes, marshall Gary Arvin also perished.

MrKillerbunny911 2 years ago
Wasn't a bystander it was a track worker that was also killed.

Poor guy i dont get sumthin did his body disintigrate or broke i cant tell
Purecarnige 2 years ago
I saw this live on U.S. tv. Only one time, seconds later, they showed a front view, the front half of the car gone, Jeff's legs obviously broken and him motionless. Made me so sad and rethink my love for motorsports. My extreme respects to those he left behind, and hope I do not offend with this post. Peace be with Mr. Krosnoff.

Saw it live too. all i could see over and over was the pit guy getting clobbered by the wheel of the car. Al i kept thinkin' was: how the hell are the announcers/crew not seeing this? They never saw it.

where has his body flown?
amantino4 2 years ago
He stayed strapped in the cockpit the whole time.
cristianodamatta 2 years ago
his body didnt get riped in half at all.... what happened was it was in the seat the hole time like you said. but he suffered a major cardiac arrest ( like micheal jackson except they coulndt save him fast enough) and major head injuries
f3wbs 2 years ago
Wow, it looks like the car just disintegrated or something, the main profile just kind of disappeared and you can hardly tell where the driver ended up. The commentator sounded a bit too awed by the violence of the crash rather than worrying about the driver, imo. =\

RIP to Jeff & Gary.
lilic1 2 years ago 2
@lilic1 I was and still am one of those marshalls. We voluntairily stand there to do flagging etc. (yes, we are a little crazy.) If we stood behind the other fence, the drivers wouldn't see the flags. there is now a double fence since 1997.

man thats terrible car hit marshall in a head
Amonfobious 2 years ago
Yeah wheel to wheel contact when Johanssen virtually plowed right into him.
Cliner97 2 years ago
maybe people don't know that a track worker also lost his life that day from a tire flying over the fence and catching him in the head. may they both rest in peace
nainosaj 3 years ago 2
The death of the Marshall was caused by disgraceful track design with the safety fences behind the marshalls and also a pole in front of the safety fences. Whoever the dickhead was that made it that way should have been charged with manslaughter.
AlonsoRules 3 years ago 4
@0:03 u can see the car hit the marshall, agree with u, terrible track design, rip to both of them
chlillis 2 years ago 2
A wheel to wheel contact with Stefan Johanssons car caused this awful accident which i saw live on Eurosport July 14th 1996.
