Hey thanks for the comments and for favoriting my video! I checked out Nick Cave. He's got that dark quality I like - he seems like a cross between Stan Ridgeway and Jim Morrison. Very cool!
Thank you evnz8! I noticed you favorited a Kris Rowley (zzzzzzzzap) song, too. We collaborated on a video you might enjoy. It is one of his tunes called "Black Dog", which I created the video for. If you have the time, check it out. Thanks for mentioning the chorus. My son Sam did a wonderful job, I think. ~Jon
Thank God Sammy was willing! I struggled with that chorus the whole way through, when it finally dawned on me that a child should sing it! We overdubbed his vox about six times to get that Vienna Boys Choir sound. Thanks!
Yes, the child's voice harks back to innocence -- before the wrongs were committed.
The weight of the processing on the verses is maybe a bit much, losing come vocal clarity, but the voice on the verses does a good job of communicating the darkness of the life that is realizing the need to make restitution.
Very interesting...
I found you in KokoKaina's subscribers. Wondered who else was there early on...
Hi Dan. Yes... there was gobs of processing going on all over this piece. I guess I am that proverbial kid in the candy shop when it comes to my "grander" projects; just too many tweaks to resist! Isn't Koko wonderful? We all share in a group of incredibly talented friends including Zzzzzzzzap, LeeshaHarvey, MaryWin, slippereal, and on and on. Thank you for your perceptive comments! ~Jon
I had to go watch a few Nick Cave videos. He's great! Thanks for the comparison. I've got a six-year-old who seems to want to contribute, too... someday soon...
Very dark upbeat melody Jon :) I really enjoyed Sam's chorus ! The "I need to" part is chillingly fantastic. The sketches suit each segment of your song perfectly. 5***** + Fav :) ~Mary
Thank you Mary! I think Sam's vocals are the heart of the song - reverting as it were back to childhood innocence. So glad you stopped by and thank you for the stars & fav! ~Jon
If you go to my other song "Fair Dinkum" there are detailed instructions after the lyrics on how to ecode postings in stereo. It really adds a dimension, I think. Thanks for listening!
That's some great original music, really impressive, and the sketches are cool, good lyrics too! I guess there's not much else to say except that this is a really great video and I enjoyed it!
Hello Dave. Thank you very much for adding me to your playlist! I will have to look at the other videos there as they all seem very compelling. I appreciate your support! ~Jon
Jon, this is fantastic!! I agree with zzzzzzzzap... the song by itself is amazing (and wow, your production is top notch!), but the sketches take it to a whole other level!
So glad to see your comment here, Leesha! Thank you so much for the glowing endorsement! I've got tons of songs begging to be produced, but so little time (you understand). I am so happy to watch you bursting through in your music career!! God bless, Jon
Jon you are a trailblazer and this is undoubtedly feature-worthy. I feel honoured to have had a sneak preview but the sketches really add something. Seriously, my hat comes off to you Jon - you're a magician of sound and word. Peace
I think the sneak preview is all anyone will get from me on this! I haven't the resources to realize it fully. I like the raw quality of the pencil sketches - gives it immediacy, I think. It's a real treat to see you gracing the halls of YouTubedom again my friend! I hope you have been stockpiling new posts for us to enjoy! ~Jon
Hi Jess! I used Acid Pro software from Sony. It's basically a loop based compiler, but I use it as a straight multitracker as well. It is truely amazing how powerful it is, especially when armed with a hefty load of cool samples to paint with. The guitar and bass are live (along with the vocals of course). My son Sam's voice was such a godsend for this song - it is the core of its soul. You can download the mp3 on MySpace if you like. Thanks for the lovely comments! ~Jon
Thank you John! I respect your opinion highly! Yeah... I really wish I could get Sam to sing with me more, but his focus is on anime and video games... I appreciate your support! ~Jon
wow.. Jon! great work on music composition, these differents musical rythms and colours you put with notes, intonations and voiz (cute with your son).. and the lyrics!!! i love this cover my friend.. Your Buddy, Eric.
Hi Eric. I have been wanting to post this for a long time, but I did not know what sort of video to include. I hope the sketches work for you. Thanks for dropping by, Buddy! ~Jon
Fantastic production. Brilliant song really as it attacks each of our core. Everyone has a dark part we keep hidden, maybe even from ourselves-- thank a lot (said sarcastically) for making us look at it.
Gave me the heebeegeebees, this is so beautiful and dark and makes me want to scream! (this is good BTW), you should have Sam sing more :) if he sounded like this then, I bet he sounds great now!
I like dark sounding music. It lodges deeper into your psyche, I think. Though this song seems sad, it actually is a song of hope. Sam still has a lovely voice, but I cannot get him to sing with me anymore (teenage rebellion?). Thanks Michelle! ~Jon
It seems this deep and dark American gothic hymn could have been called "Remorse" rather than "Restitution." Either way I like it for the Edgar Allan Poe feeling I get from it. "Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of men?"
"Restitution" because the message is about righting the wrongs to the best of our abilities. Not an easy task, and I fall far short of this goal. Still, it is something to aspire toward. Thank you. ~Jon
Ha - of course I've used plenty of artistic license here. Still we all have our demons, and all of us are in need of salvation. Scares the crap outta me, too! Thanks. ~Jon
Wow, what a cool tune, Jon! Just went to your myspace and downloaded the MP3, really cool vid, too, I don't know if you'll have any takers because the visuals are excellent and fit and it'd be really hard to do better,
What a great thing to say! Still, I'd love to see other peoples' take on this. I'll have to post the link to my MySpace page here so others can find it easily - thanks! ~Jon
Thank you Uboniuz! I wish I had spent a bit more time on a few of the drawings, but then... I'm lazy and impatient. Thanks for the great comments! ~Jon
It also sounds kind of like Nick Cave's Red Right Hand. You should look it up if you haven't already heard it.

Wow! This is one very interesting song!
I love the child's voice singing on the chorus. That is a stroke of genius :)
When are we ever more child like and vulnerable than when asking for forgiveness?
I like this song very much, as well as many others here :)
Very thought provoking lyrics in all of your songs.
