@azu0nyan As far as I know, the stone was a naturally occurring formation. Such as "God's Thumb" - just a rock that happened to look like something, in this case a face. Stanley had luck with finding interesting things, like the fish fossil and lipstick tube, so he likely just found the rock interesting and wanted to keep it. Because of its unique shape, it ended up becoming the marker so they knew which hole had Kate's buried treasure when they came back to it later.

@fabihanski there is an actual variety of lizard they call yellow spotted lizards, yes. But they're not as deadly as what you see in "Holes." They used a harmless variety of bearded lizard and painted the spots on them for the film. :)
