Very good film. I think the premise is pretty implausible... London's main gangster deciding to kill some top IRA guys even after he's realised the chaos that has been taking place is the result of a misunderstanding.
To then think that the IRA won't consider avenging the deaths he has caused is incredibly naive.
The film has so much energy that these points don't really matter. Hoskins is great and his final scene is marvellous.
It proves you don't need words when you're a very good actor.
When it all comes together, it's Cinema. This is without a doubt a brilliant piece of film making. Ansolutely inspired directing, writing, acting, sets, music - the creative people involved must have been pushing each other to peaks.
At risk of sounding like a pointless airhead, I fucking love this movie - it is more than a gangster movie, it's a movie about change, and having the world slip away.
I thought scarface was overrated, Carlitos way was alot better with some better and more interesting characters. They say one of the sneakiest crimes of the film is Sean Penn stealing the film from the great Al Pacino.
A great film with Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren at their best. The film was certainly set with real issues in mind, the social deprivation of Brixton, the constant threat of many years of IRA bombing in Britain and the development of the London Docklands.
Roberto Saviano's Gomorra David Simon's The Wire take the same type of approach in crating deeply intricate works, that makes us lot think hard at what we are all seeing up there on that screen, but those are not true "gangster films" if at all, when i think of what is, there is in my opinion no "gangster movie" that has ever been made that is so perfect as that of THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY
my opinion understandably will not be the same with people who are not from the UK, manly because their fed on a diet of Quentin tarantino, guy richie, martin scorsasie and the sopranos, but more for reason being that this is a very British film that unashamedly shows some nuances that come with being British,
on the other hand the long good Friday is more rooted in showing a realism that encompasses a wide range of subjects that correspond not only to then, but also right now and for everyone, not just the harold shand's of this world.. .this not only gives us its style but more importantly its substance. John Mackenzie wanted to make a gangster film relevant to the time and place in which it was made but the work is still of great relevance to day..
to me when i think of those two films the thing that comes to my mind the most is scorsese's style more then anything, IE you remember those great camera setups more then any overall deep meaning to the films, other then crime fucks you up, and you can't trust no one when your part of the mob.
Danny you make no sense in your rebuke to me about my opinion on this seminal work of which today has become one of the greatest commentary's on Thatcherism, even though the word Thatcherism had not yet been invented. goodfellas is just a vamped up version of mean streets.
the long good friday had Bob Hoskins, goodfellas had a tapeworm that went by the name of Ray Liotta. goodfellas boring film and crap pizzas. i rest my fucking case
Normally, I don't like gangster films very much, but I love "The Godfather" and "The Long Good Friday"! This last one even more than The Godfather, because it appeals to me more (because of the locations and the characters).
I think Helen's role is wonderful, because she isn't just "decoration" like most of the women in this kind of films, and she gives this film (and "Harold the criminal") a heart.
And what an awesome ending... It's a classic! Thanks for posting this interesting documentary!

Helen Mirren would still get it. Not too shabby for an older girl.

hoskins modelled harold shand on the real life gangster freddie foreman, he did a good job!!

We shouldn't laugh.
Pierce was just getting going and Helen was dragging herself across from Caligola.
Still, it all seemed to work out well for them both.

At 0:05 there are Brick Top and Hatchet Harry in the background, a little younger then in Guy Ritchie's movies.

Nice to see the changing face of Docklands too.
