Yup. The Mining Act was written in 1870. You own the surface rights to your land but not the 'sub-surface' rights. A lot of people in Robertsville and southern Ontario are calling for an overhaul of this Act and a moratorium on uranium mining.
The Mining Act allows prospectors to claim a stake to the minerals under 'your' land. They can mine out what they can get and leave. Good for them, not so good for you.
A little towm called Sant Rita New Mexico
was moved off so the company could mine the copper.
