I would go for the Unreal 3 engine any time. Most games I played showed really good use of this engine. (yes, some games using U 3 are shitty, such as Turning Point Fail of Liberty for instance)
AtmosFEAR 4 is a Russian engine developed by Action Forms and it is actually much better than unreal engine and possibly better than cryengine. the graphics are amazing, and very realistic. it supports water physics and the latest version was developed in 2008. The last game developed was Cryostasis ad came out in 2008 in Russia and 2009 in North America.
Unreal wins, unreal can have both amazing outdoor environments as well as indoor environments.
And Unreal can have spaces within spaces, if you don't know what that meant, go check out Hazards the journey of life, it's like a door with nothing behind it, but if you go through it you are somewhere else.

Honestly, I have to side with UE for the sole purpose of UDK. If cryengine came out with a free public engine, instead of a simple modding editor, then I would go for cryengine.
They both have great graphics, but honestly, I think UE looks kinda artsy, and cryengine feels a bit more realistic.

@vVFuelVv That has to do with the UDK. They made that engine specifically for developers. They spent tons of times on the tools and literally allow you to release a completely full game and make up to $500,000 dollars before you need to own rights to the engine. You aren't allowed to modify the actual engine without rights, but anybody who gets that far can literally show Epic their game and Epic will invest with a percentage of profit of sales going to them.
@reztreborn It can be true depending on how you use the unreal engine. For UT3 they went for a unrealistic color scheme. But most pepole use u-engine with the the things in it out of the box (theres alot).

There's a reason why only three games using Cryengine 2 have been released since the engine was finished in 2007: it's one of the clunkiest and least user friendly engines to develop for. It doesn't matter how great its graphics are, it's difficult and time-consuming to use and gets in the way of actual gameplay, both on the developer's side and the end user's. It's a horrible game engine, period.
CryEngine 2 produces better graphics...but it is much more demanding, the graphics/performance proportion of UE3 is much better, and that's why many games are made on UE3...so, overally, UE3 is better.
Unreal fails so epically....same with the song choices.... Cry engine 3 is the way to go why com pair 2 they need like an unreal 5 to com pair to cry engine 3. My school has us using unreal and i hate them for it.
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online division.... Im in my 2nd year out of 4. We don't use Unreal untill next year or something...But they said thats the only think we will be using. @Deglaze123 That's weird, I think I played around 20 games that used UE and 15 of them have terrible texture pop up issues (Borderlands, Frontlines: FOW, Dark Void, UT3). Never noticed textures popping when playing Crysis.
Well their is two things wrong with this. A. You were playing Crysis on your PC which obviously a PC has more power and for you to have put this video up in February of 2009 your PC had to be EXPENSIVE! Plus you used Gears 2 which is ONLY on the Xbox 360. B. You used Gears of War at all over a game like Mass Effect and if you had done this with in the past year you coulda even done Mass Effect 2 which was amazingly done and looks just as good as Cryengine 2. Their both great engines eitherway.
this shit is really starting to bug me, you cant just decide which is better by the games they have made. They are BOTH very capable engines, capable of amazing lighting, textures, and physics etc. the games that are made by far do not stretch the TRUE potential of the engine, but it refers to the limits of the tech it runs on, sure you can make a super detailed game that no system can run on each engine. crysis can only run on high end PCs, gears runs on xbox, so in the end gears profits more.

you can't really compare these engines, the only people who use the cry engine is crytek, yet the unreal engine is widely used, Epic even gives away a free version of it for download as the "unreal development kit"
if you want to compare an engine to the unreal 3 engine have a look at the source engine or the net immerse engine bethesda uses for oblivion and fallout. Hell i don't even need to mention ID's tech 4 and 5 engines (doom and rage)
And if you use the mods the community has made it get alot more prettier than what you see here. (For the Cryengine 2) and FYI that isn't on Very high for Crysis. More like Medium.
I like UT3 more just because i have the abilty to use Brushes Where Cryengine 2 will only allow me to use Mesh i made UT3 is much more easier for Blocking out a level for gameplay then Cryengine other wise there both graphicly awesome

Haha, I like how the 2 highest rated comments support opposite engines. They are both great engines. Cryengine 2 has better presentation, but Unreal Engine 3 has much better optimization and support. Also, a decent part of today's games are on par with the Cryengine 2 in terms of effects, but those lush, interactive green jungles at steady framerates are yet to be matched. Also, the Unreal engines always seemed backwards in map editors, but a lot of games are still built on it. I can't decide.
As I always say : Unreal Engine makes the most beautiful graphics while CryEngine makes more realistic physics effects.
Also Unreal Engine requires less than Cryengine and runs quite faster.
You can't really say that one is better than the other because Unreal Engine Physics suxx and cryengine requires litterally a monster to run at maximum. Also they are used in quite different games.
well, as a developer and someone has had a little bit of experiance ith the cryengine and alot of experiance with the unreal engine I have to say unreal engine. while cryengine may have more and better tech, the unreal engine still offers most modern tech. cryengine for graphics but when it comes to over all accessibility for multiple platforms, and how well it runs on a variation of PC's, unreal engine is better.

In crysis textures are crappy low res, but the visual effects sometimes trick your eye like rendering lots and lots of grass which isn't that difficult. CryEngine 2 produces better graphics...but it is much more demanding, the graphics/performance proportion of UE3 is much better, and that's why many games are made on UE3...so, overally, UE3 is better.

Unreal fails so epically....same with the song choices.... Cry engine 3 is the way to go why com pair 2 they need like an unreal 5 to com pair to cry engine 3. My school has us using unreal and i hate them for it.

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online division.... Im in my 2nd year out of 4. We don't use Unreal untill next year or something...But they said thats the only think we will be using. I honestly don't know much about it other then a lot of games that use unreal look just that, unreal (gears of war was alright i do admit) (some others look decent as well). I don't like how the stuff looks. I feel the game unreal has horrible graphics.

@Deglaze123 That's weird, I think I played around 20 games that used UE and 15 of them have terrible texture pop up issues (Borderlands, Frontlines: FOW, Dark Void, UT3). Never noticed textures popping when playing Crysis.

Well their is two things wrong with this. A. You were playing Crysis on your PC which obviously a PC has more power and for you to have put this video up in February of 2009 your PC had to be EXPENSIVE! Plus you used Gears 2 which is ONLY on the Xbox 360. B. You used Gears of War at all over a game like Mass Effect and if you had done this with in the past year you coulda even done Mass Effect 2 which was amazingly done and looks just as good as Cryengine 2. Their both great engines eitherway.

this shit is really starting to bug me, you cant just decide which is better by the games they have made. They are BOTH very capable engines, capable of amazing lighting, textures, and physics etc. the games that are made by far do not stretch the TRUE potential of the engine, but it refers to the limits of the tech it runs on, sure you can make a super detailed game that no system can run on each engine. crysis can only run on high end PCs, gears runs on xbox, so in the end gears profits more.

cryengine is more beautiful and probably easier to make better graphics but for the power used in gears its a lot better. there just isnt a game that takes as much power as crysis. at the same time cryengine 3 is better than both so given the same number of engines crytek is better

you can't really compare these engines, the only people who use the cry engine is crytek, yet the unreal engine is widely used, Epic even gives away a free version of it for download as the "unreal development kit"
if you want to compare an engine to the unreal 3 engine have a look at the source engine or the net immerse engine bethesda uses for oblivion and fallout. Hell i don't even need to mention ID's tech 4 and 5 engines (doom and rage)

I like UT3 more just because i have the abilty to use Brushes Where Cryengine 2 will only allow me to use Mesh i made UT3 is much more easier for Blocking out a level for gameplay then Cryengine other wise there both graphicly awesome

@Tobolococo What I mean is that Cry Engine is for realistic games and Unreal Engine for Sci-Fi games (which are more beautiful only because the sci-fi justifies the shiny and glowing parts everywhere on the bodies and the surroundings)

Game history has prooved that Unreal Engine is far better for sci-fi games (Mass Effect, Gears Of War, Unreal Tournament 3).

Haha, I like how the 2 highest rated comments support opposite engines. They are both great engines. Cryengine 2 has better presentation, but Unreal Engine 3 has much better optimization and support. Also, a decent part of today's games are on par with the Cryengine 2 in terms of effects, but those lush, interactive green jungles at steady framerates are yet to be matched. Also, the Unreal engines always seemed backwards in map editors, but a lot of games are still built on it. I can't decide.

As I always say : Unreal Engine makes the most beautiful graphics while CryEngine makes more realistic physics effects.
Also Unreal Engine requires less than Cryengine and runs quite faster.
You can't really say that one is better than the other because Unreal Engine Physics suxx and cryengine requires litterally a monster to run at maximum. Also they are used in quite different games.

well, as a developer and someone has had a little bit of experiance ith the cryengine and alot of experiance with the unreal engine I have to say unreal engine. while cryengine may have more and better tech, the unreal engine still offers most modern tech. cryengine for graphics but when it comes to over all accessibility for multiple platforms, and how well it runs on a variation of PC's, unreal engine is better.

In crysis textures are crappy low res, but the visual effects sometimes trick your eye like rendering lots and lots of grass which isn't that difficult. The upcoming Overgrowth which is developed by five people looks better.

@FullM3tal7ack3t textures are crap, it all looks perfect but when you get up close it looks like shit (like in the Doom 3 engine, also found in Prey) and halo has some kickass graphix cuz at first on a video it looks like shit, but once you play it it looks pretty good. And the rest look better. Just look at Vanquish! Dont tell me it looks worse than this!!!

Unreal beats Cryengine with water effects, Cryengine makes Unreal its bitch with Vegetation, as for physics, there no big physics in either, aside from the soft bodies in unreal, and plants in Cryengine
Basically, wait until Cryengine 3 on PC, and Unreal 4 on PC
then we can have a whole new generation to bitch about :D

What the heck you compare gears of war to crysis we all know that the graphics of crysis are so advance it's almost like for xbox 720 if the unreal engine try to do advance graphics like crysis 360 and ps3 can't handle those graphics only PC can max it out if ps3 or 360 try to run that kind of graphics maybe the the settings goes medium but i won't judge the graphics gameplay and story should be the best not just the graphics.
