  • that would be a great set-up to practice public speeches!

  • The mother on the other end is actually Martin Scorscese's mom haha.

  • 1:17 Anyone else get the feeling Marty Scorsese is borrowing something from his own childhood here? I mean, he's even gotten his own mother to do the voice of Rupert's mom.

    Hilarious stuff.

  • After you watch this a plethora of De Niro's early films (mid-to-late 70s) as well as his stuff in the 90s you MUST agree that his is truly a king among commoners in the realm of acting. Not just an actor given a script playing themselves time after time but a man who can embody a role and really take it to great heights. THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!!!!!!

  • This film is GOOD. Its not a dark comedy in my opinion, its more of a tale of a pathetic psychopath seeking fame. It can be hard to watch (overbearing at times) and even a tad bit strange but its a fantastic film overall. I never know Scorsese made such a diverse range of pictures before i saw this. I don't recommend it for the 'action film fanatics' or anyone sole interested in the gangster type films. Watch it if you can think outside the box and appreciate the unorthodox

  • thumbs up for O&A!!

  • great film

my only problem with this film is that everyone calls it a comedy- its not. its not even a dark comedy, its just flat out sad

its great and it had a few funny moments, but i still found it painful to watch because the characters are just so pathetic and sad it made me want to cry

if that makes you laugh, you must have some strange sense of humor that i will never understand

  • compare this with jake la motta in raging bull and tell me he's not a great actor - and by actor i mean a real actor an artist a creator of characters not a personality tat pays themselves in every film like that idiot australan actor from Avatar

  • @archangul I know some people might bite my head off for this, but like John Wayne... c'mon, let's face it, he was a real legend, but even he admitted most everybody he played was just another version of him.

  • @moviehypno23 Exactly - humphrey bogart aswell lol

  • MOOOOOOOOOOOOM

  • It was only after he makes his debut on Jerrys show and does his monologue that I realize that it was all in his head. His mother is dead. ...I want to cry no I want to sob!!

  • the silent little huff he does right before he starts recording again is one of the funniest mannerisms ever filmed

  • one of the best de niro character

  • One of my personal favorite movies.

  • He has a LITERAL echo chamber. How do people not love this movie?

  • @jeremycarrier

i'm not sure....it's truly one of the best all-time.

  • @chefkurts This one and Bringing out the Dead I think are his most underrated. Maybe just because they're not about gangsters, lol.

  • The King of Comedy, the most underrated Scorsese film.

  • Next to raging bull, this for me is De Niro's best performance.

  • @matrags Scorsese considers it De Niro's best performance under his direction.

  • De Niro at his best!

  • and everyone wants to start at the bottom because?

  • 1:28 -1:40 amazing,

  • Comment removed

  • i mean to himself*

  • i think because hes a standup thats why he has to talk to himself into a microphone

jim carrey used to write checks to him for millions of dollars before he became famous

  • lol liza minelli there

  • That last shot is brilliant. As the camera pulls back it becomes clear that that's not at all part of his room, but the white walls of an insane asylum.

  • Most don't know it, but this is actually Deniro's greatest performance, and Scorsese's best movie.

  • Gangs of New York is better, but this is a close 2nd.

  • hahahah..... Good one!

  • love scorcese's mom, so cute!

  • True fact-the voice of Rupert's mom is Scorcese's mother......brilliant !

  • She also makes brief appearances in Good fellas and Casino.

  • this reminds me of the scene in taxi driver, when travis is on the phone.

    it is really lonely.

  • hes not a psychopath

    hes determined

  • I believe the term is "sociopath." Yes, he's determined, but, I mean, really, the guy's nuts.

  • @LazlosPlane

How is he any more nuts then people who go on reality TV shows?

  • he's a sociopath.

  • @b3rs3rk : no, if he were determined he would be willing to start at the bottom. He's deranged. He literally can't separate, or chooses not to separate, reality from fantasy.

  • @b3rs3rk Yes. A psychopath is incapable of normal feelings for other people. The problem with Pupkin is he has too many feelings for people that don't return them.

  • @b3rs3rk Or delusional.

  • De Niro did an excellent job of creating a loser that wasn't a nerd, a geek or a social outcast, just your average stalking psychopath.

  • @kingcaesar5 - and there are plenty of Rupert Pupkins out there!

  • MA!

  • Wow. That little opening message to Jerry (and Jerry's assistant Kathy Long), that Rupert recites into the tape recorder makes one want to CRINGE. ("but now I know from experience those people are just cynics embittered by their own failures", "you are as human as the rest of us, if not more so", "so close your eyes, imagine its exactly 6 o'clock, youre standing in the wings and we hear lou brown and his orchestra strike up your theme song", etc., etc.) Rupert is seriously deluded.
