I'll ask John, but the I think the banner needs to get off the ground as vertically as possible, or else it will fold over on itself, and maybe snag the clips holding each letter to the next. (see a closeup in last shot of video). Also, don't want to drag banner over the ground too much. But I'll ask John asap.
@rogermccord John here, just a few notes on banner flying. This method of picking up the banner is widely used. try to get high as possible over banner when it starts coming up, hence the speed & abrupt pull up w/out getting too slow over the top. When a banner is on it will reduce the stall speed. our airport had extensive re seeding this year and we did not have many options where to set up. Never fly through the ropes. Lots of drag. My towing speed is 50 - 60 knots. Thanks for watching
Great flying, cool video.... but what's with the violent pitch up after the pickup? Just because you can, or is it necessary to straighten out the tow-line, I mean obviously you know what you are doing, but it just seems with the added drag of the banner....you know, the old adage about altitude above you, runway behind you, airspeed used....do tell.

@KMateri13 My guess would be he is pitching for best angle of attack. Full power, lots of lift. But I don't banner tow, its just a guess.

Or coming in really fast, and then pitching up for Vy.. (basically the same thing)
