It's a superstition; when a team has scored 111, or multiples thereof (222, 333 etc), it's considered an unlucky number. In the part of England where Shep grew up in any case (Dorset).

Whilst the scoreboard is on that number, he, as the superstition requires, hops about a bit, presumably to dispel the, well, spell. I'd not heard about it myself until I saw it on telly. It's not an English thing, but a localised, Shep flavoured, English thing. What a character. Cricket will miss him. I do. RIP

I well remember my anticipation as the scoreboard edged towards 111, and another one of David Shepherd's skipping rituals. One of the last true characters of English Cricket. He'll be truly missed.
