so much respect earned tb... like +1000, means nothing to anyone but its great to hear a person break down the arguments against gaming (not just wow, i personaly cant stand the game but understand MMO's because i play most noatably Maplestory) and show the faults and holes int them. if this was shown to the world i think (WARNING POOR ESTIMATION AHEAD AND IS IN NO WAY A FACT) 45% of people would at least have a changed opinion for the better about gaming (and yes wow as well)
I came on here expecting to skip through and randomly watch certain points, but this talk was so great, I watched the whole thing through in one go. So awesome TB :)
TB, you seems like you enjoy your work so much here. I think it's probably due to stress, and despite the fact that I'd love to see about 15 videos a day from you I wish you would take far more breaks to allow you to become happier and have less stress in your life.
I know he is the "Cynical" brit but back when he did his first videos and up in to the early Mailboxes he seemed really happy. Most of the time now he just sounds depressed
i facepalmed the moment he said 'a current affair'. that programme is notorious in Australia for being sensationalist trash that is only watched by old people.
Just wanna say that I already respected you a lot before watching this video, but my respect level for you has definitely increased at least three times over.
Ha, my dad used to try and say I was addicted back in EQ days. He's finally SORT OF getting it, 10 yrs later
Anyway, hearing another educated person speak on it made me feel better about my choice to try to make a career on YT/twitch in the near future. Since I've got the time and can't find a job as it is... damn economy. Thanks TB ^_^
He must have been really well prepared, and having tought about a lot of the arguments and possible questions. This is probably one of the most sensible videos I've seen on YouTube.
@Craziguy33 Hehe, I'm just kidding really. I've played wow since release, and I quit playing last expansion. I loved the game, but they have lost their touch. I agree, people should play whatever they want, we're supposed to have fun playing games :>
I love MMO's. I'm playing one right now. But the problem is, development which is so attractive and easy to see in a MMORPG, often overrides that desire to better oneself in the real world. It is a time sink, and you do learn useful skills, true, but all those skills are better learnt where they can be directlty applied to the real world.
As in, Playing football with a team, you have to synchronise with everyone, or they are all pissed at you too. But you also develop more skills at the same tim
@gmjonte Unless you have something to back up your evidence towards the millions of people who don't think its boring, you should probably keep your opinion to yourself.
Please everyone don't think any worse of us Australians, A Current Affair is a disgrace, there is no journalism involved, it is meant for the entertainment of the weak minded.
@xgusROX "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones..." Most of the people who, if any, that would think worse of Australians would be the Americans.
The only reson i started playing wow was becouse my friends played it. The game was awesome untill they stopt playing. Then i thought the game was incredible boring.
@eternity899 Try to prove him wrong then if you can, there is no such thing as addiction involved in games because when you're talking about addiction you are reffering to a chemical change in your body and/or brain. A game only provides entertainment for you to experience, and experiencing that is not an addiction.
@ZeMagicalPot And what IS "entertainment", its chemicals. A change in the body is not a sign of addiction in itself, its the reaction of the body to the environment its in. "Addiction" is just a word to describe a strong desire to do something, its based on the pleasure you get from an action you take, the more you do it the more pleasure it gives you and the harder you want it, its only a matter of time to reach a point when you wouldnt be able to survive without that action.
@ZeMagicalPot And what IS "entertainment", its chemicals. A change in the body is not a sign of addiction in itself, its the reaction of the body to the environment its in. @eternity899 Well, what is I drink alcohol each night? People wont say shit, and it is really harmful. Gaming is a hobby. A point I wanted to make for a long time. It is not in anyway harmful, unless you are pants on head retarded.
This is so true, people think that if people keep playing WoW that they are addicted to it. We keep playing the game because it has NO END, it's a hobby. If other things like books had no end, would you say that those people reading them are addicted too, because they enjoy reading them? I'm 14 years old and english isn't the main language in my country, but WoW helpt me SO MUCH in improving my english.
TB you are the most inspirational person i have every heard after this it really changed the way i viewed things, while i had some of these basic principles before you changed my entire view on not just mmos, but things that change in general. I also believe, like most people i know and am friends with, that the media is really ruining community and it needs to stop, and i realise that i am commenting on a video that is 5 years old at this time, but these issues are still here today and worse.
@Zeghart I suppose you could look at it like that, but I see it as a good thing that things haven't changed. The great community is still there, and people like TB are definately still out there.
WoW has helped me alot through school belive it or not.. it was actually the thing that learned me alot of my english rather then the class for it self and TB have an incredible valid point in this what so ever.. wow aint no damn addiction!
I was so incredibly impressed by this I don't even know what to say. It's nice to see this argument well executed, with humor, and not as a derogatory beat down to others. Well, mostly. Well done, friend. I tip my top hat to you.
It feels like John from today is so much different from his younger self, but still has the same knowledge and intellect from before. I can't really explain it better..
