How could anyone do anything but preserve a place of such splendor? The entire situation makes me feel very depressed and sick to my stomach. The world died a little more when those beautiful statues fell.

Im Japanese Buddhist. In my country we learned about Ancient Iranians, Afghans, Pakistanis who were peaceful, brightest, enlightened people in the world. They used to be called Parthians, Ghandarans, Kushans. They taught the China & Japan about Buddhism. I love Iran, Afghan and Pakistan that was peace, love and enlightened countries. They were center of Buddhism in the past. Chinese & Japanese owes them thanks. But now Im sad to see they hate their own culture. I wish they become Buddhist again.

He was a Persian ex-prince who became a Buddhist monk, he is named An Shigao in China. This Persian is still honored by Chinese and Japanese people. We really respect your great enlightened ancestors, and hope the present day Persians can also find enlightenment and peace.

But today they are not allowed to study Buddhism because its considered "APOSTASY" and according to Islamic Sharia Law they would be KILLED for trying to leave Islam! There is no religious freedom in Afghanistan, so Buddhists would have to hide themselves, or lose their lives! Such a sad situation isnt it?

@FKhorasani87. We Buddhists honor An Seikou (An Shigao) who was Parthian-Iranian prince who gave up his crown to devote life to peace and translated Sutras from Sanskrit to Chinese. He was first person in recorded history. After him came many others. The most important was Kumarajuu (Kumarajiva) who translated the Lotus Sutra. They were from Central Asia, mixed-Indians and Iranians etc. They were responsible for establishing foundations of Chinese-Japanese philosophy. We will never forget them.

Taliban weren't/aren't afghans. They are mostly foreigners.. They use the name of religion to abuse this country. Besides, it's not Islam that says to carry such acts.. it's a few Muslims who have taken things out of context or whatever personal reasons.. @rahul1116 Jizya is a tax in Islam for non-Muslims which is much lower than the tax for Muslims which is Zakaat..And it is only collected from working adult male members of the family..Every govt has the right to collect tax for running the State..Muslims had to pay more because it was their religious duty..

The Bamiyan valley must have been absolutely lovely once – a lush mountain paradise with beautiful statues carved in the living rock, where people of different cultures could meet, trade, learn from one another, and establish lifelong friendships. How could anyone do anything but preserve a place of such splendor? The entire situation makes me feel very depressed and sick to my stomach. The world died a little more when those beautiful statues fell.

They used to be called Parthians, Ghandarans, Kushans. They taught the China & Japan about Buddhism. I love Iran, Afghan and Pakistan that was peace, love and enlightened countries. He was first person in recorded history. After him came many others. The most important was Kumarajuu (Kumarajiva) who translated the Lotus Sutra. They were from Central Asia, mixed-Indians and Iranians etc. They were responsible for establishing foundations of Chinese-Japanese philosophy. We will never forget them.

In India, Muslims and Hindus used to live together peacefully and this is probably why Hindus didn't overthrow their Muslim Kings for over six centuries but revolted against British in just a few decades and overthrew them..Hindus never accepted British rule..
You need to understand is who benefited from these Hindu-Muslim rivalry stories

@nilo723 the only idols you should be breaking are those idiots on the talent quest shows, Afghan Idol, Indian Idol, Australian idol etc. In the Qur'an Sharif, the surah Al Tariq it says "leave the unbelievers alone"
That is saying show tolerance and understanding!.
The Hadiths says if you must go to China to seek knowledge then go . It doesn't say go to China and blow up all of the Buddhist icons ( that they 1st got the idea from, from the Kushans).

@taariqtaariq thats true but afghanistan was a muslim state not an occupied state or a buddhist state. When Makkah was conquered all the idols were destroyed because Makkah had become an islamic entity same is the case here !!!
