Can you tell me if you had the problem where half life will run, you hear the music, can hear the menu options as the mouse moves over them but you see nothing but black? I have no idea what to do and I'm not very advanced with ubuntu.

It look like you don't have MP3, WAV, or WMP plugin installed. you have to download to got sound.
