In my book, all band members are very talented, I like Greg as much as I like John none is greater than the other. Oh and 2 more things, the stage you see is the stage they used back in the day. Also John himself is coming out with a new album called "THE GREATER CAUSE"
as i listen to all these songs i have forgotten i am struck by how the lyrics are so good and many of them if not all are good. that is a God-thing. huh. :) but i could be biased?
@TheJason5090 - It really is, i so agree. It was there for me a lot growing up and i got to share it with friends who lost parents back when i was just 15. I'm 42 now and it's just so good to hear them again! Let's see if i can get through w/o crying. I'm OK with some crying too. Wow i learned so much from these guys.. so, so grateful!!
Greg left Petra so He could spend more time with his family. He slso started his solo career with a less busy schedule of shows so could stay in the music ministry and still have time with his wife and kids
I couldn't agree more Both Greg and John are great singers I had the privilage of meeting them both and can tell they both Love the Lord and both Honor him
I am a friend of Greg Volz; known him for 20+ years, goes to my church. Before this tour kicked off, he told me that the guy they had given the 80s stage to still had it in storage & let them have it back for this tour. So that IS the same stage. I think it is cool!
Yes, it is about ministry first, but when there is no debate about pure vocal ability. GXV has much greater vocal ability and overall vocal range than JS, this cannot be argued. Go back and listen to the Captured in Time and Space concert with Volz, then listen to anything JS did and compare. I think you'll find that Volz has more talent vocally.

LOL..What's all these debates between John and Greg?
1)They have their own vocal styles and abilities.
2)Petra's music evolves from Petra to Never say Die to More Power to Ya to Beat The System to Back to the Street to Jekyll and Hyde.
If people just listen to their music from the beginning to the latest you will hear the difference from the 70's rock to mid- 80's keyboard laden tunes to heavy guitar riffs.
3) Can't you just be happy for them that they are doing this for the Lord?
for those of us with petra in the beginning in the 70s...gregg volz IS THE voice of petra and always will be...john schlitt cannot even sing next to him he is in an entirely different league
Just wanted to say; Greg has an amazing ability and has kept his voice incredibly well, but when John Schlitt was at his peak, he was outstanding - second to none. He has/had a resonance and warmth in his voice that sent tingles down my spine. His range - fantastic. John's voice is edgier - suited more to heavier music, but was able to create beautiful ballads. I would actually say that Greg is also second to none, just different. More power to both of them!! Exciting return of Petra!
Look, you are totally warping what this is about. It is exciting about this line-up returning and I guess one is loyal to the first line-up one saw, but John and Greg can do different things with their voices and that is cool. How would you feel if you had been asked to fill Greg's shoes, achieve a smooth transition with plenty success in your own right, then that be forgotten and have someone write you off like a bad odour. This talk makes me sad.
I dont know why the debate. Both John and Greg both had great qualitys with their styles. I first became a Petra fan during Beyond Belief album. I went back and started listening to old (and newer) petra stuff, didnt like Gregs vocals at first but after listening to him I warmed up and now absolutly love them in the Classic Petra Album. Greg's petra had a different style then John's but both together made a great legacy for Petra. I hope to see a reunion of the beyond belief petra as well!
I love Gregs voice but he has nowhere near the stage presence of schlitt. Schlitt had the animation that got the crowd going. I actually like Schlitts' raspy rock and roll vocals much better.
I totally disagree... I thought the first albums with schlitt was fine but the rest not. He's got a good voice but Schlitt is very 80s heavy metal, and I think they became more like an institution than a band during the 90's. Volz voice is timeless, and sounds awesome. This classic version of Petra is the real deal. Love this comeback and their new versions of great songs. Looking forward to seeing them live this summer. :)
@eareffect I absolutely agree with you that Greg's voice is timeless, and most likely better than shclitt's . However schlitts stage presence is much more electrifying than Voltz. That is all I was attempting to convey. Dont get me wrong, Rose colored stained glass windows is probably my favorite song from Petra. But if I had to choose between Voltz and Schlitt live I would choose Schlitt 9 out of 10 times.

Greg had been singing for 3 days straight so tracks were provided if needed, he fell back on those for a few songs and then went bk in and re-recorded live vocals. Guys, this aint a big deal! EVERY live album ever recorded was re-done vocally in post production! Greg has a massive 4 octave range. Operatic singers need multiple days off at times, give em a break for sure!
It's SO good to have PETRA back again singing the songs that are simply awesome. What Petra had become was not Petra so this is like a breath of fresh air. Also great to see Louie back where he SHOULD be! John Lawry is the man! With regards to using tracks....guys, everybody does to some degree. Petra are no different.
Yep and TY (ricanrolear) I was able to go on and hear it on another post with BOB HARTMAN describing how he got the stage back...lol... Amazing that BOB lived only a few hundred yards away from where they performed in the TBN Hendersonville Music City Concert. BOB said, if I remember correctly that he wrote two of the songs they performed in that concert in his nearby Hendersonville home. So Far this seems to be the BEST post of the concert in respect to both audio and video.I willBuyDVDthough
I agree scalenguy...givem a break. Petra is about ministry first and message. Yes, Soopahsoopah it does look like the beat The System Tour stage. Its very nice. The first time I saw Petra was in 1983, the year I got saved. It was at the Ohio State Theater. When they where on there Not Of This World Tour. So good to see them still in the race and fighting the good fight of faith! . May we all.
About the lip synching, if you are talking about Bob's vocal, I don't think he really has ever sung anyway, just looking the part. I personally know John and he was talking after the autograph session that he was glad Greg now uses in-ear monitors so he doesn't blow out his vocal chords. That pretty much indicated to me that Greg was live. And even if some of it were lip-synched, they are old and the cost of the TBN facility plus it will be aired world-wide... Give 'em a break.
I was at the concert and afterwards my wife thought that some of it was lip synced as well. I really hope that is not the case. If so, I did not pick up on it. I was enjoying myself too much to be worried about if it was being lip synced. I did catch Bob make a small mistake on Adonai, so I believe the music was all live at least. I really hope dihigo and my wife are wrong.
@madog34 i think like 60% of vocals were lipsynched, they post an explanation about this in the Classic Petra blog, you all should check it out, but im pretty sure all music was live.
@ricanrolear Thanks, I read the entire thread and that makes sense. I still thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would love to see them again on the tour. Hopefully they'll do some other songs on tour as well as stuff from the album.
@dihigo was it really lip synched? And if it was, was the entire concert lip synched as well? I was attempting to look closely and I have to agree with you about this possibility. My question is why would they fake their way through it. Aside from that was the song selection good, did they do "God pleaser?"
@1shnookste They did do "God Pleaser." The set list included all 12 songs off the new album. Nothing more. Nothing less. I had some concern half way through the concert that Greg was lip syncing. It became clear once I began looking for it. I'm not sure how much was lip synced as I only noticed it on the 3rd to last song and from then on out. When he'd talk in between songs, his mic was WAY down.
In my book, all band members are very talented, I like Greg as much as I like John none is greater than the other. Oh and 2 more things, the stage you see is the stage they used back in the day. Also John himself is coming out with a new album called "THE GREATER CAUSE"
