Neil Innes did some amazing work on The Rutles. Anyone can do a straight parody, but Innes did the music more in the style of The Beatles, instead of a beat-for-beat spoof. Thats why songs like Doubleback Alley stands on their own; Its really solid music.
Me and my mates used to pretend that the Rutles were the real band and the Beatles were the pastiche.Ah 'happy smiling faces if I flog my memory'-bit of a cheeky dig there over Paul's tendency to romanticize squalor (see also Ray Davies,Lionel Bart etc )
This song just is wonderful, Innes make you almost remember this as a hit from way back when, the production would make George Martin proud, not simply parody but real affection for it's origin .
Don't get me wrong, I love *BOTH* The Beatles and The Rutles, but this is the only time that Neil Innes even outdid Paul's original...

This album cover reads, "Includes 24-page full color picture book".
"Color" is the American spelling which excludes "u".
Do they mean me?

"Plenty to do in Doubleback Alley
Play peek-a-boo with Saccharine Sally
Bouncing a ball against the wall
showing her drawers you come indoors
her dad would call"
Wish this was my childhood.

I distinctly remember this song came out a few months before Penny Lane, which is further proof that the Beatles were thiefs.

@pbrick6301 Slight sense of humour failure there from the original poster - or was it *super-duper-double-irony*?

@Ranjeeb You mean the Rutles, right?

This is one of my favourite Rutles tunes.
I happen to have the original Rutles LP! The All You Need Is Cash documentary is also hilarious!
