@NeoArashi Unn,I hope you don't think I was trying to offend someone.
I mean,by myself,I'm a FF whore too,and the same with DQ.But It's just too bad that DQ was barely knew here before VIII and IX,because a lot of story already happened with the franchise by the time those 2 hit our shores,while FF,even in their better(or worse) games,were,like,hyped by everyone.
It deserves more.Hopefully the number of fans will be getting bigger and bigger from now on.
@faytlengod While I was introduced by the main series thanks to VIII, I now own V(DS) VI (DS) VIII, IX, DQM:J and DQH: RS If Only I could get this game again (I sold it because I wasn't enough of a fan of the series :(
@NeoArashi IV DS is very good too,and it's short.I think I beat it 2x in 3 weeks.Currently I own DQVI DS,DQVII for psone,VIII and IX.
I already beat V on the DS too,although it was on a flashcard(and so was IV). I'll buy then eventually,probably on July/
Now I'm playing VI DS,still playing IX,and III for snes.
You should play VII,it's very good(particulary my favorite,with VIII)and very long. It has more than 2x times the amount of jobs IX has,your characters can even become monsters =p
@NeoArashi If you are referring to only DS games then yes, you have them all. DQ 3 was released on GB color, DQ monsters and monsters 2 was released on GB, and DQ7 and 8 were released on PS1 and 2.
@Queklain666 LOL What are you talking about? Are you the only person in the history of gaming not to have a 200:00+ hr. DQIX save file?!? The new Dragon Quest games are AWESOMESAUCE!!!
The earliest RPGs were pen and paper (Dungeons & Dragons) in the early 70's. The first videogame RPGs were games like pedit5 and Dungeon (after D&D) in 1974. Ultima, one of the best RPG series of all time, began in 1981. Western RPGs predated their Japanese counterparts by about a decade or so. The first all-Japanese RPG was Dragon Lair, released in 1982 by Fugen Denshi for the FM7. Dragon Quest was the first Famicom RPG (1986). Although Deadly Towers (Mashou) predates it, it's not a "true" RPG.
Does anyone know if theres a log in this game? I lost my copy and decided to just buy DQ5 (which was PURE epic) until I found it. like 5 months later I finally found DQ4 but since theres no party chat I don't know where i'm supposed to go now or where I left off....was it really that hard to keep party chat in....-_-
What you have to bear in mind is that Dragon Quest INVENTED most of what we now consider Japanese RPG cliches. If you pick up the series for the first time now, it'll seem EXTREMELY cliched, but for its time it was absolutely revolutionary.
Personally, given that so many new JRPGs have some arbritary, shovelled-in mechanic or other, I find the cliche simplicity of old Dragon Quest games kind of refreshing.
Shame they kept the 'I invented these cliches so I can use them and still be good' attitude into the New Age. Apparently they don't know about this thing called the 'canon'.
DQ8 would have been so much better without the old-school stuff.
@Yorukage No it isn't...? I know this comment was made a long time ago, but I feel the need to correct you on that. There have been multiple JRPGs created before Dragon Quest.
@supersmash27 Nihon Falcom created the RPG series 'Dragon Slayer' in 1984, and released the second game in the series, 'Xanadu', in 1985. Dragon Warrior, the first game in the DQ series, was released in 1986.
There are probably other JRPGs that were created even earlier than that, but I don't know of them.
I find the very start of the music to be perfect for a "spiraling" transition between field and battle scene.

In my opinion, this battle theme is a bit over the top.
Its not a bad composition, but just a little bit TOO hardcore.

@mirrorpiece What do you mean with "hardcore"? lol
Scuro1000 16 hours ago
@ThePogeymanzepic It was changed, because they bought the rights to it. The name Dragon Quest, was original owned by a table top RPG company.

@NeoArashi I finally got a DQ5.It was kinda expensive,but totally worth.
I don't think I'll buy IV anymore,because the other versions,except the japaneses,had all the Talk command dialogues cut.
I didn't know about that when I played it =/

The only problem I ever had with this theme is that it takes way too long to hit the best part of the melody. Most of my battles are over by then. :(

Isn't DS an "action" RPG? And not for console. DQ is distinguished as being the original console j-rpg.
