@KitchenSpeclol there really was; and even though fighters like Wand & Minotauro have relocated here to the US. That magic, work ethic in unison with the expert training camps & partners they possessed plentifully in Brazil etc. Just hasn't been duplicated here in the States.
along with the fact that they fight under the TERRIBLE "unified rules" SCAM now!
@judaschongo i agree. soccer kicks and stomps are "too brutal" in the US but yet you can turn your television on and see people getting chopped up, raped, you name it. such hypocracy. once MMA goes more mainstream in the US, they should go back to PRIDE rules, fuck the politicians and conservatives who say "its human cock fighting". its ok for them to support a war that they lied to us about in the first place, but its not ok to use soccer kicks when doctors are ringside lol.
@KitchenSpeclol it's hypocrisy to the MAX! yet they allow those maiming elbows that create fountains of blood? you can't help but wonder if the real reason for the "unified rules" is for the protection & aid their highly marketable mainly English speaking fighters.
@APotatoWithAGun I've been to that building! I've witnessed how they train and it was an awesome sight.
what a shame this criminal organization ufc, along with these awful commissions here Stateside & "unified rules" prevent fighters like Shogun & Wand from using their entire arsenal of 4point attacks etc.
because they can't use knee strikes on the ground or stomps? how many fights were won by them using these types of strikes compared to ones won with good boxing or clinch striking? i rest my case. i think stomps and knees to the head on the ground should be legalized in the ufc, don't get me wrong, but the best fighters in the world are in the UFC. And the mark of a true champion, like Shogun, is proven regardless of what federation he comes to because they can adapt to it.
dont rest your case, footstomps and soccer kicks were some of wanderlei's most reoccurring moves in pride and was extremely effective. lots of chute box training is based on valetudo rules competition
i agree that they were based on vale tudo rules, but to say that UFC is not MMA because they don't share the same set of rules is ridiculous. wandy won four of his forty-five fights using these strategies, besides that he just used his superior stand-up to win. anderson, shogun, ninja, thiago and gonzaga have all gotten along fine without using soccer kicks/stomps.
oh yeah i def didnt say it's not mma, pancrase even with it's many many rules, is still mma
but wanderlei used them in every single fight, and so did shogun back then, it's a specialty of chute boxe, but a good mma fighter can fight in every rule setting imo, like you are saying. it's not an excuse for bad performance. but i do think they could give a better performance under those conditions because they def train in them even tho ufc doesn't allow
yeah man, my bad . . . that was someone else on this page. i agree that they were definitely utilized by chute boxe fighters, but i think we agree that a true champion finds a way to win no matter what the rules.
@BIGJOHN3212 but why should they have to adapt to an inferior format is the point you don't ask yourself! Shogun won numerous encounters in which stomps & soccer kicks were an integral part of, knocking out or breaking the opponent down.
don't buy into that "ufc has the best fighters" mantra Vana white, ufc & co. would have his zombies mindlessly repeating? just consider this Strikeforce Heavyweight tourney?
ask yourself how their opponents get to a position where soccer kicks and stomps are utilized . . . answer . . . superior striking. in other words, guys like shogun and wanderlei's greatest attributes lie in their striking, which if good enough, can allow them to win anywhere.
i like the strikeforce heavyweight tournament. i think it's an interesting idea and a great way to bring strikeforce new fans. but what do you want me to consider about it?
@BIGJOHN3212 in the case of Shogun he has been able to successfully & systematically hold down larger & taller fighters, effectively heel striking & soccer kicking them in an uncanny & repetitive fashion. It's undeniable, Shogun is well above average in all departments; but it's not correct to over-simplify this issue by simply suggesting: "well he should be fine without them"?
PrideFC has been the most authentic venue for true MMA/ValeTudo to date! & Shogun has proven to have no equal there!
please. UFC has housed plenty of great fights in its day. Griffin/Bonnar has so much notoriety because it fueled the popularity of MMA in the US (but it was a damn good brawl).
also, you do realize elbows on the ground were illegal in pride right? but hey, . . . the UFC allows them. does that mean Pride wasn't MMA? of course not, they just wanted to minimize ground striking so fights would remain standing.
@BIGJOHN3212 elbows aren't the issue?? even Bas Rutten, BJ Penn, Rua just to name a few have been highly critical of them; in full agreement with me, on banning them on the ground altogether; not while standing though!
I don't see how you could make the claim that PrideFC wanted to minimize ground striking, to promote standing??
how could you even compare "elbows" to an entire arsenal of full-on 4point attacks??
also, i found it funny you wanted me to consider the "strikeforce heavyweight tourney". strikeforce is the most conservative of them all! they don't allow elbows, soccer kicks, or stomps.
if you're another anti-UFCer, then fine . . . you're entitled to your opinion. i also think the UFC is a monopolistic company. the reason they're so popular though . . . is because they house the best fighters on their roster, market aggressively and setup excellent fights for people to watch
@BIGJOHN3212 I agree MMA in this country is very watered down & corrupted. But IMO Strikeforce actually has it correct by banning "elbows" on the ground; all they contribute to is maiming fight compromising gashes, seldom leading to clean KO's. Other than that; ufc & Strikeforce are interchangeable.
just curious what excellent fights have U seen from ufc lately, or in general?
seriously? elbows on the ground allow people such as wrestlers, judokas and jiu-jitsu guys to setup submissions. if you want "vale tudo" rules, then why not allow them? i'd much rather take an elbow to the head than a knee on the ground.
sanchez/parisyan, sanchez/guida, ebersole/lytle (very recent), liddell/silva, condit/macdonald (recent), st.pierre/fitch, sylvia/couture, diaz/davis (recent), hughes/penn II, bonnar/griffin (gotta love a brawl), noguiera/couture, leites/marquardt, sonnen/silva (recent), leben/simpson (recent), sanchez/stevenson, arlovski/werdum . . . i mean . . . these are ones off the top of my head that i remember.
@BIGJOHN3212 not to belittle or berate U but you just named off a bunch of skill-less garbage fights! anything with Sanchez & Guida is so 2nd rate & overrated; Bonnar vs Griffin?? Vana white's favorite. Sylvia vs Couture was a lay-n-pray snooze fest. GSP vs Fitch? didn't see it, & don't even wanna waste my time. Arlovski vs Werdum? U really think that was a great fight? Nogueira was a true Champion & a Great but his fight vs Couture was a bit painfully past each others prime's.
jesus man. you just refuse to give the UFC any credit while I've already stated that Pride was a great organization with a lot of memorable fights and fighters.
so obviously we just need to agree to disagree so people won't have to see us bicker because we obviously just view MMA differently.
@BIGJOHN3212 Hughes vs Penn 2 was somewhat decent; but their 1st encounter was actually better & better difined. Liddell vs Silva would of been so much better in PrideFC rather than under the "unified rules". If you've seen that fight you'd know that 4point attacks could of been successfully employed by Silva on the moment Chuck lost his footing fell on his ass. Could of been an entirely different fight in Japan; superior in other words.
@BIGJOHN3212 you wrote "gotta love a brawl" which leads me to believe that that's the only style you have a penchant for. Bonnar vs Griffin?? really! like that's the best example of a brawl? what about Hunt vs Wand, Hendo vs Wand 1&2, Gomi vs Azeredo 1&2, Pulver vs Gomi! those were wars with tremendous skill levels being displayed.
Unlike those other 2 buffoons lacking enough power to knock each other out.
sorry don't wanna sound condescending but that's just the way it is!
if you watched some of the fights i referred to you would know a brawl is not the only thing i enjoy watching. also, while bonnar and griffin may not have great KO power, they do have a lot of heart and solid chins . . . so yeah . . . a brawl is what i call that fight.
the days of pride are long gone and most of their fighters have either slipped into obscurity or are starting ir already have washed-up . . . "don't mean to sound condescending but that's just the way it is!"
