  • If you listen to "Speed Bonnie Boat Like a Bird on the Wing" you'll see where Jay Chattaway got the inspiration from.

  • words cant evern describe this.. its so amazing...

  • @SuperSteuben Thanks so much! I'm glad you like it.

  • Walt Disney would have loved this piece for "Fantasia" - it is just what he was looking for: visualized music!

  • I will have this stuck in my head for a good month or two now . . . I love it!

  • 8 people are Star Wars fans who spend all day listening to MIDI remixes of "Across the Stars."

  • Is there a chance a person could get an MP3 of this song? It's stuck in my head!!! I love it, and your arrangement!

  • @bildo3937 Hi. Sure! You can either send me your email address and I will send you the MP3, or you can use a free online converter (like video2mp3).

  • This is what epicness sounds like.

  • @kandstrom Well said! This is what epicness sounds like!

  • @kandstrom Ha, thank you. :-)

  • Thoroughly enjoyable.

  • @imafatbear Glad you like it. :-)

  • Beautiful arrangement of a beautiful piece. Thanks!

  • @Koorika Thank you!

  • Oh, how I would love to get an mp3 of this, would you be willing to send me one?

  • Does anyone know where i can fint the sheet music for clarinet this song???? Please! I've looked everywhere and can only find piano :(!!

  • the start of this tune is almost exactly the same as the skye boat song

  • Yes, the person who composed the full orchestral version of this derived it from an older Scottish tune, and that tune itself may have been a variant of Skye Boat Song. There was some discussion of that a while ago in the comment thread but I can't find it now!

  • Very interesting!!!!

  • Great job! I hope that a quintet gets the chance to play it some day.

  • I will post a live version as soon as someone records one :-)

  • Can anyone tell me If I can get this song as as ring-tone. Thanks

  • Definitely. Just send me your e-mail address in a private message and I'll send you the MP3. I think there are also some free programs that allow you to rip MP3s from YouTube videos.

  • oh wow i dont know what to say...thats so nice..yes i would love to hear that version....I would very much appreciate if you could send it ....again thank you ...you are so talented and sweet for doing that....count me one of your biggest fans....!!

  • thank you for your response NewEdit617...I would be so happy to find a musicbox with this song on it....If you compose it Please post it for your subscribers like me who enjoy your music... thanks

  • Hi!

I tried this out with Finale's music box, glockenspiel, celesta, vibraphone, etc. None of them sound very good :-( The notes don't extend so there is a lot of empty space. I could still make an MP3 for you and e-mail it, though... let me know!

  • I also must disagree with the guy who hates midi..I think that it;s a lovely piece done well...I would also love to hear this on a music box.. so sweet...I guess that it's just not his cup of tea....sad , but he is entitled to his opinion ,and I mine...thats what makes the world we live in so very unique and wonderful

  • The program I use to compose does have a music box setting, so in the coming weeks I will see how it sounds :-)

  • this is really cool. I'm sorry, I have to disagree with the guy who said Midi is the lowest form of music... midi can sound good, as evidenced by this piece. well done.

  • Thank you! I thought these Finale MIDI instruments sounded pretty realistic. Even so I'd like to have a real group record this :-)

  • Finale's MIDI quality is kind of limited. In this example of MIDI, there is no phrasing, it sounds choppy, and not much like a clarinet. Sorry. But if you can get a clarinet group together, go for it.

  • well done

  • Thanks!

  • Nicely done.

  • Thank you!

  • I'm sorry, am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a shoddy midi?

Nicely put together and all - but it's a MIDI! They're the lowest form of music on earth! 53 Dogs Barking make a nicer noise than ANY midi generator!

  • Yes, it is a MIDI with VST instruments. I haven't had a live group record it yet.

  • I cannot remember the name of the episode, but I remember that there is one where Picard plays a tiny wind instrument, while another character plays a keyboard. The only specifics I remember are that they once practiced in some engineering tunnels (or whatever) inside the ship because it had the best acoustics. Do you know if this song is from that episode?

  • The episode you refer to is called "lessons" where he shared the music he learned "The Inner Light".. Think it was in Season 6 or 7...

  • Thank you for answering!

  • Anytime. Keep up with the great work....

  • YouTube video 6su9jVj_pXY has Picard and Neela playing it together. That was from episode "Lessons." Thanks to briscoejr1 for finding the answer.

  • It's pretty good, but near 3:40 when you have the melody and a harmony line by themselves, be careful about parallel fifths. They really stand out. Otherwise, pretty good.

  • what does that mean?!?!?

  • A perfect fifth is the interval between a note and the note seven half-steps above it (for example, C with G, D with A). A parallel fifth, or consecutive fifth, is when a perfect fifth is followed by another perfect fifth. For example, if the melody moves from C to D in the flute, the harmony would move from G to A in the oboe line. For some reason this is not considered good form in classical music, but it is widely used in vocal pop music. In 3:40+ in this song, the flute and oboe

  • move consecutively in fifths... I rather like how that sounds, though, even though it's considered substandard for classical music.

  • thank you!!!! :)

  • We played this in symphony back in '97 or '96. That was one of my favorite pieces to play.

  • This is really great!! I would love it if you could email me the sheet music. If you have it written down. I am in band and we have a chamber music society and I think it would be septacular if we played this!!

  • how about you play each of the instruments separatly, record and then put together

    thats what Mike oldfield does

btw %stars all the way nice job!

  • 5 stars srry

  • Thanks for your comments.

I only play oboe and recorder, and am at least somewhat familiar with flute and keyboard.

I think that with a piece like this it would be great to have a live recording by a complete quintet. There are a few groups who've promised a recording but so far I haven't received one. I'll contact you when I do! It should sound much better than this electronic format.

  • ★★★★★

  • Thank you! :-)

  • Very impressive... Love this music...

Jay Chattaway and all Star Trek Fans would be very proud....

  • Of all the arrangements I've made, this one does seem to be the most popular. Thank you for your kind words.

  • thanks for posting this! It's beautiful

  • lol Oops! Meant to say

    Very well done!!

  • Wow... Very well done?

How exactly did you do this?

  • Thanks!

I listened to the original orchestration many times and transcribed it into Finale. Then I opened that MIDI file in Music Animation Machine and did a screen-capture of the animation with CAM Studios. I imported the video and the MP3 into Windows Movie Maker and combined them.

  • It is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. I am pleased that someone could do it justice. I have tried to download it but cannot find it anywhere. Could you please tell me where i can get it?

  • Thanks for listening.

By download do you mean the MP3 or the sheet music? I have the MP3 on my website (link listed in video description; YouTube doesn't allow links in comments). Also please feel free to email me about the sheet music... do you have a quintet to play with?

  • wow. i love this piece. ive tried to find it but i cant. i play flute and french horn. not very good at french horn but im ok at flute. but i love this music! you should do something that you can play at a solo ensemble thing. i would totally get it. =)

  • Thanks.

Are you looking for solo music or ensemble music?

I remember the days of S&E... that was fun.

  • very nice piece!

  • could you exsplane a french horn in a woodwind quintet. (sorry for mispelled words)

  • This is the standard arrangement for a woodwind quintet. Even though a French horn is not a woodwind, the quintets are always Fl, Ob, Cl, FrH, and Ba.

  • thanks

  • i thought it was only wood winds wats up with the piano thing?

  • It is only woodwinds... I don't know what piano you are referring to. ?

  • Interesting piece.

  • hi newedit617 just sayin wow i heard this on st:tng i dont know how many times and still loved it this on the other hand each note unwrapped my very heart and soul i myself play clarinet not very good at it but i play it and was hoppin if you own a woodwind you and i could play a duet or two just wonderin thanks bye

  • Yeah, hearing on on ST:TNG makes it even better. There are some websites that have just the main melody printed on sheet music, in case you wanted to play it on your clarinet.

Yes, I do have an oboe and a recorder, but where do you live?!

  • With your permission and with the sheet music i can get a live recording of this. I am part of a college band that can record music. I can ask my director and see if he is up. then i will put the recorded music up on youtube and/or send the file to you.

  • That would be fantastic! I will send you a message about the sheet music.

  • Good arrangement, I would love to hear it with a live group though. An electric device lacks soul. Well done.

  • Definitely. I'm trying to convince the woodwind quintet I'm in to play and record it!

  • love it!

  • what type of program did you download to be able to do this?

  • Hi,

I used Finale to compose. YouTube won't let me post a link to their site in the comments, but just do a quick search for Finale and you will find their site with some free trial versions. I used freeware to make the dots (Music Animation Machine), and freeware to screen capture the animation (CAM studios).

  • I just heard a clip of "Scottish Fantasy" played by a violinist, and the intro to the music (the background orchestra) does play a tune exactly like the intro to this melody. as you say in regards to the Skye Boat Song tune, that probably was added to the intro of "Scottish Fantasy."

BTW, in relation to what you posted earlier about Music Animation Machine, the tune is reminiscent of a midi file (hearing the abrupt halts to the tune as a different one is played).

  • great visualization, would be awesome to hear this played as a quartet for real. what program did you use for the whole dots thing?

  • Thanks. The dots are from Music Animation Machine (freeware). There are a variety of visualizations from which to choose-- lines, bubbles, other shapes, etc. The program plays only MIDI files, though, so I then had to record the animation with CAM Studios and incorporate it with the MP3 using Windows Movie Maker.

  • Great video! I enjoyed how you were able to capture the different notes as different line angles/dots (it is easy to visualize the music better that way). This truly is beautiful. Is this by any chance the original "Sky Boat Song?"

  • The opening melody line does sound like "Skye Boat Song," doesn't it? Apparently Jay Chattaway, the person who first put this tune in to Star Trek TNG, arranged it from an excerpt of "Scottish Fantasy" by Max Bruch. I've not heard that one yet, but that would be the original!

  • Excelent. I admire you. Nice job.

  • Thank you for the compliment!

  • WOW!, well done, very well done.

  • Thanks!

  • well done!

  • Thank you :-)
