i remember this plane made a hell of a noise, i was washin dishes in my uncles cafe not too far from the front and herd it coming i thought there was an earthquake or somethin :P
Both the Vulcan and B52 are magnificent achievements. There is no point in arguing which is better, because no one on this board is qualified to answer.
Both put on a great show, and will rattle your guts
@UKkid19 L O L wow you are a real man. They don't have any planes to fight back and you think this is a manly thing to do to bomb some one who has nothing to throw back at you. Every one knows and whole worlds has seen all over the news who runs like a girl. L O L
A beautiful girl with sharp teeth. I remember these low over my house in service. Even knowing they are protecting your skys, you couldn't help but clench your cheeks!
I'm a air cadet and recently i was out gliding when this beast flew within 100m of me straight out of the clouds i was terrified at first then felt awe struck at what had just happed it was a one in a life time thing
Vulcans frequently visited the United States during the 1960s and 1970s to participate in air shows and static displays, as well as to participate in the Strategic Air Command's Annual Bombing and Navigation Competition at such locations as Barksdale AFB, Louisiana and the former McCoy AFB, Florida, with the RAF crews representing Bomber Command and later Strike Command.
Vulcans also took part in the 1960, 1961, and 1962 Operation Skyshield exercises, in which NORAD defences were tested against possible Soviet air attack, the Vulcans simulating Soviet fighter/bomber attacks against New York, Chicago and Washington. The results of the tests were classified until 1997
@UKkid19 The Vulcan's certainly got Argentina worried, they feared an attack against one of their mainland cities. Martin Withers did an ace job on Port Stanley runway, for sure. 21 x 1,000lbers & one bang in the middle of the runway
I've seen this at the Chicago Airshow and thought it was the most amazing and beautiful jet there. Only the Harrier came close in WOW factor. Thopse engines sound incredible. It's too bad it's out of service now. It will never be equalled.
Ok this cost around 8 million pounds to get it back to an airworthy state.
But on the news today some complete cunt has brought a varse at auction for 42 million pounds.
Its complete madness that this sort of money can be wasted on a bit of china when around 4000 children die everyday because they have to drink dirty water.
@cjlowndes If their mothers did not breed like flies they would not have to drink dirty water. Further more a majority of impoverished people are in India a country that spends millions on nuclear weapon, so let them look after their own.
i was lucky enough to see the only Vulcan fly out of Kemble in Gloustershire afew times while i was living across the road from the air strip in 2009. Fantastic
AceWalkerAstronaut. I went to a flying display many years ago at Church Fenton, one of many thousands. The Harrier did it's bow and took off vertically. When the Vulcan came over and turned on afterburners. It sent every car alarm off in the car park very alarming. But we thought - what a beast.
@UKkid19 yeh sure they would, they've prob seen more fighter / bomber planes fly over them than you have in your life.. i think really you should get them in your army..
These used to fly in and out of SAC HQ back in the 60s & 70s. Loved to watch them take off. They assumed a pretty steep angle of attack shortly after clearing the end of the runway
Here's one American warbird enthusiast who salutes the British people, and dedicated volunteers who had the audacity and perseverance to put a multiengine strategic jet bomber back in the sky in private hands.....The announcer is right, there were many who said it couldn't be done, including me, but they pulled it off! Here's to ya! I wonder if anybody in this country will have the drive, know-how and resources to do the same for the last airworthy B-52 when they retire them 30 years hence....
I was at riat 2009 and I finally saw this beautiful plane Truly awesome. Im italian we love our planes but why does the uk government not help with saving this beautiful historic plane?
ABSOLUTLEY BRILLIANT.. my opinion far better than any of the american bombers. just see for yourselves. remarkable. she can still do a job for our FANTASTIC RAF.
I think this airplane is amazing and gorgeous, but it's very old. As old as our B-52, which is just as comparable.
But in terms of "better than any of the American bombers", that's only your national pride speaking mate. The B-2 Spirit Bomber, the B-1 Lancer Bomber, among other task-specific bombers we have, how can you say that.
@thechoosendude Its was certainly the earliest and longest serving jet bomber until the early 2000s. The B52 is obviously still in service but it was a beautiful plane
@thechoosendude its not just national pride, but backed by tha fact this plane had handling charactaristics much like a fighter jet, along with lots of other mods n cons, but i would say the b2's ect are more capible for heavy loads.
@chrisandrews1000 vulcan carries 21.000 LBS of bombs the B52 carries 70.000LBS of bombs, is faster flew over the most heavily defended air space in history North Vietnam and is still in service and will bge until 2040 thats 88 years of service vulcan left service 1985 now what is better bomber
@jers59 Two totally different planes. The Vulcan was designed to carry a Nuclear strike into the heart of Soviet Union. To be in the air in 4 mins after the warning of an incoming strike she also flew the longest strike mission flying from Britain to the Faklands in 1982 for the black buck raid on an Argentinian held landing strip. Your B52 may carrier alot heavier payload, but it could not manage the above two feats!
@Saxonsoldiers first B52,s flew operation chrome dome missions 12 B52,s stationed outside the soviet union borders 24 hours a day ready to nule the russkies and B52,s were on 24 hour alert from bases in US they flew 35 hour combat mission in first gulf war which was alot longer then black buck mission
@jers59 Right, B52's......big plane, very big plane. Vulcan, a strategic bomber with the agility of a fighter. B52's would have got anywhere near the Soviet Union. They'd have flashed up the minute they entered russian radar. Yes so would the Vulcan but it had a fighting chance of evading anything put up to counter it.A B52 would just be a massive target! More than one would be a gift to any soviet fighter pilot.
the reason the afterburners are not used all the times is due to the cost of running an the fuel also they load the plane with fuel for enough for the display so not to waste money, also afterburners may not be used depending on weather conditions an or height of display if that answers your question this is not the only reason but one which was stressed at fairford in the vulcan trust tent!
yeah opps a daisy sorry bout that like you said the only olympus engines with afterburners were fitted to concorde I got mixed up thank you for commenting an highlighting my mistake feel a bit like a tool now!!
i am a lifelong vulcan fan since its first flight, but having seen the displays at fairford and recently at dawlish in devon,i have to say that i am bitterly dissappointed because you dont just go to see the vulcan, but to hear it.has he been told not to use the afterburners/throttle?could someone please enlighten me.i have been a regular contributor to the restoration but i would not have done so to see it flown in such a pussy manner.
