Funny thing is that when the castle first opened in 1963 and they invited Jay Ose and Dai Vernon to be the resident magicians at the castle, they actually did live in the tower until several years later Dai rented an apartment nearby and jay Ose passed away. I wish I were around in those days-with regular hangouts like Harry Blackstone, Dai Vernon, Charlie Miller, Dai's student Larry Jennings, Jay ose, andwhen it was run by Bill larsen-that was golden age of magic & the magic castle
When the Castle opened, Jay was the bartender and Resident Magician. He liveed upstairs in what was later the Dining Room. Dai Vernon (who Jay idolized) followed as did Al Goshman.
I've been to the Magic Castle. Bill made it sound like just anyone off the street could go in and watch. Not true. To even get in to see the shows and mingle, you have to be invited by a MEMBER of the Magic Castle that has you put on a guest list under their name at the front door. At least, that's how it was, maybe, 17 to 20 years ago.
I was there the other night. The food still sucks and is grossly overpriced. They even charged extra for bread! Rip off. Of course the club itself is great in terms of entertainment.
I've always loved Bill Bixby and this show. When I saw it again on the Sci-fi Channel, I called Paramount and asked them if there was a real Magic Castle. They said yes and told me the address. You know I went. I took a class in Magic and now I am an Apprentice Member.I must go back and take the advance course then audition to become a Magician member. More benifits. It is a really cool place.

Being a Magician was REALLY RARE back in those days. Now its like who's not a magician:

It may seem like that on YouTube, but IRL magicians are still pretty rare (compared to, say, amateur musicians).
