  • ドナルド・フェイゲンらしい独特節回しの切ない哀愁曲"AnyMajorDudeWillTellYou"3作目S・ダン”プレッツェル・ロジック"の不思議モード、スカンクのギターもエロイ

  • Only 110,600 views? Criminal.

  • The sound of good times, as soon as it starts

  • great licks and tasteful arrangements aside, steely dan was always about the lyrics and this song is a standout in a long tradition of great lyrics

  • any major dude with half a heart...

  • to say this song saved my life would be a bit dramatic, but it did help enlighten me

  • @froggleg1 Funny how beautiful music has a habit of doing such glorious things... I find this song to be one of this bands' finest...

  • Hey steely dan telling you shit happens but it will work out ok with your friends help..whats not to like.

  • listen to the first few bars - these guys are soo gentle with the music...but so complex with the arrangement....the audience never notices.....ii am carried away every time i listen to Steely.

  • Time is alot of what I hear --when I was and I remember --This is the Dan have some respect.

  • uhmm samedwards...a Kiss song?? wo, you must be really snort-flying...Kiss does 3 chords with the ocassional minor and amps at 80 - 100 distortion/crunchy, Steely is 180 degrees from Kiss (that means totally different). No 4 pounds of greasepaint makeup.. no large hats.. no 3 foot tall boots...no flames onstage..OH Wait, I get it, youre one of those troll things?

  • @fuzzypige222 plus KISS are goddamn yankees . . .

  • @newfuckingwave Steely Dan were SoCal guys too...not sure what it has to do with kiss being americans..wtvr, this is awesome comforting social introspective life meaning and fun sounds forever

  • @fuzzypige222 Donald Fagen was from New York... born and bred... but they certainly sounded like they were from Southern Cal!

  • @deweypug thanks for taking the time to send me a hi.....Steely is one of the best of all time

  • This sounds like a KISS song

  • @samedwards196 Kiss my ass, this is the Dan have some respect.

  • I won't be born until November of 2053 and this song kicks ass.

  • @MisterGris The Shape of Things to Come- A history of the future. Dude.

  • 15cents for a pretzel? god those were the days 15 cents you can't even get gum

  • Top caliber Musicianship, writing, production and creativity, find any current artist with all of these attributes............... That's what i thought,......... goose eggs :)

  • my god, if this was released today it would shock the shit out of everyone.......so far above anything out there.....i miss these guys

  • this was the B side to Rikki dont lose that number, my first 45

    i love this song

  • my funky one :)

  • Any major mentor's mantra.

  • Any major dude will tell you modern music sucks.

  • Any major Diva will tell you that the Dan stands the test of time. This music is so

beautiful that it makes me cry . I feel for todays youth who may only get glimpses of such soul searching lyrics as these . These men were trully a blessing for the musical world in that time and thank God for modern technology , we all can still be enlightened by these brilliant Geniuses.

  • This song was made for walking through the streets of wintertime 1970s NYC, just BROODING about stuff.

  • @alexmortland Like the sentiment. Steely Dan seems tailor made to sooth the brooding spirit.

  • Genius is always underrated.... any major dude would tell you.

  • love this song...

  • The solo in this is only 25 seconds, but the phrasing is perfect - I often play it over and over

  • This song got me through many tough times...there was no one like the Dan and there never will be again...amazing tunes.

  • Driving in my 70 Javelin down back roads in Maryland going to college listening to Steely Dan was nothing more than pure heaven. Keeps a perspective on the world around you without you even knowing it.

  • Absolutely. Let no one speak otherwise in my presence either.

  • This song is a life changer. It made me a major dude. Thanks for the post.

  • when the demon is at your door,,knocking I LOVE THIS BAND for ever

  • This song, as magnificent and multi-faceted as it is, boils down to one simple word: Truth.

  • The one dislike must not be a major dude.

  • These creapy little easterners wrote the sound track to my life. I was the only one around me who liked the Dan which kinda gave me a weird spin in highschool, when no one else could even start to understand all the references. I more than made up for it in college, where it was starting to become super cool to be a Dan junkie. This meant I didn't have to hide away to listen to the Dan. I loved the attack on Dr Moon in their song, Barry Town except I had to explain who the moonies were.

  • Once upon a time I was 23 or 24 years old and I got this album. It 1974-75. It was my second or third Steely Dan album. Dude, you cannot go wrong with this shit. Mood music, party music, background cocktail music, especially conversation music.

They make you think about it. Without really having to think.

    Love them.

  • @timpaterco well put

  • @timpaterco Fagen and Co. were masters of putting poetry into the mold of modern lyrics and rythym. Each and every one of these songs reads like a classic American poem to me.

  • While plowing acres of land and planting tomatoes and papayas I listened to these guys music. That was in the early seventies, and they were so encouraging in a world that seemed to have forgotten we are here to celebrate life not to destroy and cover it with cement. Love their music now just as much, it seems so appropriate. May you live for love, within the spirit of love within which your love will live forever.. ...seek the truth in all things and live within it's spirit, thanks S D

  • hey frank - If the guy gets something out of listening to the music then leave him alone. I think Steely Dan would apppreciate the sentiment from the guy .

  • Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again

  • See, Steely Dan could make pretty songs when they wanted to. Nice melody, music and no sarcastic lyrics. This is probably their most underrated song in my opinion.

  • I'm so glad to hear that Steely Dan has touched you and other people in younger generations in a profound way, egyptianminor! SD was seminal in my musical and cultural upbringing and growth of consciousness. I'm 57 and have had some wild, wild, great accomplishments in my creative career for 36 yrs in arts, media including film; SD's music has always been a great inspiration for me. Their music is more than music...it's alchemy.

  • "You can try run but you can't hide from what's inside of you"

Tell that to the world we now live in!

    The wouldn't understand

  • @panlemans, this motherfucker has nothing to do with current text, it is all about facing oneself!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @frankc32 If you need some good advise: you'd better start facing yourself a.s.a.p. then. Looks like you need it.

  • @panlemans, do not try to call me, punk, you sound like a little faggot...

I will fuck you in your punk ass, how's it?

    Cheers,

    FrankC32

  • @frankc32 I feel sorry for you. According to the way you put your words, you must live a truly miserable life. You also haven't understood the least of what Steely Dan stands for. Their lyrics tell stories about a.o. losers, or to put it clearly, about sorry folks like you.

  • Some of the other commentators have said it as well or better than I could. Steely Dan DID inhabit their own unique and unequaled place in music. I agree - thank God they decided to write and play music!! Timeless music that I will never tire of listening to again and again. ;) :)

  • this band beats it up on stage... donald is the greatest songwriter of his time

  • My friend has been down in the dumps and we smoked a joint and listened to this and everything was all good.

  • Steely Dan inhabits its own unique little universe, & I thank God they share it with us

  • @abs0luteabsence0 Forgive the bad reference, but perhaps this is the world that the Dan is welcome to.

  • "Have you ever seen a squonk's tears?" Only Steely Dan could work a reference to the mythical beast into a song.

  • Did I say 06 I ment 2011 , July 6th ,. Best outdoor venue ever". The Santa Barbra Bowl"

  • Yes Live! "74 Swing Aditorium" , "93 Blockbuster Pavilion " , "06 Santa Barbra Bowl" with my 18 year old son. Thank You ! SD you've made my life comeplete.

  • .....A Lullaby!!!

  • Whenever someone is feeling down I prescribe this song to them. I've asked my kids to understand and live by these lyrics. This is such a beautiful and timeless song.

  • Have you ever seen a squank's tears well look at mine. Nearly forty years later and this album is as fresh as it was back in 1974. You can try to run but you can't hide from what's inside of you.

  • @Tubernaut

Ever see these guys live in concert? Its amazing!!! Better than the albums for sure. If you ever get a chance, see them LIVE!!!

  • This song is so melodic ,with the sweetness thruout this classic. It makes me want to cry just going down memory lane .what can i say i"am still in love with this music .Which stands the test of time..................you will live on in music history a very long time my brothers...........

  • A friend reaching out to another - and written in such a cool way. I love this song. One of my all-time favorites.

  • This is so it,,with out this I would have caved in years ago, this world has to have some Dan in it - is it the mirror or that one does not look into it..peace

  • i so love this song

  • The sentiment expressed in this son has soothed me many times over the years...and it came into play again last night....felt better this morning....this is a classic example of the healing power of great music.

  • Wow I just got transported back to 1974 and I love it!

  • Beautiful lyrics

  • July 4th, 1974, Steely Dan perform at the Santa Monica Center. Guitarist Jeff Baxter thereupon leaves to join the Doobie Brothers and drummer Jim Hodder quits as well. Following this tour, the group does not perform again under the Steely Dan rubric until 1993. ☺

  • don't you ever presume to chastise me, you ozzy twat. how dare you try to school me about my country? what i know and what you would boast to know, would curdle your kangaroo milk. careful who you fuck with...they just may knock the wind out of you, ya dig mate? i am plenty aware of my country's leaders and their treasonous actions

  • @ultrakool Go choke, you stupid wank.

  • @absolutelyfree1963 go worship yourself, attention whore. you're welcome

  • @ultrakool What you are doing is called baiting or projection. I am not sure which. You worship yourself and your pretzels... that is your problem. Don't drop your shit in my lap, "pal". "Daddy don't live in new york city no more..." ROFL.

  • See if you can catch all the times the Dan gets "sampled" by today's so-called "artists"

  • Zero people have decided to not be a major dude....

  • 'the people on the street have all seen better times' . true enough

  • There are lots of bands that we call the best. BUT ! There is always something special about Steely Dan that sets there music apart from the best. They came up with everyday types of rythims that blended together into rock music unlike any others and added in the jazz. The vocals are everyday as well and finished it off.

    ******************************** THE GREATEST **************************************

  • Couldn't have said it better myself. I'll add that most people either LOVE them, or HATE them. And thats part of what makes them so appealing to me, the fact that they are an acquired taste. They are the most.

  • @royzone12 Well, with a dude like Larry C doing the arranging and the choice of two sets of session muzos, they had the clout to polish the songs to a very high shine. I liked the doco on making Aja. They were obsessive, like Zappa, only serious and without the smut / deviation. Love SD and Zappa.

  • i'm burning my Steely Danolanterns

  • I will totally get LOUD if any one disses the Dan

  • @CF77777 NO ONE DISSES THE DAN, OTHERWISE THEY IMPERIL THEIR ASS.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are as shrewd, sly, and smart as they come, as musicians and lyricists.

    Period. End of Fucking story.

STEELY DAN IS simply the best.

    FrankC32

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • People think the 70s sucked? You're full of it ...

  • Any major dude will still abide !

  • This is how you write a good song. Make it sound like this, and it's good.

  • I heard someone say something cutting about SD the other day...don't know if that means I'm old..or they're stupid..

  • @dustbowl424, they are stupid, trust me!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • what r the chords for this?

  • I´m brazilian, 32 yo, and music was always a priority to me.

I first heard about Steely Dan aboout one year ago, and to be honest I can´t remember listening to anything else during this past 12 months (ok, maybe a little Joss Stone).

Sticked to Can´t Buy A Thrill for 3 months, then picked up the other albums - I could take any of them to the desert island...

    Steely Dan changed my world.

Inspiration, irony, extreme competence... they´ve reached perfection on pop music.

    Long Live Dan!!!

  • @MsJagatjit cool

  • @MsJagatjit BUMP from eyptianminor, this tune is so PROFOUND!!!

I welcome all to frolic about the fields, no bullshit, any major dude will tell you"...

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @MsJagatjit wonderful to hear! :-) timeless music

  • Pop Gem- Steely Dan is the most underrated band in the world.

  • @egyptianminor Definitely...no one else like them before or since...great stuff!!

  • @egyptianminor, puh-lease, this is the FUCKING UNDERSTATEMENT of the world!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @egyptianminor They are not underrated at all.... kn own and revered by musicans and music lovers the world over... but like all true greats, its a minority compared to the bullshit mainstream, who feel your only any good if you sell 9 trillion albums, have endless no1's and have 12 nights at Hyde Park....

  • @bongoloid77 That's what I meant by underrated, mate. Underrated= underestimated;tons of people who like good 'rock' stuff fail to 'get' the Dan. That means they are underrated. Cheers.

  • @egyptianminor they arn't underrated they are in the rock and roll hall of fame

  • @Norocmorth I disagree, I meant audience wise - they were never platinum seller in the '70s (w/ the exception of Aja) R&R hall of fame is not a parameter of popularity - a ton of people never even heard of them, they're still a demi-cultish band - it's not for everyone's taste, they're far from your typical rock band - everyone knows KISSS and kiss is not in the R&r hall of fame. My comment meant: not enough people have had the opportunity to know and earned to love this fantastic band. Peace.

  • @egyptianminor yea i have to agree with that

  • So what does he mean by "when the demon is at your door"?

  • @TheSPACECOWBOY68 your problems, traumas, neuroses, nightmares, any person/thing that is a negative influence - at least that's my interpretation, '' ...you can try to run ,but you can't hide from what's inside of you"

  • @TheSPACECOWBOY68 So what do YOU think it is? Everybody has their own Daemon.

  • MY FAVE STEELY DAN TUNE. Not sure why. I love all of them. But this is IT.

  • I still have this album but haven't played it in years!! Pretzels 15 cents -- That was about 1973 or so I think.

  • @peachhead3, yup, album came out in '74. Geez, "album"? What, am I a hundred fucking years old?

Also, gotta love the way this vendor spelled "PRETZELS" on his cart! There's no way the boys in editing missed that one. Classic!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @frankc32 LOL If you look again on the bottom sign with chestnuts and peanuts "pretzels" is actually spelled correcty. So I'll agree its 1st spelling is an obvious pun at something. What? I haven't quite figured out yet. Anyone got any ideas? XD BTW don't sell yourself short. I've got the album on vinyl still & I suspect peachhead3 does as well. Together we team up to 104, so you've got a real long ball to throw to reach 100 yet. Enjoy your youth while you still can friend. ;)

  • @MrAmberRocker, I DID notice that, but I stand by my original statement.

the discord is why I chose to use the snide "boys in editing" line...

    here's to nuance!!!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • This tune reminds me of driving from Ft. worth to Houston...in December, with the top down on the car and drinking tanqs and tonics .Those college days were awesome. Thanks for posting this.

  • All-time favorite since it first release, still have this album, Steely Dan forever!

  • Great song and great album. I mean, really, how many pop/rock bands of the 1970s paid tribute to jazz great Charlie Parker?..."Parker's Band"...on the same album. This album came out when I was in college. I played it for some of my frat brothers, but unfortunately they just couldn't get into it, with their testosterone-pumped musical tastes. Their loss. And, yes, I could easily get along without Blue Oyster Cult. Hehehe! And, no, I'm not gay...just like Steely Dan!

  • @zildj1an Are you looking to be congratulated for not being gay?? Like you had a choice! Otherwise I'm with you.

  • One of their gr8's...thank walt & don.....

  • MaximusRelaximus

gdmn fkin demon is here, too...dude at my front door

    (myfriendtackledheralliswell)

  • Absolutely brilliant stuff..........but hell, it's Steely Dan so, that goes without saying, doesn't it........

  • Another Awesome Classic! Love the Guitar& Keyboards!

  • Patriots Design......"Any Major Dude" will tell you that Steely Dan is truly Inspired and in a musical, cultural class by themselves..

  • Let me ask you all...has there ever been another band where each and everyone one of their songs is a true gem the way Steely Dans songs are? These guys were and are truely remarkable! Let us then go out into the world and make it our duty to enlighten those who are truely ignorant of the boys and perhaps they will someday realize the perpetually uplifting groove that is Steely Dan. Amen.

  • Didn't know the demon left in the morning, learn something knew every day.

  • LSD and Pretzels - What could be better??

    Love this totally perfect song.

    And Fagen's perfect "Brooklyn-ese!!"

  • The cover of Pretzel Logic always reminds me of my mom taking me to downtown philadelphia as a child and seeing all of those soft pretzel vendors. Truly an everlasting icon of my youth.

  • @Timoth1983 yeah, but philly soft pretzels are elongated. this vendor is obviously a new yorker (round pretzels). probably in battery park, that's where a lot of them were...any major dude will tell you ;p

  • @ultrakool I didn't think he was a Philly vendor, it just makes me remember the ones that I used to see.

  • @ultrakool That is what makes you yanks so great. You know about the important shit, like pretzels....

Pretzel Logic (is shit....) You dig? ROFL... (go eat a bagel...)

Long Live the Dan.... (Steely dan was the Dildo from Burroughs novel Naked Lunch...)

  • @absolutelyfree1963 butt out, captain horatio obvious. who asked you? go make your flippant comments to a culture who cares. if it weren't for our most astute culture, you'd all have been speaking deutsch by now, at the least or would've been sunk to the bottom of the north atlantic. so, piss off

  • @ultrakool alright, i've just discovered you're not a prisoner of mother england, so that's different. my bad

  • @ultrakool So you too entertain quaint, ignorant fantasies that you saved the world?

Get some history, you son of a bitch....

Apart from the fact that Prescott Bush bank-rolled adolf H anyway and that you all came late after baiting the nips into doing Pearl Harbour, then jumping on the manufactured band-wagon to "save the world" single-handed (the other hand free to masturbate with, which you did.... or rather your fore-fathers).

Go choke on your bagel, you useless ignorant uncool thing.

  • @ultrakool Every textual fuckup you utter is your bad. Clean you act up you useless tool. You are the last person to talk about culture.... with any authority at least. So desist from tainting this thread with your nonsense or I shall get nasty and you will wish you never ever met me here in the threads you insignificant ignorant worm.

    I am being nice.

  • @absolutelyfree1963 nice try, puke

  • Comment removed

  • @absolutelyfree1963, I feel 100% in agreement with you, bro', but the lesson to be learned here is to simply ignore a stupid motherfucker like this!

do not waste ANY of your time or energy hating on a piece of shit like this guy. Fuck him, he will end up fucked anyway, count on it!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • Refined!

  • nice...thnx

  • Beautiful song.

  • My favorite Steely Dan Song

  • Obama Logic= Pretzel Logic

  • To my Bro DT. Perhaps a song to myself-I'm a happy fool after all.

  • ANY MODERN WORLD that falls apart will fall together again. I can telly You all I know the where to go or what to do You can try to run but You cant hide from whats inside of You. ANY major dude with half a heart will tell You so. great lyrics for sure.

  • All squonks everywhere love this song...& all other mythical creatures, my funky one...

  • the ultimate drinking tune... kick back and enjoy will ya??

  • If I ran a sports stadium or arena, this is the song I would play after the home team lost. Yankee Stadium plays Liza Minelli's "New York, New York" after a loss -- I think this song is several trillion times better.

It sets just the right mood: The demons got us tonight -- but we will be back tomorrow.

  • great Wurlitzer on this one. the korg sv1 sounds just like it.

  • this major dude will tell you that nothing compares to the mood, feel, vibe of this tune. nothing

  • People don't have a clue how many songs Steely Dan had on air as I grew up very early at 10 years old I was listening to every steely LP out to that point! OMG when AJA & Gaucho came out Roger Nichols studio polish was so ahead of it's time! I would put AJA up sonically against any cd made today! Because it was in the heyday of ANOLOG recording! ,warmth and clarity!

  • @roderickgful Yeah the vinyl audio was very well cut. I A-B compared the 12" black against the CDs when they came out ('85) and there was no audible difference. And I used decent "cans" (Stax Sr-5 electrostatics).

On Katy Lied they comment about the cutter lathe and it's strange logic (how well it cut their masters). They liked the technology... which I appreciate, having designed and built precision audio gear myself. Yes, analogue is nice. That's how you spell it.

  • I'm a Minor dude..

But I will still tell ya.

  • @cruxto I'm an out ot tune dude and I'll tell ya.

  • @cruxto LMAO

  • @cruxto and I will listen.

  • @cruxto admitting that gets you on the road to majorness

  • This is where it starts --The Dan takes you from here to the next step

  • Yes, this one is not at the top of my list, but I always, always have to listen to this one.

  • this is music...

  • yeah, I can hear them knocking too. Gotta shake them off!!

  • Damn....*shakes head in quiet satisfaction*....that's smooth.

  • One of their best ones!

  • this song is dedicated to my kids and my last son anthony. god bless you nick rest and sleep in peace. love pop

  • @fila32 God speed young man. RIP

  • eventually got to see these play few years back in dublin...xcellent gig but sadly didnt play this...great tune..

  • steely dan amazing

  • goddam fkn demon is STILL at the door.

  • @MaximusRelaximus

    I hear ya Max..........
