It does not look like he was bridging and trying to elbow escape at the same time, or trying to tread a knee through, but the dad did maintain the mount really well
I use it still, along with other things like crossing my feet behind the butt, switching to half mount, etc...depending on the opponent. If I am rolling with a newbie, like my son..grapevines work just fine.

I think the grapevine technique is kinda amateur but still pretty effective.
