When people are very... lets call it concerned... with a topic, they start applying that to anything. Even something only very tangentially related. If someone spends a lot of time thinking about, lets say, dolphin safety, they might have responded with "Oh, they care about humans, but not the poor dolphins getting killed by the ship screws!"
Of course, it helps if the person is also an idiot, and needs to post the first thing that comes to their mind.
@AtheistCitizen I think any discussion of government legislation vs education in the face of maritime disasters and maritime law is off-topic trolling, but I imagine those paultards and their supporters disagree.
It's my experience that many "Randians" don't know what "disingenuous" means. IMO Randianism is based on the same old hero worship that gave us Christianity. As I understand "The Fountainhead" it's only the exceptional individual who can make a difference so the highest ideal to aspire to an egocentrism which borders on megalomania.
@colourmegone I'm not to sure about it being hero worship, the way i see it is that they believe themselves to be the exceptional individual, so it is more a religion of self aggrandizement.
cant listen to this, the "music" is really annoying, almost as annoying as people who want to lay gobs of text to read over the video while trying to listen to the dialog. Meh.
@FSAthe1st As I said, the "supeficial" aspect I pointed out made it a chore to actually listen to your points. Ive seen alot of people talking about this topic, not just on here, and all I have to say is the captain was wrong taking the boat where it's almost guaranteed to wreck and endangering the lives of the passengers. I think the idea that any captain "must go down with the ship" runs counter to self preservation. Most of us would jump ship, regardless of our title.
@proximoto "I think the idea that any captain "must go down with the ship" runs counter to self preservation."
Yes, but no-one is saying that a Captain committing suicide is a mandate of the job... Only that he remain on board until the last possible moment rather than be a pussy and jump off ship at the earliest convenience and then refuse to get back on the ship afterward.
"Most of us would jump ship, regardless of our title."
Which is why most of us should never have that responsibility.
The cruise line shouldn't have hire a awful captain and the captain shouldn't have been an idiot. The captain is responsible for the safety of those passengers. That's his job.
It's not a matter of legislation. End of story. Every paultard should stop using copy-paste logic. You and Paul are an embarrassment to libertarianism.
@FSAthe1st No, I was talking about the guy you were replying to. He's an embarrassment to libertarianism. He make the sane ones look bad. I know you're not libertarian.
@roboticterror "The cruise line shouldn't have hire a awful captain-"
Watch the video again. You might have caught the part where I explained that people who do not wish to draw attention to cavalier attitudes and incompetence often do what they can to disguise it. It's not always possible for an organisation to know they've hired a moron until it's too late.
@jarjarbinks77 "I saw something recently saying the ship may have had damaged steering before the accident occurred, did anything even come of that?"
It was from what I recall, an excuse that the Captain wanted to have Costa Cruises tell the world happened. They refused to do so and told him he had to admit his culpability in navigating the ship where it went.
An official investigation into the disaster will probably reveal that it was undamaged, but that's speculation on my part. We'll see.
@BeekersSqueakers I modified it heavily using a phaser audio effect while using it as a background track... But it's Apocalypse off of the BSG The Plan soundtrack album.
Next time I'll try a much lower audio level for any background melodies in my videos.
The "libertarian model" such as it is, also does not require that people understand every aspect of every ship. A libertarian would trust the standards of the captain and crew to the cruise line to regulate solely, and as this captain failed to meet those standards as well... such a dramatic failure at being relevant. It's no wonder that guy is having trouble finding a chair.
@Jermbot15 This is why I think he's worse than the worst Randroid I've ever come across... And as much as I disagree with strict Minarchist Libertarianism, I understand that they wouldn't advocate the kind of nonsense this guy did.
@FSAthe1st Isn't there an argument to be made that having an independent entity checking and enforcing some sort of minimum safety stander allows for smother chase flow for companies by way of consumer confidence, and lets not ignore the ethical concern when your business model has the potential of putting peoples lives at risk.
@TheHolySTD That's certainly an argument to be made... The independent entities that check the safety standards will also need a baseline for comparison. What is actually expected. That takes not only expert knowledge of the field they are checking, but the legislative power to enforce said safety standards. That's what people who think the way this guy does don't seem to realise.
This is to say nothing about making sure people are properly qualified.
A good analogy here is that of thinking people ought to look up the driving record of the bus driver of any bus they ever get on. Hell I would even say that that is more reasonable than his assertions. Bus accidents are fairly commonplace esp when compared to cruise line accidents due to negligence, which are exceedingly rare.
JSYK, the music in the background of this video is a bit overbearing and gets a bit irritating after a while. May be worth toning it down a tad in future.
That's fucking nonsense the passengers could go further according to this troll, they could just owned their own private cruiser or even better their private jet or helicopter. @FSAthe1st i like feeding the trolls once in a while, just because they amuse me, but i think you fed him to much now. Cheers in any case m8, loving your vids a whole lot :)
Next time I get on an airplane I'll have to remember to interview the pilot crew first. Personally, I think the air/cruise line has a better screening process than any I could devise when they hire the pilot/captain in the first place.
@lychanking "Ron Paul might not be the best candidate but he's hardly worse than any of the others."
Which really doesn't say much about the current state of American politics. For the record, Ron Paul has already espoused biblical Creationist leanings, which alone is enough to lose him any vote I might have been legally allowed to make if I were a US citizen.
Worse than that, he seems to be such a strong follower of Ayn Rand philosophies that he named his son after her.
@FSAthe1st "Worse than that, he seems to be such a strong follower of Ayn Rand philosophies that he named his son after her."
Ayn Rand believe the government was lying when they said that tobacco was bad for you. She believed that no corporation would knowingly make a product that was dangerous for their customers. She was a lifelong smoker and died of lung cancer.
Given all of that, her philosophy should have died with her.
@lychanking "he's hardly worse than any of the others."
There is one thing that I think is never brought up in the discussion around Ron Paul and that is the problem of aligned interests, his good ideas have little to no support and have major players who would work against him, his bad ideas would have major players supporting them and has few who would stand in opposition to them. that is juts my sense of the situation
@TheHolySTD I've seen some of Ron Paul's better ideas. I agree with him on the war stance. He has many times (if I recall correctly) called for the withdrawal of troops from overseas.
I think America has a right to defend its' borders, not the right to enter foreign territory. Surely re-deploying those troops within the USA would bolster their lines of defence? But that's another issue from the one in this video.
Maybe the Captian had fallen victim to liberal moral depravity and that's why abandoned ship instead of staying to help. Yeah, that's it!!! BLAME THE LIBERALS!!!! After all, they already figured out they can blame pedophile priests on the immoral liberal culture too.

Don't expect government to take care of you!
It is the responsibility of every cruise ship passenger to x-ray test every weld on the ship to for structural integrity.
Each passenger must personally interview, polygraph and back ground check each and every crew member from the janitors to the captain.
Each passenger must personally test and check each and every life jacket, life boat and verify food safety in the kitchens.
All this is just common sense!
Government no!
Personal responsibility Yes!
