it's funny coz when you watch interviews with the who to this day they basically say they didn't give a shit about mods or anything else they just tailored to their audience
by the simple fact that what he was playing there in the studio was different to the backing track being broadcast on tv. We are most likely hearing the latter rather than the drumming we are seeing.
This doesnt seem live, but it isnt the original studio version either. I think the vocals are sung live on air, but over a backing track recorded earlier specifically for the show. So Daltrey is singing live, but the rest are miming their instruments. They did this quite often on these shows.
From 1:01 to 1:55 is the best live performance i ever seen on UK TV. The second best is The Stone Roses singing Waterfall live on Other Side of Midnight, Tony Wilsons old show...Both videos show bands at the top of their game.
@DoctorBohr No what i meant was that this was on a different planet to what was around just 3 or 4 years earlier in the very early sixties. The musical change from the early to mid sixties still seems incredible to me,i envy those who were there to see it.
I was 13 in 65', probably a year away from getting into the Who, but it's safe to say that there weren't any bands back then playing like this. The Stones had a fairly hard edge but nowhere near as heavy of a sound. The Who!
Also, the cameramen knew how to get with a band in those days. Check how the camera is just being shook from side to side and up and down to convey to the kids at home the excitement in the studio.

I think it is funny how Pete played so many kinds of guitar. Normally a guitar player might play two types of guitars based on the feel of the song but Pete played everything. dont quote me on this but i think the who were banned from this show after moonie acted in an obnoctious way to cathy mc gowan...slag deserved i think !
For 1965, its unbelievable. Listen to what he's doin' on the guitar. If the Rolling Stones were the antithesis of the Beatles, what on earth is this?! The Beatles / feedback invention / I feel fine? Don't make me laugh!
''What's this rubbish then?'' I said to my son.
He replied back with: ''Ready Steady Go''.
''Ready Steady Go? I can sing better than him,'' I replied.
He then started impersonate the drummer of the band by playing air drums.
''Is that how you play a guitar nowadays?'' I said to my son as i saw the guitarist playing bthe instrument strangly.
My son ignored me and turned the tele up higher.
''That'll make you deaf you know,'' I said to my son Jimmy.

The only time Keith Moon was not on fire was when he was asleep.....
and knowing him, even then he was smoldering.
The band never recovered from his untimely demise.

@DiggermanNo1 True. The Who ceased to exist the moment he died. Led Zeppelin knew that too about themselves when John Bonham was gone.

For 1965, its unbelievable. Listen to what he's doin' on the guitar. If the Rolling Stones were the antithesis of the Beatles, what on earth is this?! The Beatles / feedback invention / I feel fine? Don't make me laugh!
